    (Tissue) P Systems with Vesicles of Multisets

    We consider tissue P systems working on vesicles of multisets with the very simple operations of insertion, deletion, and substitution of single objects. With the whole multiset being enclosed in a vesicle, sending it to a target cell can be indicated in those simple rules working on the multiset. As derivation modes we consider the sequential mode, where exactly one rule is applied in a derivation step, and the set maximal mode, where in each derivation step a non-extendable set of rules is applied. With the set maximal mode, computational completeness can already be obtained with tissue P systems having a tree structure, whereas tissue P systems even with an arbitrary communication structure are not computationally complete when working in the sequential mode. Adding polarizations (-1, 0, 1 are sufficient) allows for obtaining computational completeness even for tissue P systems working in the sequential mode.Comment: In Proceedings AFL 2017, arXiv:1708.0622

    Splicing systems and the Chomsky hierarchy

    In this paper, we prove decidability properties and new results on the position of the family of languages generated by (circular) splicing systems within the Chomsky hierarchy. The two main results of the paper are the following. First, we show that it is decidable, given a circular splicing language and a regular language, whether they are equal. Second, we prove the language generated by an alphabetic splicing system is context-free. Alphabetic splicing systems are a generalization of simple and semi-simple splicin systems already considered in the literature

    The formal power of one-visit attribute grammars

    An attribute grammar is one-visit if the attributes can be evaluated by walking through the derivation tree in such a way that each subtree is visited at most once. One-visit (1V) attribute grammars are compared with one-pass left-to-right (L) attribute grammars and with attribute grammars having only one synthesized attribute (1S).\ud \ud Every 1S attribute grammar can be made one-visit. One-visit attribute grammars are simply permutations of L attribute grammars; thus the classes of output sets of 1V and L attribute grammars coincide, and similarly for 1S and L-1S attribute grammars. In case all attribute values are trees, the translation realized by a 1V attribute grammar is the composition of the translation realized by a 1S attribute grammar with a deterministic top-down tree transduction, and vice versa; thus, using a result of Duske e.a., the class of output languages of 1V (or L) attribute grammars is the image of the class of IO macro tree languages under all deterministic top-down tree transductions

    Extensional and Intensional Strategies

    This paper is a contribution to the theoretical foundations of strategies. We first present a general definition of abstract strategies which is extensional in the sense that a strategy is defined explicitly as a set of derivations of an abstract reduction system. We then move to a more intensional definition supporting the abstract view but more operational in the sense that it describes a means for determining such a set. We characterize the class of extensional strategies that can be defined intensionally. We also give some hints towards a logical characterization of intensional strategies and propose a few challenging perspectives
