Performance issues in hybrid fiber radio communication systems due to nonlinear distortion effects in laser transmitters
With the increasing demand for broadband services, it is expected that hybrid fiber radio systems may be employed to provide high capacity access networks for both mobile and fixed users. In these systems, the radio frequency data signals are modulated onto an optical carrier at a mobile switching centre and then sent over fiber to a number of base stations, before being transmitted over air to the users. A possible method of generating the optical radio frequency data signals for distribution over fiber is to directly modulate the electrical signal onto an optical carrier using a laser diode. The major problem with this technique is that nonlinearities in electncal-to-optical conversion may seriously degrade the system performance.
In this work we initially examined the distribution of a wideband code division multiple access signal (centered around 6 GHz) through an optically fed microwave system. Our results show that the adjacent channel leakage ratio is degraded from -52 to -32 dBc after passing through the optical system. We then examined the technique of externally injecting light into the directly modulated laser, to extend the bandwidth of the laser diode and hence, increase it’s linear region to beyond the frequency of interest With this technique an improvement of over 10 dB in the adjacent channel leakage ratio of the signal was achieved. We subsequently went on to examine the distribution of a 5-channel radio frequency signal (each channel carrying 10 Mbit/s) through a hybrid fiber system As in the previous work, we examined how external light injection into the directly modulated laser could be used to improve system performance, and our results show an improvement of up to 5 dB.
Finally a model was designed using Matlab, which simulated the 5-channel system mentioned above. It used the laser rate equations to mimic the nonlinear effects of the laser diode Good correlation was observed between experimental and simulated results

A survey of self organisation in future cellular networks
This article surveys the literature over the period of the last decade on the emerging field of self organisation as applied to wireless cellular communication networks. Self organisation has been extensively studied and applied in adhoc networks, wireless sensor networks and autonomic computer networks; however in the context of wireless cellular networks, this is the first attempt to put in perspective the various efforts in form of a tutorial/survey. We provide a comprehensive survey of the existing literature, projects and standards in self organising cellular networks. Additionally, we also aim to present a clear understanding of this active research area, identifying a clear taxonomy and guidelines for design of self organising mechanisms. We compare strength and weakness of existing solutions and highlight the key research areas for further development. This paper serves as a guide and a starting point for anyone willing to delve into research on self organisation in wireless cellular communication networks
Decentralised Algorithms for Wireless Networks.
Designing and managing wireless networks is challenging for many
reasons. Two of the most crucial in 802.11 wireless networks are:
(a) variable per-user channel quality and (b) unplanned, ad-hoc deployment
of the Access Points (APs). Regarding (a), a typical consequence
is the selection, for each user, of a different bit-rate, based on
the channel quality. This in turn causes the so-called performance
“anomaly”, where the users with lower bit-rate transmit for most of
the time, causing the higher bit-rate users to receive less time for
transmission (air time). Regarding (b), an important issue is managing
interference. This can be mitigated by selecting different channels
for neighbouring APs, but needs to be carried out in a decentralised
way because often APs belong to different administrative domains, or
communication between APs is unfeasible. Tools for managing unplanned
deployment are also becoming important for other small cell
networks, such as femtocell networks, where decentralised allocation
of scrambling codes is a key task

de links ópticos para transportar os sinais desde a unidade central de processamento
até aos sites remotos (e vice-versa). A centralização do processamento
dos sinais de rádio frequência permite a partilha de equipamentos,
alocação dinâmica de recursos e uma manutenção mais simplificada do sistema.
Embora o conceito de gestão comum dos recursos rádio tenha despertado
grande interesse na comunidade científica em termos da melhor utilização
desses recursos e de novos modelos de negócio, a verdade é que a sua implementação
não tem sido fácil. A interligação entre diferentes componentes
de rede, normalmente localizados em locais diferentes, introduz um grande
atraso nas comunicações; por outro lado as implementações proprietárias e
a escassez de informação global não satisfazem os requisitos de um ambiente
extremamente dinâmico, como é o ambiente wireless. Uma topologia
centralizada permite ultrapassar estas contrariedades, disponibilizando uma
interligação eficiente entre as entidades locais e comuns de gestão de recursos
rádio.
Nesta dissertação é apresentada uma nova arquitectura de gestão comum de
recursos rádio, baseada no conceito de interligação entre diferentes tecnologias
de acesso. Esta arquitectura faz a gestão dos recursos rádio de forma
centralizada, onde os sinais rádio chegam sem qualquer pré-processamento.
Essa arquitectura é avaliada com a implementação de um algoritmo simples
de balanceamento da carga que segue a politica de minimização da
interferência e aumento da capacidade.
As simulações com duas tecnologias de acesso, quando consideradas separas
ou em agregado, mostraram um aumento do débito de pelo menos 51% para
o mesmo valor de interferência enquanto que o erro de simbolo decresce pelo
menos 20%.Radio over fibre technology involves the use of optical fibre links to distribute
radio frequency signals from a central location to remote sites (and viceversa).
The centralisation of radio frequency signals processing functions
enables equipment sharing, dynamic allocation of resources, and simplified
system operation and maintenance.
Despite the unquestionable interest concept of common radio resource management
from the point of view of resource usage and novel business models,
its implementation has not been easy. The interworking between the different
local radio resource management entities, usually located on different
places will not satisfy the requirements of the wireless dynamic behaviour
due to increase of delay in communication process, less information availability
and proprietary implementations. A centralised topology can overcome
the drawbacks of former wireless systems architecture interconnection
by providing an efficient common radio communication flow with the local
radio resource management entities.
In this thesis a novel common radio resource management architecture is
presented based on the concept of inter-working between different technologies.
This is a centralised architecture where the radio frequency signals are
delivered to the central location through the optical links. The new architecture
is evaluated with a common policy that minimises interference while
the overall system capacity is increased. The policy is implemented through
the load balancing algorithm.
The simulations of two radio access technologies when separately and jointly
considered show that when the load balancing algorithm is applied the available
throughput increases in at least 51% while the symbol error rate decreases
at least 20%

