Best Practices for Evaluating Flight Deck Interfaces for Transport Category Aircraft with Particular Relevance to Issues of Attention, Awareness, and Understanding CAST SE-210 Output 2 Report 6 of 6
Attention, awareness, and understanding of the flight crew are a critical contributor to safety and the flight deck plays a critical role in supporting these cognitive functions. Changes to the flight deck need to be evaluated for whether the changed device provides adequate support for these functions. This report describes a set of diverse evaluation methods. The report recommends designing the interface-evaluation to span the phases of the device development, from early to late, and it provides methods appropriate at each phase. It describes the various ways in which an interface or interface component can fail to support awareness as potential issues to be assessed in evaluation. It summarizes appropriate methods to evaluate different issues concerning inadequate support for these functions, throughout the phases of development

Recommendations for Using Real-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring (rtCGM) Data for Insulin Adjustments in Type 1 Diabetes.
The clinical benefits of real time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) use have been well demonstrated in both CSII- and MDI-treated individuals in large clinical trials. However, recommendations for patient use of rtCGM in everyday life situations are lacking. This article provides guidance to clinicians and patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in effective use of rtCGM data, including glucose rate of change (ROC) arrows, for insulin dosing adjustments and other treatment decisions. The recommendations presented here are based on our own clinical experiences as endocrinologists, our personal experiences living with T1D using rtCGM, and findings from a recent survey of T1D patients who have successfully used rtCGM in their self-management. It is important that both clinicians and people with diabetes understand the utility and limitations of rtCGM. Maintaining a collaborative clinician-user relationship remains an important factor in safe, successful rtCGM use
CLASSIFYING AND RESPONDING TO NETWORK INTRUSIONS
Intrusion detection systems (IDS) have been widely adopted within the IT community, as
passive monitoring tools that report security related problems to system administrators.
However, the increasing number and evolving complexity of attacks, along with the
growth and complexity of networking infrastructures, has led to overwhelming numbers of
IDS alerts, which allow significantly smaller timeframe for a human to respond. The need
for automated response is therefore very much evident. However, the adoption of such
approaches has been constrained by practical limitations and administrators' consequent
mistrust of systems' abilities to issue appropriate responses.
The thesis presents a thorough analysis of the problem of intrusions, and identifies false
alarms as the main obstacle to the adoption of automated response. A critical examination
of existing automated response systems is provided, along with a discussion of why a new
solution is needed. The thesis determines that, while the detection capabilities remain
imperfect, the problem of false alarms cannot be eliminated. Automated response
technology must take this into account, and instead focus upon avoiding the disruption of
legitimate users and services in such scenarios. The overall aim of the research has
therefore been to enhance the automated response process, by considering the context of an
attack, and investigate and evaluate a means of making intelligent response decisions.
The realisation of this objective has included the formulation of a response-oriented
taxonomy of intrusions, which is used as a basis to systematically study intrusions and
understand the threats detected by an IDS. From this foundation, a novel Flexible
Automated and Intelligent Responder (FAIR) architecture has been designed, as the basis
from which flexible and escalating levels of response are offered, according to the context
of an attack. The thesis describes the design and operation of the architecture, focusing
upon the contextual factors influencing the response process, and the way they are
measured and assessed to formulate response decisions. The architecture is underpinned by
the use of response policies which provide a means to reflect the changing needs and
characteristics of organisations.
The main concepts of the new architecture were validated via a proof-of-concept prototype
system. A series of test scenarios were used to demonstrate how the context of an attack
can influence the response decisions, and how the response policies can be customised and
used to enable intelligent decisions. This helped to prove that the concept of flexible
automated response is indeed viable, and that the research has provided a suitable
contribution to knowledge in this important domain
Police as Alert Responders? Lessons Learned about Perceived Roles and Responses from Pretrial GPS Supervision of Domestic Violence Defendants
There is a substantial body of literature that examines police practices, behavioural responses, and victim cooperation when the police respond to intimate partner or domestic violence (IPV/DV) incidents. Less scholarly attention is given to the complex justice system response to IPV/DV incidents in which the police are one of many collaborative actors. A critical time in IPV/DV justice system processing is the period of time after arrest and before court disposition. Increasingly, the supervision of defendants in this pretrial period has been facilitated with the use of technology that creates new roles for the police. The present study seeks to explore perceived police roles and responses through an in-depth case study of a city-county municipality employing global positioning system pretrial supervision of IPV/DV defendants. Using interview data from pretrial probation officers, victim advocates, and victims of IPV/DV, this research offers lessons learned and police practice recommendations for working as a unified systems front to curtail IPV/DV crimes and improve communication between multiple justice system stakeholders
