    Autonomous resource-aware scheduling of large-scale media workflows

    The media processing and distribution industry generally requires considerable resources to be able to execute the various tasks and workflows that constitute their business processes. The latter processes are often tied to critical constraints such as strict deadlines. A key issue herein is how to efficiently use the available computational, storage and network resources to be able to cope with the high work load. Optimizing resource usage is not only vital to scalability, but also to the level of QoS (e.g. responsiveness or prioritization) that can be provided. We designed an autonomous platform for scheduling and workflow-to-resource assignment, taking into account the different requirements and constraints. This paper presents the workflow scheduling algorithms, which consider the state and characteristics of the resources (computational, network and storage). The performance of these algorithms is presented in detail in the context of a European media processing and distribution use-case

    Cultural differences in complex addition: efficient Chinese versus adaptive Belgians and Canadians

    In the present study, the authors tested the effects of working-memory load on math problem solving in 3 different cultures: Flemish-speaking Belgians, English-speaking Canadians, and Chinese-speaking Chinese currently living in Canada. Participants solved complex addition problems (e.g., 58 + 76) in no-load and working-memory load conditions, in which either the central executive or the phonological loop was loaded. The authors used the choice/no-choice method to obtain unbiased measures of strategy selection and strategy efficiency. The Chinese participants were faster than the Belgians, who were faster and more accurate than the Canadians. The Chinese also required fewer working-memory resources than did the Belgians and Canadians. However, the Chinese chose less adaptively from the available strategies than did the Belgians and Canadians. These cultural differences in math problem solving are likely the result of different instructional approaches during elementary school (practice and training in Asian countries vs. exploration and flexibility in non-Asian countries), differences in the number language, and informal cultural norms and standards. The relevance of being adaptive is discussed as well as the implications of the results in regards to the strategy choice and discovery simulation model of strategy selection (J. Shrager & R. S. Siegler, 1998)

    The crux of cognitive load: Constraining deliberate and effortful decision processes in romantic jealousy

They attribute this support emanating from studies forcing men and women to choose between sexual and emotional infidelity as generating more negative emotional responses to a methodological artifact. This attribution is based on the results of their study allegedly demonstrating that sex differences in jealousy emerge in the forced-choice response format only when participants employ deliberate and effortful decision processes but disappear when using automatic or simple decision processes. The present study offers and tests an alternative account of their results. Specifically, the participants were forced to employ a simple decision process by either a substantial time pressure or a jealousy-related word load or jealousy-unrelated digit-string load imposed on the participants while choosing between sexual and emotional infidelity as causing more jealousy. The sex differences predicted by the evolutionary hypothesis were found in the time pressure and word-load condition, and they were attenuated in the digit-string condition. Additionally, only in the digit-load condition was sexual infidelity selected more frequently when it appeared as the first response option, indicating that the empirical basis of DeSteno et al.'s challenge of the evolutionary view of jealousy is in all likelihood attributable to a methodological artifact.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaf

    A Simulated Annealing Method to Cover Dynamic Load Balancing in Grid Environment

    High-performance scheduling is critical to the achievement of application performance on the computational grid. New scheduling algorithms are in demand for addressing new concerns arising in the grid environment. One of the main phases of scheduling on a grid is related to the load balancing problem therefore having a high-performance method to deal with the load balancing problem is essential to obtain a satisfactory high-performance scheduling. This paper presents SAGE, a new high-performance method to cover the dynamic load balancing problem by means of a simulated annealing algorithm. Even though this problem has been addressed with several different approaches only one of these methods is related with simulated annealing algorithm. Preliminary results show that SAGE not only makes it possible to find a good solution to the problem (effectiveness) but also in a reasonable amount of time (efficiency)

    Sensitivity study of crack driving force predictions in heterogeneous welds using Vickers hardness maps

    Weld flaws often require an engineering critical assessment (ECA) to judge on the necessity for weld repair. ECA is a fracture mechanics based prediction of the integrity of welds under operating conditions. Adding to the complexity of an ECA is the occurrence of local constitutive property variations in the weldment (‘weld heterogeneity’). Their quantification is important to allow for an accurate assessment. Hereto, hardness measurements are widely adopted given their theoretical relation with ultimate tensile strength. However, various standards and procedures report a wide variety of different hardness transfer functions and additionally recognize substantial scatter in predictions of strength. Within this context, this paper investigates the suitability of hardness mapping to perform an accurate weld ECA. A finite element analysis has been conducted on welds originating from steel pipelines to simulate their crack driving force response using single-edge notched tension (SE(T)) specimens. Vickers hardness maps and hardness transfer functions are combined to assign element-specific constitutive properties to the model. The resulting crack driving force curves are probed against experimental results. The variable agreement between simulations and experiments highlights the need for further research into the characterization of local constitutive properties of heterogeneous welds. A hardness transfer procedure based on all weld metal tensile testing appears to be particularly promising