One of the major driving elements behind the explosive boom in wireless revolution is the advances in the field of modulation which plays a fundamental role in any communication system, and especially in cellular radio systems. Hence, the elaborate choice of an efficient modulation scheme is of paramount importance in the design and employment of any communications system. Work presented in this thesis is an investigation (study) of the feasibility of whether multilevel FSK modulation scheme would provide a viable alternative modem that can be employed in TDMA cordless communications systems. In the thesis the design and performance analysis of a non-coherent multi-level modem that offers a great deal of bandwidth efficiency and hardware simplicity is studied in detail. Simulation results demonstrate that 2RC pre-modulation filter pulse shaping with a modulation index of 0.3, and pre-detection filter normalized equivalent noise bandwidth of 1.5 are optimum system parameter values. Results reported in chapter 5 signify that an adjacent channel rejection factor of around 40 dB has been achieved at channel spacing of 1.5 times the symbol rate while the DECT system standards stipulated a much lower rejection limit criterion (25-30dB), implying that CP-QFSK modulation out-performs the conventional GMSK as it causes significantly less ACI, thus it is more spectrally efficient in a multi-channel system. However, measured system performance in terms of BER indicates that this system does not coexist well with other interferers as at delay spreads between 100ns to 200ns, which are commonly encountered in such indoor environment, a severe degradation in system performance apparently caused by multi-path fading has been noticed, and there exists a noise floor of about 40 dB, i.e. high irreducible error rate of less than 5.10-3. Digital predistortion of RF amplifiers using baseband injection for mobile broadband communications
Radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) represent the most challenging
design parts of wireless transmitters. In order to be more energy efficient, PAs should operate in nonlinear region where they produce distortion that significantly degrades the quality of signal at transmitter’s output. With the aim of reducing this distortion and improve signal quality, digital predistortion (DPD) techniques are widely used. This work focuses on improving the performances of DPDs in modern, next-generation
wireless transmitters. A new adaptive DPD based on an iterative injection approach is developed and experimentally verified using a 4G signal. The signal performances at transmitter output are notably improved, while the proposed DPD does not require large digital signal processing memory resources and computational complexity. Moreover, the injection-based DPD theory is extended to be applicable in concurrent dual-band wireless transmitters. A cross-modulation problem specific to concurrent dual-band transmitters is investigated in detail and novel DPD based on simultaneous injection of intermodulation and cross-modulation distortion products is proposed. In order to mitigate distortion compensation limit phenomena and memory effects in highly
nonlinear RF PAs, this DPD is further extended and complete generalised DPD system for concurrent dual-band transmitters is developed. It is clearly proved in experiments that the proposed predistorter remarkably improves the in-band and out-of-band
performances of both signals. Furthermore, it does not depend on frequency separation between frequency bands and has significantly lower complexity in comparison with previously reported concurrent dual-band DPDs
The characterisation and modelling of the wireless propagation channel in small cells scenarios
“A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy”.The rapid growth in wireless data traffic in recent years has placed a great strain on the wireless spectrum and the capacity of current wireless networks. In addition, the makeup of the typical wireless propagation environment is rapidly changing as a greater percentage of data traffic moves indoors, where the coverage of radio signals is poor. This dual fronted assault on coverage and capacity has meant that the tradition cellular model is no longer sustainable, as the gains from constructing new macrocells falls short of the increasing cost. The key emerging concept that can solve the aforementioned challenges is smaller base stations such as micro-, pico- and femto-cells collectively known as small cells. However with this solution come new challenges: while small cells are efficient at improving the indoor coverage and capacity; they compound the lack of spectrum even more and cause high levels of interference. Current channel models are not suited to characterise this interference as the small cells propagation environment is vast different. The result is that overall efficiency of the networks suffers. This thesis presents an investigation into the characteristics of the wireless propagation channel in small cell environments, including measurement, analysis, modelling, validation and extraction of channel data. Two comprehensive data collection campaigns were carried out, one of them employed a RUSK channel sounder and featured dual-polarised MIMO antennas. From the first dataset an empirical path loss model, adapted to typical indoor and outdoor scenarios found in small cell environments, was constructed using regression analysis and was validated using the second dataset. The model shows good accuracy for small cell environments and can be implemented in system level simulations quickly without much requirements
