    Study of resonances in 1 x 25 kV AC traction systems with external balancing equipment

To reduce unbalance, external balancing equipment is usually connected to these systems, forming the Steinmetz circuit. Parallel resonances can occur in these types of circuits, exciting the harmonic emissions (below 2 kHz) of railway-adjustable speed drives. This paper studies these resonances at pantograph terminals and provides analytical expressions to determine their harmonic frequencies.     open2An electric arc is an example of a transient event that is quite common in electrified transportation systems as by-product of the current collection mechanism. As a broadband transient, an electric arc excites a wide range of (often oscillatory) responses related to the substation and onboard filters, as well as the line resonances and anti-resonances. Similarly do the charging of onboard filter and other related inrush events.     Electric arcs are an unavoidable by-product of current collection by sliding contact in electrified transportation systems. Electric arcs are transient phenomena with implications for PQ measurements and wearing estimation and prevention of the sliding contact and catenary. Besides being heavily influenced by mechanical characteristics and material properties, their electrical characterization encompasses spectral properties and the influence of train and traction line circuits and relative position of infrastructure elements.     Running rails in electrified transportation systems are the interface element for several phenomena related to system performance, electromagnetic compatibility and safety: useful voltage at rolling stock, short circuit current, induced voltage, stray current, and track circuit operation. This work presents the physical and mathematical groundings of rail electrical parameters (dc and ac resistance, ac internal and external inductance) and experimental results available in the literature, discussing variability and reliability for each interface. The results consist thus of the identification of the relevant rails longitudinal electrical parameters, the presentation of a set of reliable experimental values, and the discussion of the best approach to manage their variability and uncertainty

    The sensitivity of the input impedance parameters of track circuits to changes in the parameters of the track

    This paper deals with the sensitivity of the input impedance of an open track circuit in the event that the parameters of the track are changed. Weather conditions and the state of pollution are the most common reasons for parameter changes. The results were obtained from the measured values of the parameters R (resistance), G (conductance), L (inductance), and C (capacitance) of a rail superstructure depending on the frequency. Measurements were performed on a railway siding in Orlova. The results are used to design a predictor of occupancy of a track section. In particular, we were interested in the frequencies of 75 and 275 Hz for this purpose. Many parameter values of track substructures have already been solved in different works in literature. At first, we had planned to use the parameter values from these sources when we designed the predictor. Deviations between them, however, are large and often differ by three orders of magnitude (see Tab.8). From this perspective, this article presents data that have been updated using modern measurement devices and computer technology. And above all, it shows a transmission (cascade) matrix used to determine the parameters

    The scope of Session 2 (S2) has been defined as follows by the Session Advisory Group and the Technical Committee: Power Quality (PQ), with the more general concept of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and with some related safety problems in electricity distribution systems. Special focus is put on voltage continuity (supply reliability, problem of outages) and voltage quality (voltage level, flicker, unbalance, harmonics). This session will also look at electromagnetic compatibility (mains frequency to 150 kHz), electromagnetic interferences and electric and magnetic fields issues. Also addressed in this session are electrical safety and immunity concerns (lightning issues, step, touch and transferred voltages). The aim of this special report is to present a synthesis of the present concerns in PQ&EMC, based on all selected papers of session 2 and related papers from other sessions, (152 papers in total).     AC traction systems are 1 x 25 or 2 x 25 kV 50-Hz single-phase, non-linear, time-varying loads that can cause power quality problems. One of the main concerns about these systems is voltage distortion, because adjustable-speed drives for trains may inject harmonic currents of frequencies below 2kHz. Since the presence of parallel resonances in the contact feeder section of the traction circuit worsens the scenario, traction system resonance phenomena should be analyzed to prevent problems. Several works addressed these phenomena, but they only drew weak numerical conclusions based on the frequency scan method. This article studies 1 x 25 kV traction system resonances at pantograph terminals and provides more effective analytical expressions to locate them and determine the impact of traction system parameters on them.
