Conspiring in Dreams: between Misdeeds and saving oneâs Soul
Thietmar, Bishop of Merseburg (1009-1018), was not an example of a virtuous, pious ecclesiastic; rather, he more closely exemplified an Amtsbischof and mentally anguished sinner. In the last book of his Chronicle, he narrates a dream in which he finds himself surrounded by a hostile crowd that incites him to consume a drink, which he considers suspicious and peculiar: allegedly, it causes him to feel unpleasant sensations while performing his duties. Thietmar believes this apparition (the crowd) is the result of his sinful weakness. The humility and exaggerated feelings of guilt shown by the chronicler have been properly attributed to the Christian fear of endangering the salvation of his soul. However, this concern is not an abstract one. I will analyse the textual framework within which the dream is narrated with the aim of assessing the role played by certain concrete situations related to local conflicts in fomenting ThietmarÂŽs growing preoccupation with his salvation and the repercussions of his actions on his bishopric at large. In particular, I will point to Thietmar?s concern about restoring the rights of the see and insuring that it was well-administered.Fil: Neyra, Andrea Vanina. The companies of "Meistergesang" in Germany
In a charter issued on 5 May 1513, the mayor and city council of the city of Freiburg/Breisgau reported that several citizens wanted to be allowed to establish a bruderschaft der sengerye, a confraternity of singing. âGod, the almighty, would be praised thereby, the souls would be consoled, and all men listening to the concerts would be kept from blasphemy, gaming and other secular vicesâ (âgott der allmechtig [wĂŒrde] dardurch gelopt, die selen getröst und die menschen zu zyten, so sy dem gesang zuhorten, von gotslesterung, ouch vom spyl vnd anderer weltlicher uppigkeyt gezogenâ). Considering not least the âpositive effects on the pour soulsâ (âguettaeten, so den armen selen dardurch nachgeschechen mochtâ), the request was allowed. But the petitioners had to establish their bruderschaft in exactly the form that is described in detail in the regulations (ordnung) added to the request and cited âword for wordâ (âvon wort zu wortâ) in 17 articles in the foundation charter of the confraternity

Karl Polanyiâs the great transformation: Perverse effects, protectionism and gemeinschaft
Drawing upon Karl Polanyiâs journalistic writings and unpublished lectures from the 1920s and 1930s, this article reconstructs the lineaments of his research programme that was to assume its finished form in The Great Transformation. It identifies and corrects a common misinterpretation of the thesis of that book, and argues that Polanyiâs basic theoretical framework is best conceived as Tönniesian: the âprotective counter-movementâ of The Great Transformation is Gemeinschaft, understood dynamically, while the market society is Gesellschaft. It examines the two central mechanisms by which, in Polanyiâs understanding, Gesellschaft broke down in the mid-twentieth century: the âclash between democracy and capitalism,â and a doctrine of âperverse effectsâ whereby political intervention in markets impairs profitability and saps the vitality of the market system
History as Literature
This volume presents excerpts and translations of three thirteenth-century South German verse chronicles: Rudolf von Ems\u27s Weltchronik, the anonymous Christherre-Chronik, and the Weltchronik of Jans Enikel. These three works are close in language, in date, and in conception, yet they also differ significantly, representing the perspectives of three distinct sections of medieval society: courtly, monastic, and urban. The excerpts have been chosen from the beginning of Rudolf\u27s chronicle, the middle of the Christherre-Chronik and the end of Enikel, so that taken together they give something of an impression of the chroniclers\u27 arrangement of material in a continuum from the beginning to the end of history.https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/mip_teamsmgt/1002/thumbnail.jp
