Since the publication of the landmark report by Doll and Hill on the causal relationship between smoking and lung cancer and the release of the first Surgeon General Report on the impact of smoking, tobacco use has been accepted as a devastating threat to public health. Tobacco smoking cannot be separated from the commercial interests of the tobacco industry which has been innovatively and strategically marketing its products, infiltrating policy making systems, and attempting to build a positive image to help shape public perception. In Indonesia, the second-highest cigarette market in the world, tobacco industry marketing is omnipresent. The country, where two-thirds of adult males are smokers, with the smoking population having almost reached 100 million, has not made a strong commitment to tobacco control. Indonesia is the only country in the Asia-Pacific yet to ratify the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). In 2012, the national government adopted tobacco control regulations, but they contain significant loopholes that are open to tobacco industry manipulation. This thesis assesses perspectives of policy actors on the national tobacco control regulation, documents tobacco company marketing strategies within the current regulatory environment and explores tobacco control stakeholder views on barriers to advancing tobacco control in Indonesia and the future of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) and retailing regulation in Indonesia. Several strategies and infrastructure initiatives that could strengthen the tobacco marketing ban and support tobacco control in Indonesia are discussed. I also suggest the need for an immediate response to the increasing popularity of alternative tobacco products

Philanthropy in China is fast growing. A new important charity law of China came into effect in 2016. This book is a comprehensive report about these developments: Philanthropy is considered the third form of wealth distribution (private means to public ends and communities) after market competition and taxation scheme. In individualistic and market-oriented societies, philanthropy is more established and relevant than in societies, where the state controls distribution. This book compares Chinese and Western concepts of philanthropy and analyzes the history, drivers, institutional environment, latest legal frame, donation patterns, the role of civil society, corporate giving and the media in Chinese philanthropy. The report serves as comprehensive overview for all actors in society in China and internationally who are dealing with philanthropy in China. (Globethics.net Publications

The role of social media in the anticipatory governance of GM technology: A comparative analysis of Chinese and English-language social media

    Get PDF
Anticipatory governance—an up-to-date strategy of science governance—provides a forward-seeing option for policy-makers to govern emerging technologies in contemporary society. The present research serves as an explorative study attempting to introduce the great value of social media (Twitter and Weibo) to the implementation of foresight and engagement capacity, arguing that social media are able to play as a supportive forum for anticipatory governance. A comparative analytic study scheme is also applied considering the different backgrounds of social media. The user-generated content arising from the GM future related spontaneous discussion is collected respectively from Twitter and Weibo and later on analyzed with qualitative content analysis under the assistance of QSR NVivo software. The results of this research show that Twitter and Weibo are playing the role of a supportive forum for anticipatory governance, where GM future, which turns out to be a globally controversial issue in this research, is intensively conceived and debated via the wide participation of individuals in spontaneous discussion; GM future-related spontaneous discussion can be identified as an incomplete transition from the deficit one-way communication model to a two-way dialogue model; the appearance of quiet engagement suggests more possible formats for online engagement, which led me to a reconsideration of the definition of public engagement in an Internet environment; the term mid-politics is proposed to justify the unique style of sub-politics rooted in China, which is led by public intellectuals and pushed forward in the form of public debate by controversy or movement leaders

The Mediated Myth of Lin Zexu

The present study aims at determining the role played by the media representations of the myth of Lin Zexu in China. It precisely attempts to illustrate how, as a media form of popular culture, the myth of Lin Zexu epitomizes precise practices of representations embedded in a wider cultural network whithin which, determined actors, agencies, signs, and practices – somewhat struggling and interacting over the production, communication and consumption of specific meanings and ideologies – give shape to a peculiar articulation of the social and cultural texture of Chinese society. The subject of this study are thus a series of representations of Lin Zexu conveyed by distinct Chinese media since 1978. I endeavour at analysing how Lin Zexu is a meaning-making resource produced and communicated by specific Chinese media such as Television products and various Internet content, and consumed by Chinese media users through a multiplicity of media forms – movies, documentaries, digital images, cartoon, songs, Internet database research engines, microblogs, and digital photographs – in order to allow the constructed myth of Lin Zexu of upholding Chinese society’s institutions, to legitimize its rulers, to celebrate their values, and more generally to preserve China’s trajetory and the specific way of life that follows it. By semiotically examining Lin Zexu representations’ content and meaning, their political economy of production, and partially the users’ reception and response to such media representations, I try to weave the cultural network that they generate and are simultaneously part of. This work also wishes to address the specific modalities through which the media forms of the myth of Lin Zexu exemplify a diversified cultural phenomena that I understand as the mediatisation of historical knowledge, that is the process through which the historical is culturally produced by the Chinese media – TV products, movies, Internet various content – in the form of a myth (Lin Zexu’s), supposedly conveying historical truth, and thence becoming facilitators of specific cultural experiences that people are taught and/or encouraged to recognize as Chinese history, namely their past

The thesis will analyse the evolution of the Chinese film industry between 2010 and 2016. During this period, the Chinese film industry experienced rapid development and underwent massive structural change and expansion. The years 2010 to 2016, also gave rise to a number of important events and phenomena within the Chinese film industry, including technological changes that impacted upon traditional entertainment practices, new Internet-driven innovations, an enormous influx of capital, generous government incentives and an overall explosion in media saturation and popularity. My research poses the following questions; what are the key features of the Chinese film industry between 2010 and 2016? What developments transpired within the Chinese film industry between the years 2010 and 2016 and how might we understand and rationalise these contemporary trends. This thesis adopts a political economy approach. It is the assertion of my research that developments within the Chinese film industry must be considered within the wider socio-economic and political context of contemporary China. This thesis provides a macro-level study of the contemporary Chinese film industry, with focus given to four key areas of research, namely policy, production, distribution and exhibition. These four study areas provide a fitting entry point to better understand the shifting dynamics of the Chinese film industry between 2010 and 2016. The intention of this thesis is to map out contemporary trends within the Chinese film industry. My research, aimed at both academics and industry insiders alike, adopts an industry perspective with the aim of both enriching further scholarship on Chinese cinema, while simultaneously serving as a source of knowledge and understanding for those working within the industry. It is hoped that this thesis will enhance further the academic studies on Chinese cinema by providing an industrial bedrock upon which additional analysis can be based, while also providing the industry with insight that will facilitate the continued health and sustainability of cinema in China."This work was supported by the Institute for Global Cinema and Creative Cultures - IGCCC [waiver scholarship, 2015]." -- Fundin

Effect of Social Media Characteristics on Perceptions of Alcohol-Branded Social Media Content

    Get PDF
Background: Alcohol advertising has recently expanded onto social networking sites (SNSs), which allows users to interact with alcohol ads through user engagement features (e.g. Likes or Shares) and user-generated comments. Few studies have evaluated alcohol advertising on SNSs or investigated how ad interactivity may influence ad perceptions. Two inter-related studies were conducted to answer these questions. Methods: In Study 1, alcohol advertising posted on Facebook by Budweiser and Bud Light were evaluated for compliance with a self-regulated alcohol advertising code and for thematic content. User-generated comments written in response to these ads were also evaluated. The results of this study were used to inform Study 2, a 2(within) x 2(between) x 2(between) factorial randomized trial. Participants (n=120) viewed four pre-selected Facebook ads, of which two were compliant and two were non-compliant with a self-regulated alcohol advertising code. Participants also viewed real-world high or low user engagement values and real-world pro- or anti-drinking user-generated comments. Ad appeal, drinking intentions, and individual user engagement were measured after viewing each ad. The results were analyzed using hierarchical linear models. Results: In Study 1, 82% of the ads contained 1 or more violations of a self-regulated alcohol advertising code, and 78% of the ads contained one or more content areas previously associated with code violations. Forty-seven percent of the user-generated comments were positive towards the product or drinking. In Study 2, ads non-compliant with a self-regulated alcohol advertising code scored higher on emotional appeal (p=0.004) while compliant ads scored higher on informational (p\u3c0.001) and source appeal (p=0.034). Pro-drinking user-generated comments significantly increased drinking intentions and individual user engagement. Discussion: Self-regulation has failed to prevent potentially harmful content from appearing in Budweiser and Bud Light advertising posted on Facebook. Non-compliance with existing self-regulated alcohol advertising codes was associated with increased emotional appeal, which may result in the ads being remembered more often and recalled more swiftly. Pro-drinking user-generated comments were associated with increased drinking intentions and increased individual user engagement, both of which are associated with increased alcohol consumption. New regulations may be needed to limit alcohol ad content and the influence of user-generated comments

Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective

    Get PDF
Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective examines how conspiracy theories and related forms of misinformation and disinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic have circulated widely around the world. Covid conspiracy theories have attracted considerable attention from researchers, journalists, and politicians, not least because conspiracy beliefs have the potential to negatively affect adherence to public health measures. While most of this focus has been on the United States and Western Europe, this collection provides a unique global perspective on the emergence and development of conspiracy theories through a series of case studies. The chapters have been commissioned by recognized experts on area studies and conspiracy theories. The chapters present case studies on how Covid conspiracism has played out (some focused on a single country, others on regions), using a range of methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including history, politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. Collectively, the authors reveal that, although there are many narratives that have spread virally, they have been adapted for different uses and take on different meanings in local contexts. This volume makes an important contribution to the rapidly expanding field of academic conspiracy theory studies, as well as being of interest to those working in the media, regulatory agencies, and civil society organizations, who seek to better understand the problem of how and why conspiracy theories spread
