Towards an understanding of occupational therapy professional practice knowledge in mental health services
This study critiqued historical, philosophical and political factors influencing occupational therapy (OT) professional practice knowledge in the context of public mental health services located in Victoria, Australia. The research was situated within the interpretive paradigm of scientific inquiry, using a hermeneutic process to construct and interpret five texts portraying the evolution of OT in mental health services. A series of conversations with key occupational therapists yielded material for further critical interpretation. Ethical approval was received from the Human Ethics Committee, University of Sydney. The first constructed and interpreted text situated early mental health services within the unique background of Australian convict settlements, 1788 - 1868. OT emerged within institutional environments echoing this past. The second and third texts interpreted OT professional literature, presenting a timeline of practice within mental health services. Occupational therapists implemented their craft-based practice within the psychiatric institutions of the 1940s and 1950s. Through the next two decades, occupational therapists made efforts to align practice with medical paradigms of knowledge before returning to occupation as a core of practice knowledge in later decades. Following closure of institutions during the 1990s, occupational therapists were challenged by relocation of services to community-based, multidisciplinary environments. The fourth text portrayed an interpretation of four transitions of practice, reflecting challenges influencing professional practice knowledge through five decades of practice. The final text interpreted six strands of professional practice knowledge, representing unifying threads woven through these decades. The study concluded that OT had a quiet, yet consistent role within mental health services in Victoria. Gender, changing social views and practice environments were significant influences on the evolution of occupation as a core of practice. The study adds to deeper understanding of the importance of practice knowledge for the development of the profession in complex socio-political environments
Employer expectations of public relations graduates’ transmedia storytelling proficiency
The rapid evolution of information and communication technologies presents challenges for public relations educators as they seek to develop pedagogical approaches that balance theoretical concepts with a practical or ‘working’ knowledge of new media platforms. The incipient practice of transmedia storytelling in public relations contexts offers a timely example of this pedagogical flashpoint. In this study, the authors explored the incorporation of transmedia storytelling within current public relations practice and employer expectations of the transmedia storytelling proficiency of recent public relations graduates.The study took a qualitative approach with findings based on 15 semi-structured interviews with senior public relations professionals from four Australian states and five industry sectors. Findings suggest transmedia storytelling campaigns of varying complexity are a common characteristic of contemporary public relations practice, and that digitally literate graduates who can provide evidence of a solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills in relation to transmedia storytelling are highly sought after by the practitioners who took part in the study
Clinical lactation practice: 20 years of evidence
Lactation consultants depend on a vast multidisciplinary knowledge base to support their practices. To coincide with the 20-year anniversary of the International Lactation Consultant Association, the authors sought to highlight the knowledge base to demonstrate how practice has been affected. Using standard databases, they extracted English-language scientific literature related to breastfeeding and maternal and infant health outcomes; factors associated with breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, and duration; lactation physiology; common breastfeeding challenges; breastfeeding practices within vulnerable populations; health professional support of breastfeeding; and breastfeeding practices in developing countries of Africa. Summaries of research are provided to demonstrate scientific method and knowledge evolution. As the knowledge of the biological, behavioral, and environmental factors that affect breastfeeding continues to grow, researchers and lactation consultants will identify additional research areas. Thus, the cycle of describing and explaining phenomena, testing interventions to improve practice, and ultimately improving breastfeeding outcomes worldwide will continue
Accelerating learning for pro-poor health markets
CommentaryBackground: Given the rapid evolution of health markets, learning is key to promoting the identification and uptake of health market policies and practices that better serve the needs of the poor. However there are significant challenges to learning about health markets. We discuss the different forms that learning takes, from the development of codified scientific knowledge, through to experience-based learning, all in relationship to health markets.
Discussion: Notable challenges to learning in health markets include the difficulty of acquiring data from private health care providers, designing evaluations that capture the complex dynamics present within health markets and developing communities of practice that encompass the diverse actors present within health markets, and building trust and mutual understanding across these groups.
The paper proposes experimentation with country-specific market data platforms that can integrate relevant evidence from different data sources, and simultaneously exploring strategies to secure better information on private providers and health markets. Possible approaches to adapting evaluation designs so that they are better able to take account of different and changing contexts as well as producing real time findings are discussed. Finally capturing informal knowledge about health markets is key. Communities of practice that bridge different health market actors can help to share such experience-based knowledge and in so doing, may help to formalize it. More geographically-focused communities of practice are needed, and such communities may be supported by innovation brokers and/or be built around member-based organizations.

