    Characterization of Audiovisual Dramatic Attitudes

    Get PDF
International audienceIn this work we explore the capability of audiovisual parameters (such as voice frequency, rhythm, head motion or facial expressions) to discriminate among different dramatic attitudes. We extract the audiovisual parameters from an acted corpus of attitudes and structure them as frame, syllable, and sentence-level features. Using Linear Discriminant Analysis classifiers, we show that sentence-level features present a higher discriminating rate among the attitudes and are less dependent on the speaker than frame and sylable features. We also compare the classification results with the perceptual evaluation tests, showing that voice frequency is correlated to the perceptual results for all attitudes, while other features, such as head motion, contribute differently, depending both on the attitude and the speaker

Correlational network visual analysis of adolescents' film entertainment responses

    Get PDF
This study aims to shed light on adolescents' characterizations of their preferred film entertainment. It seeks to describe the psychological responses of youngsters from two European countries (Italy and Spain) to dramas from the European region about current social/human issues. The study also seeks to determine if the adolescents' responses differ according to the film and the cultural context (country) to which they belong. For doing so, the research applies an innovative visual research technique in Media Communication: a correlational network analysis. A total of 234 Italian and Spanish adolescents watched three European dramas. Later, they completed four questionnaires measuring hedonic (enjoyment), eudaimonic (appreciation) responses and predictors of them (narrative engagement and perceived realism). The results present the visual intercorrelations of the studied variables, which give deeper insights into youngsters' gratifications in film consumption. These results suggest that films appear to be more influential than country in adolescents' responses. They also show there are specific models of responses for each film in each situation. The application of the visual quantitative tool broadens our knowledge on adolescents' entertainment through dramatic film and on the role of the cultural context and the audiovisual stimulus in the entertainment responses. It also challenges empirical studies using a single stimulus

In audiovisual's history, minorities as LGBTQ+ people had been excluded or stereotyped, thus, this study has as a guiding question understanding “Him”, character of the classic cartoon series “The Powerpuff Girls”, produced between 1998 and 2005 by Cartoon Network - by the bias of the Queer Theory, which address the questions about non-heteronormative bodies that belong to marginalized groups whose rights are denied and their lives taken. For this, a documentary and exploratory methodology was used, based on the authors researches like: Guacira Louro, Judith Butler, Edgar Morin, besides the analysis of two episodes: Octil Evil and Bash Birthday. Thus, the problematizations arised here refer to: a) How the Queer is related to Him and its possible problems and b) The dialectic between the bodies discourses accepted and excluded from the heteronormative society.  The argumentation of this research is sustained by homophobia and transphobia brazilian datas, which reveals the urge to approach matters about gender and sexuality representations

Electronic Dance Music in Narrative Film

    Get PDF
As a growing number of filmmakers are moving away from the traditional model of orchestral underscoring in favor of a more contemporary approach to film sound, electronic dance music (EDM) is playing an increasingly important role in current soundtrack practice. With a focus on two specific examples, Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run (1998) and Darren Aronofsky’s Pi (1998), this essay discusses the possibilities that such a distinctive aesthetics brings to filmmaking, especially with regard to audiovisual rhythm and sonic integration

Non-Formal Arts Education: a dynamic reality of dance, music and dramatic art

    Get PDF
In this study we provide an overview of non-formal arts education. The main aim of the study was to show the presence of non-formal education institutions offering education in art forms such as dance, music, dramatic art, and visual and audiovisual arts, in addition to the other institutions, such as museums or creative groups that offer some type of arts education. Two aspects were considered: the presence of institutions and their profile. We found 4,790 institutions that are currently offering some kind of arts education. The data obtained were used to draw up the maps of the study. The first aim was to show the presence of non-formal arts education in two ways: first, according to frequency, and second, by weighting the levels according to the presence of institutions by counties. The results show a dynamic reality that is present and clearly reflects people's interest in cultivating some form of artistic expression in their lives

Analysis of the image of immigration in prime time television fiction

    Get PDF
This article presents the results of a research study into the image of immigration as presented in television fiction, taking Cultivation Theory as a reference. Content analysis was performed on a representative sample of prime-time fictional programming broadcast in 2010 on six television channels. Results show that immigrant characters are under-represented and their construction is based on negative stereotypes. These results are discussed in relation to the role of television fiction in reducing prejudice

From the 19-Century Novel to the Portuguese Contemporary Film Adaptation

    Get PDF
The literary adaptations of canonical novels for film provide a unique repository of both identity contents and socio-cultural observations which can be revisited through the filmic representations. These recreations symbolize not only a privileged visual interpretation of a nation, but they also allow us to examine how a given society reflects itself through the fiction. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to reflect upon the Portuguese updated filmic adaptation of The Crime of Father Amaro (1880) by the canonical author Eça de Queiroz. On one hand, the author intends to rethink about the Portuguese identity portrayed by the film and, at the same time, the author manages to observe how the Portuguese society is revealed. On the other hand, the paper aims to analyze the particular process of the adaptation of The Crime of Father Amaro following a qualitative methodology

A Postdramatic Composer in Search of a Dramatic Aesthetic, or, the Apotheosis and Decline of Andrew Lloyd Webber

    Get PDF
Andrew Lloyd Webber has been associated with a type of musical theater that disregards the conventions of the character-driven musical play, offering, instead, a stream of impressive and loosely connected aural and visual images. His compositional method could be easily described as "postdramatic," prioritizing the audiovisual intensity of the individual dramatic moment, rather than its insertion into a coherent narrative structure. However, a closer reading of Lloyd Webber's musico-dramatic texts can reveal the composer's consistent effort to develop a more traditionally dramatic musical aesthetic. This experimentation with more dramatic models of musical composition produced Lloyd Webber's biggest commercial triumph, The Phantom of the Opera, but can also be considered responsible for his subsequent demise. The present paper will try to trace these developments in Lloyd Webber's compositional method, offering, at the same time, a sociological reading of his aesthetic that explains the reasons for the composer's vast popularity in postmodern culture as well as the reasons for his decline
