New Developments in the Search for the Topology of the Universe

Multi-connected Universe models with space idenfication scales smaller than the size of the observable universe produce topological images in the catalogs of cosmic sources. In this review, we present the recent developments for the search of the topology of the universe focusing on three dimensional methods. We present the crystallographic method, we give a new lower bound on the size of locally Euclidean multi-connected universe model of 3000h1Mpc3000 h^{-1} \hbox{Mpc} based on this method and a quasar catalog, we discuss its successes and failures, and the attemps to generalise it. We finally introduce a new statistical method based on a collecting correlated pair (CCP) technique.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, Proceedings of the XIXth Texas meeting, Paris 14-18 december 1998, Proceedings of the XIXth Texas meeting, Eds. Persistent homology for 3D reconstruction evaluation

Space or voxel carving is a non-invasive technique that is used to produce a 3D volume and can be used in particular for the reconstruction of a 3D human model from images captured from a set of cameras placed around the subject. In [1], the authors present a technique to quantitatively evaluate spatially carved volumetric representations of humans using a synthetic dataset of typical sports motion in a tennis court scenario, with regard to the number of cameras used. In this paper, we compute persistent homology over the sequence of chain complexes obtained from the 3D outcomes with increasing number of cameras. This allows us to analyze the topological evolution of the reconstruction process, something which as far as we are aware has not been investigated to date

Multimapper: Data Density Sensitive Topological Visualization

Mapper is an algorithm that summarizes the topological information contained in a dataset and provides an insightful visualization. It takes as input a point cloud which is possibly high-dimensional, a filter function on it and an open cover on the range of the function. It returns the nerve simplicial complex of the pullback of the cover. Mapper can be considered a discrete approximation of the topological construct called Reeb space, as analysed in the 11-dimensional case by [Carriere et al.,2018]. Despite its success in obtaining insights in various fields such as in [Kamruzzaman et al., 2016], Mapper is an ad hoc technique requiring lots of parameter tuning. There is also no measure to quantify goodness of the resulting visualization, which often deviates from the Reeb space in practice. In this paper, we introduce a new cover selection scheme for data that reduces the obscuration of topological information at both the computation and visualisation steps. To achieve this, we replace global scale selection of cover with a scale selection scheme sensitive to local density of data points. We also propose a method to detect some deviations in Mapper from Reeb space via computation of persistence features on the Mapper graph.Comment: Accepted at ICDM

Subdivision surface fitting to a dense mesh using ridges and umbilics

Fitting a sparse surface to approximate vast dense data is of interest for many applications: reverse engineering, recognition and compression, etc. The present work provides an approach to fit a Loop subdivision surface to a dense triangular mesh of arbitrary topology, whilst preserving and aligning the original features. The natural ridge-joined connectivity of umbilics and ridge-crossings is used as the connectivity of the control mesh for subdivision, so that the edges follow salient features on the surface. Furthermore, the chosen features and connectivity characterise the overall shape of the original mesh, since ridges capture extreme principal curvatures and ridges start and end at umbilics. A metric of Hausdorff distance including curvature vectors is proposed and implemented in a distance transform algorithm to construct the connectivity. Ridge-colour matching is introduced as a criterion for edge flipping to improve feature alignment. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the feature-preserving capability of the proposed approach

Algorithm to Compute a Minimal Length Basis of Representative Cocycles of Cohomology Generators

An algorithm to compute a minimal length basis of representative cocycles of cohomology generators for 2D images is proposed. We based the computations on combinatorial pyramids foreseeing its future extension to 3D objects. In our research we are looking for a more refined topological description of deformable 2D and 3D shapes, than they are the often used Betti numbers. We define contractions on the object edges toward the inner of the object until the boundaries touch each other, building an irregular pyramid with this purpose. We show the possible use of the algorithm seeking the minimal cocycles that connect the convex deficiencies on a human silhouette. We used minimality in the number of cocycle edges in the basis, which is a robust description to rotations and noise

Fast 2D/3D object representation with growing neural gas

This work presents the design of a real-time system to model visual objects with the use of self-organising networks. The architecture of the system addresses multiple computer vision tasks such as image segmentation, optimal parameter estimation and object representation. We first develop a framework for building non-rigid shapes using the growth mechanism of the self-organising maps, and then we define an optimal number of nodes without overfitting or underfitting the network based on the knowledge obtained from information-theoretic considerations. We present experimental results for hands and faces, and we quantitatively evaluate the matching capabilities of the proposed method with the topographic product. The proposed method is easily extensible to 3D objects, as it offers similar features for efficient mesh reconstruction
