A smart space is an environment, mainly equipped with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, able to provide services to humans, helping them to perform daily tasks by monitoring the space and autonomously executing actions, giving suggestions and sending alarms. Approaches suggested in the literature may differ in terms of required facilities, possible applications, amount of human intervention required, ability to support multiple users at the same time adapting to changing needs. In this paper, we propose a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that classifies most influential approaches in the area of smart spaces according to a set of dimensions identified by answering a set of research questions. These dimensions allow to choose a specific method or approach according to available sensors, amount of labeled data, need for visual analysis, requirements in terms of enactment and decision-making on the environment. Additionally, the paper identifies a set of challenges to be addressed by future research in the field

    Discovery of Spatiotemporal Event Sequences

Finding frequent patterns plays a vital role in many analytics tasks such as finding itemsets, associations, correlations, and sequences. In recent decades, spatiotemporal frequent pattern mining has emerged with the main goal focused on developing data-driven analysis frameworks for understanding underlying spatial and temporal characteristics in massive datasets. In this thesis, we will focus on discovering spatiotemporal event sequences from large-scale region trajectory datasetes with event annotations. Spatiotemporal event sequences are the series of event types whose trajectory-based instances follow each other in spatiotemporal context. We introduce new data models for storing and processing evolving region trajectories, provide a novel framework for modeling spatiotemporal follow relationships, and present novel spatiotemporal event sequence mining algorithms

Motor patterns evaluation of people with neuromuscular disorders for biomechanical risk management and job integration/reintegration

Neurological diseases are now the most common pathological condition and the leading cause of disability, progressively worsening the quality of life of those affected. Because of their high prevalence, they are also a social issue, burdening both the national health service and the working environment. It is therefore crucial to be able to characterize altered motor patterns in order to develop appropriate rehabilitation treatments with the primary goal of restoring patients' daily lives and optimizing their working abilities. In this thesis, I present a collection of published scientific articles I co-authored as well as two in progress in which we looked for appropriate indices for characterizing motor patterns of people with neuromuscular disorders that could be used to plan rehabilitation and job accommodation programs. We used instrumentation for motion analysis and wearable inertial sensors to compute kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic indices. These indices proved to be a useful tool for not only developing and validating a clinical and ergonomic rehabilitation pathway, but also for designing more ergonomic prosthetic and orthotic devices and controlling collaborative robots

Actionable Knowledge Discovery (AKD) is a crucial aspect of data mining that is gaining popularity and being applied in a wide range of domains. This is because AKD can extract valuable insights and information, also known as knowledge, from large datasets. The goal of this paper is to examine different research studies that focus on various domains and have different objectives. The paper will review and discuss the methods used in these studies in detail. AKD is a process of identifying and extracting actionable insights from data, which can be used to make informed decisions and improve business outcomes. It is a powerful tool for uncovering patterns and trends in data that can be used for various applications such as customer relationship management, marketing, and fraud detection. The research studies reviewed in this paper will explore different techniques and approaches for AKD in different domains, such as healthcare, finance, and telecommunications. The paper will provide a thorough analysis of the current state of AKD in the field and will review the main methods used by various research studies. Additionally, the paper will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each method and will discuss any novel or new solutions presented in the field. Overall, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the methods and techniques used in AKD and the impact they have on different domains