But a walking shadow: designing, performing and learning on the virtual stage
Representing elements of reality within a medium, or taking aspects from one medium and placing them in another is an act of remediation. The process of this act, however, is largely taken for granted. Despite the fact that available information enables a qualitative assessment of the history of multimedia and their influences on different fields of knowledge, there are still some areas that require more focused research attention. For example, the relationship between media evolution and new developments in scenographic practice is currently under investigation. This article explores the issue of immediacy as a condition of modern theatre in the context of digital reality. It discusses the opportunities and challenges that recent technologies present to contemporary practitioners and theatre design educators, creating a lot of scope to break with conventions. Here, we present two case studies that look into technology-mediated learning about scenography through the employment of novel computer visualization techniques. The first case study is concerned with new ways of researching and learning about theatre through creative exploration of design artefacts. The second case study investigates the role of the Immersive Virtual World Second Life™ (SL) in effective teaching of scenography, and in creating and experiencing theatrical performances
Concepts and practices in agricultural extension in developing countries: a source book
The first chapter outlines the emerging challenges faced by agricultural R&D sectors and how paradigms are evolving in response to these changes and challenges. The second chapter traces the evolution of agricultural extension thinking and practice. It highlights some generic problems faced at various stages of evolution and approaches to address them. The Practice Of City Planning And Design In The Gulf Region: The Case Of Abu Dhabi, Doha And Manama
This research study explores the Arabian Gulf region’s practice of city planning and design in response to the active forces of globalization. The focused scope of analysis is justified by the commonalities that unite the Arabian Gulf region, among them is the active response to globalization and the rapid urbanization process. Following the coverage of the regional context, an investigation of the city planning and design is presented in the study as a case study approach. Three coastal Arabian Gulf capitals -Abu Dhabi, Doha and Manama- are selected as primary units of analysis, investigating their urban evolution, the recent planning practice and urban development vision. The aim of the research study is to establish a theoretical connection between Gulf cities relying on their commonalities. The hypothesis assumes globalization to create a common urban planning practice based on (A) geopolitical facts, (B) historical evolution of urbanism and (C) the recent urban development trends that shape Gulf capital cities. The findings reveal that the urban practice in the Gulf region has been constantly altered in response to global challenges. New trends of megaprojects and international planning are dominating the urban development and growth of Gulf capital cities, where the knowledge of international expertise is flowing into the local planning practice. Therefore, the future of the urbanism is expected to focus on comprehensiveness, master-planning in the national scale, as well as establishing a regional interconnection as a strategic development vision unifying the whole Arabian Gulf region
Development and Evolution of a Model Interprofessional Education Program in Parkinson’s disease: A Ten-year Experience
OBJECTIVE This paper describes development, evolution and learner reactions in a model interprofessional education program for medical, nursing, physician assistant, occupational therapy, physical therapy, music therapy, social work and speech-language pathology practitioners. Sponsored by the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) (currently Parkinson’s Foundation), Allied Team Training for Parkinson (ATTP) is a U.S.-based multi-day interprofessional education program in best practices for integrated, interprofessional team-based Parkinson’s disease (PD) care. NPF sponsored 26 ATTP trainings from 2003 to 2013. METHODS This mixed methods evaluation uses case study document review and observation to outline ATTP curriculum development, evolution, and implementation challenges. Learner-perceived effectiveness ratings, knowledge change, pre-post ratings on the Team Skills Scale, confidence in working with people with PD and caregivers, and trainee-reported practice changes at 6-month follow-up were collected. RESULTS Qualitative results identified multiple factors in building an effective interprofessional education program, including interprofessional team practice opportunities through case-based learning, engaging care networks and continuous feedback loops for program improvement. Quantitative results showed that trainees across professions, geographic regions and work settings rated the overall program and curriculum effectiveness, amount of new knowledge and knowledge change very highly. ATTP resulted in significant post-training improvement in team skills, confidence in working with PD, and post-training self-reported practice changes. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that ATTP is an effective interprofessional education program that could be replicated or adapted to other settings and neurodegenerative or chronic illnesses. The model of combining interprofessional team training with disease-specific curriculum content appears to be an effective “next practice” in continuing professional development
Reviewing research priorities in weed ecology, evolution and management: A horizon scan
Weedy plants pose a major threat to food security, biodiversity, ecosystem services and consequently to human health and wellbeing. However, many currently used weed management approaches are increasingly unsustainable. To address this knowledge and practice gap, in June 2014, 35 weed and invasion ecologists, weed scientists, evolutionary biologists and social scientists convened a workshop to explore current and future perspectives and approaches in weed ecology and management. A horizon scanning exercise ranked a list of 124 pre-submitted questions to identify a priority list of 30 questions. These questions are discussed under seven themed headings that represent areas for renewed and emerging focus for the disciplines of weed research and practice. The themed areas considered the need for transdisciplinarity, increased adoption of integrated weed management and agroecological approaches, better understanding of weed evolution, climate change, weed invasiveness and finally, disciplinary challenges for weed science. Almost all the challenges identified rested on the need for continued efforts to diversify and integrate agroecological, socio-economic and technological approaches in weed management. These challenges are not newly conceived, though their continued prominence as research priorities highlights an ongoing intransigence that must be addressed through a more system-oriented and transdisciplinary research agenda that seeks an embedded integration of public and private research approaches. This horizon scanning exercise thus set out the building blocks needed for future weed management research and practice; however, the challenge ahead is to identify effective ways in which sufficient research and implementation efforts can be directed towards these needs
