Undirected Graphs of Entanglement Two
Entanglement is a complexity measure of directed graphs that origins in fixed
point theory. This measure has shown its use in designing efficient algorithms
to verify logical properties of transition systems. We are interested in the
problem of deciding whether a graph has entanglement at most k. As this measure
is defined by means of games, game theoretic ideas naturally lead to design
polynomial algorithms that, for fixed k, decide the problem. Known
characterizations of directed graphs of entanglement at most 1 lead, for k = 1,
to design even faster algorithms. In this paper we present an explicit
characterization of undirected graphs of entanglement at most 2. With such a
characterization at hand, we devise a linear time algorithm to decide whether
an undirected graph has this property
Permanents, Pfaffian orientations, and even directed circuits
Given a 0-1 square matrix A, when can some of the 1's be changed to -1's in
such a way that the permanent of A equals the determinant of the modified
matrix? When does a real square matrix have the property that every real matrix
with the same sign pattern (that is, the corresponding entries either have the
same sign or are both zero) is nonsingular? When is a hypergraph with n
vertices and n hyperedges minimally nonbipartite? When does a bipartite graph
have a "Pfaffian orientation"? Given a digraph, does it have no directed
circuit of even length? Given a digraph, does it have a subdivision with no
even directed circuit?
It is known that all of the above problems are equivalent. We prove a
structural characterization of the feasible instances, which implies a
polynomial-time algorithm to solve all of the above problems. The structural
characterization says, roughly speaking, that a bipartite graph has a Pfaffian
orientation if and only if it can be obtained by piecing together (in a
specified way) planar bipartite graphs and one sporadic nonplanar bipartite

On the Implicit Graph Conjecture
The implicit graph conjecture states that every sufficiently small,
hereditary graph class has a labeling scheme with a polynomial-time computable
label decoder. We approach this conjecture by investigating classes of label
decoders defined in terms of complexity classes such as P and EXP. For
instance, GP denotes the class of graph classes that have a labeling scheme
with a polynomial-time computable label decoder. Until now it was not even
known whether GP is a strict subset of GR. We show that this is indeed the case
and reveal a strict hierarchy akin to classical complexity. We also show that
classes such as GP can be characterized in terms of graph parameters. This
could mean that certain algorithmic problems are feasible on every graph class
in GP. Lastly, we define a more restrictive class of label decoders using
first-order logic that already contains many natural graph classes such as
forests and interval graphs. We give an alternative characterization of this
class in terms of directed acyclic graphs. By showing that some small,
hereditary graph class cannot be expressed with such label decoders a weaker
form of the implicit graph conjecture could be disproven.Comment: 13 pages, MFCS 201
Normal Domains Arising from Graph Theory
Determining whether an arbitrary subring R of k[x1±1,...,xn±1] is a normal domain is, in general, a nontrivial problem, even in the special case of a monomial generated domain. First, we determine normality in the case where R is a monomial generated domain where the generators have the form (xixj)±1. Using results for this special case we generalize to the case when R is a monomial generated domain where the generators have the form xi±1xj±1. In both cases, for the ring R, we consider the combinatorial structure that assigns an edge in a mixed directed signed graph to each monomial of the ring. We then use this relationship to provide a combinatorial characterization of the normality of R, and, when R is not normal, we use the combinatorial characterization to compute the normalization of R. Using this construction, we also determine when the ring R satisfies Serre\u27s R1 condition. We also discuss generalizations of this to directed graphs with a homogenizing variable and a special class of hypergraphs
Vector Reachability Problem in
The decision problems on matrices were intensively studied for many decades
as matrix products play an essential role in the representation of various
computational processes. However, many computational problems for matrix
semigroups are inherently difficult to solve even for problems in low
dimensions and most matrix semigroup problems become undecidable in general
starting from dimension three or four.
This paper solves two open problems about the decidability of the vector
reachability problem over a finitely generated semigroup of matrices from
and the point to point reachability (over rational
numbers) for fractional linear transformations, where associated matrices are
from . The approach to solving reachability problems
is based on the characterization of reachability paths between points which is
followed by the translation of numerical problems on matrices into
computational and combinatorial problems on words and formal languages. We also
give a geometric interpretation of reachability paths and extend the
decidability results to matrix products represented by arbitrary labelled
directed graphs. Finally, we will use this technique to prove that a special
case of the scalar reachability problem is decidable
