Artificial neural networks for vibration based inverse parametric identifications: A review

Vibration behavior of any solid structure reveals certain dynamic characteristics and property parameters of that structure. Inverse problems dealing with vibration response utilize the response signals to find out input factors and/or certain structural properties. Due to certain drawbacks of traditional solutions to inverse problems, ANNs have gained a major popularity in this field. This paper reviews some earlier researches where ANNs were applied to solve different vibration-based inverse parametric identification problems. The adoption of different ANN algorithms, input-output schemes and required signal processing were denoted in considerable detail. In addition, a number of issues have been reported, including the factors that affect ANNs’ prediction, as well as the advantage and disadvantage of ANN approaches with respect to general inverse methods Based on the critical analysis, suggestions to potential researchers have also been provided for future scopes

Currently, the use of video games has purposes that go beyond entertainment and has been gaining prominence in the health area. In this sense, it was hypothesized that it is possible to discriminate biological signals, namely electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic signals, collected from different participants stimulated through three different commercial video games, Tetris, Bejeweled and Energy. To test this hypothesis, a protocol was developed with the Trier Social Stress Test to induce and dose stress in the subjects to similar levels before each game session, in order to observe the effects of the three test games (3 study groups) at the physiological level. Initially collected at 2000 Hz, the signals were resampled to 500 Hz and filtered using a Butterworth low-pass filter. After filtering the signals, several representative features of the study signals were collected. These features consisted of a series of nonlinear metrics such as the Lyapunov exponent and Correlation Dimension, self-similarity metrics such as the Hurst exponent, and detrended fluctuation analysis, fractal dimensions - such as the Katz and Higuchi fractal dimensions - and metrics of signal chaos and activity, such as signal energy, Logarithmic entropy and Shannon entropy, and a number of spectral metrics for the EEG signal, which should be able to help identify any differences in the stress response. As a final result, a discrimination accuracy of 100% was obtained to discriminate the three study groups, using the top 20% of features selected by the F-score technique, using the coarse K Nearest Neighbor classifier.

In this paper, a review of the evolution of the study of cylindrical gear dynamics is presented. After a brief historical introduction to the field, the first attempts to describe the complex interactions in those systems are analyzed introducing the dynamic factor and the first methodologies used to compute it. Next, the sources of excitation in geared systems are analyzed in detail and the models of the various contributions are discussed. Then, the paper focuses on the use of those sources in several dynamic models which are wildly different in terms of scope, applicability, complexity and methodology employed, ranging from simple analytical models, to lumped masses models up to multibody and finite element models. Finally, an outlook to the future evolution of the field is given and conclusions are drawn
