Adaptive Nonlinear RF Cancellation for Improved Isolation in Simultaneous Transmit-Receive Systems
This paper proposes an active radio frequency (RF) cancellation solution to
suppress the transmitter (TX) passband leakage signal in radio transceivers
supporting simultaneous transmission and reception. The proposed technique is
based on creating an opposite-phase baseband equivalent replica of the TX
leakage signal in the transceiver digital front-end through adaptive nonlinear
filtering of the known transmit data, to facilitate highly accurate
cancellation under a nonlinear TX power amplifier (PA). The active RF
cancellation is then accomplished by employing an auxiliary transmitter chain,
to generate the actual RF cancellation signal, and combining it with the
received signal at the receiver (RX) low noise amplifier (LNA) input. A
closed-loop parameter learning approach, based on the decorrelation principle,
is also developed to efficiently estimate the coefficients of the nonlinear
cancellation filter in the presence of a nonlinear TX PA with memory, finite
passive isolation, and a nonlinear RX LNA. The performance of the proposed
cancellation technique is evaluated through comprehensive RF measurements
adopting commercial LTE-Advanced transceiver hardware components. The results
show that the proposed technique can provide an additional suppression of up to
54 dB for the TX passband leakage signal at the RX LNA input, even at
considerably high transmit power levels and with wide transmission bandwidths.
Such novel cancellation solution can therefore substantially improve the TX-RX
isolation, hence reducing the requirements on passive isolation and RF
component linearity, as well as increasing the efficiency and flexibility of
the RF spectrum use in the emerging 5G radio networks.Comment: accepted to IEE
An Improved Variable Structure Adaptive Filter Design and Analysis for Acoustic Echo Cancellation
In this research an advance variable structure adaptive Multiple Sub-Filters (MSF) based algorithm for single channel Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) is proposed and analyzed. This work suggests a new and improved direction to find the optimum tap-length of adaptive filter employed for AEC. The structure adaptation, supported by a tap-length based weight update approach helps the designed echo canceller to maintain a trade-off between the Mean Square Error (MSE) and time taken to attain the steady state MSE. The work done in this paper focuses on replacing the fixed length sub-filters in existing MSF based AEC algorithms which brings refinements in terms of convergence, steady state error and tracking over the single long filter, different error and common error algorithms. A dynamic structure selective coefficient update approach to reduce the structural and computational cost of adaptive design is discussed in context with the proposed algorithm. Simulated results reveal a comparative performance analysis over proposed variable structure multiple sub-filters designs and existing fixed tap-length sub-filters based acoustic echo cancellers
An Efficient Spectral Leakage Filtering for IEEE 802.11af in TV White Space
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely adopted for
modern wireless standards and become a key enabling technology for cognitive
radios. However, one of its main drawbacks is significant spectral leakage due
to the accumulation of multiple sinc-shaped subcarriers. In this paper, we
present a novel pulse shaping scheme for efficient spectral leakage suppression
in OFDM based physical layer of IEEE 802.11af standard. With conventional pulse
shaping filters such as a raised-cosine filter, vestigial symmetry can be used
to reduce spectral leakage very effectively. However, these pulse shaping
filters require long guard interval, i.e., cyclic prefix in an OFDM system, to
avoid inter-symbol interference (ISI), resulting in a loss of spectral
efficiency. The proposed pulse shaping method based on asymmetric pulse shaping
achieves better spectral leakage suppression and decreases ISI caused by
filtering as compared to conventional pulse shaping filters
Equalization of Third-Order Intermodulation Products in Wideband Direct Conversion Receivers
This paper reports a SAW-less direct-conversion receiver which utilizes a mixed-signal feedforward path to regenerate and adaptively cancel IM3 products, thus accomplishing system-level linearization. The receiver system performance is dominated by a custom integrated RF front end implemented in 130-nm CMOS and achieves an uncorrected out-of-band IIP3 of -7.1 dBm under the worst-case UMTS FDD Region 1 blocking specifications. Under IM3 equalization, the receiver achieves an effective IIP3 of +5.3 dBm and meets the UMTS BER sensitivity requirement with 3.7 dB of margin
P and M class phasor measurement unit algorithms using adaptive cascaded filters
The new standard C37.118.1 lays down strict performance limits for phasor measurement units (PMUs) under steady-state and dynamic conditions. Reference algorithms are also presented for the P (performance) and M (measurement) class PMUs. In this paper, the performance of these algorithms is analysed during some key signal scenarios, particularly those of off-nominal frequency, frequency ramps, and harmonic contamination. While it is found that total vector error (TVE) accuracy is relatively easy to achieve, the reference algorithm is not able to achieve a useful ROCOF (rate of change of frequency) accuracy. Instead, this paper presents alternative algorithms for P and M class PMUs which use adaptive filtering techniques in real time at up to 10 kHz sample rates, allowing consistent accuracy to be maintained across a ±33% frequency range. ROCOF errors can be reduced by factors of >40 for P class and >100 for M class devices
Efficient TV white space filter bank transceiver
Future devices operating in the TV white space (TVWS) spectrum will require to access different bands at different locations and times in order to avoid interference to incumbent users, requiring agility and sufficient spectral masks to satisfy regulators. Further, with very high-speed ADCs and DACs becoming reality, the purpose of this paper is to present a transceiver front-end capable of simultaneously up- and downconverting a significant portion of the UHF band. The proposed approach takes a two-stage filter-bank conversion for implementation on state-of-the-art FPGAs. We present three different parameterisations, which are compatible with the 40 TVWS channels between 470 and 790MHz in Europe, and compare them in terms of complexity and latency
Knowledge-Aided STAP Using Low Rank and Geometry Properties
This paper presents knowledge-aided space-time adaptive processing (KA-STAP)
algorithms that exploit the low-rank dominant clutter and the array geometry
properties (LRGP) for airborne radar applications. The core idea is to exploit
the fact that the clutter subspace is only determined by the space-time
steering vectors,
{red}{where the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization approach is employed to
compute the clutter subspace. Specifically, for a side-looking uniformly spaced
linear array, the} algorithm firstly selects a group of linearly independent
space-time steering vectors using LRGP that can represent the clutter subspace.
By performing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, the orthogonal
bases of the clutter subspace are obtained, followed by two approaches to
compute the STAP filter weights. To overcome the performance degradation caused
by the non-ideal effects, a KA-STAP algorithm that combines the covariance
matrix taper (CMT) is proposed. For practical applications, a reduced-dimension
version of the proposed KA-STAP algorithm is also developed. The simulation
results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, and show that
the proposed algorithms converge rapidly and provide a SINR improvement over
existing methods when using a very small number of snapshots.Comment: 16 figures, 12 pages. IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic
