A P2P Platform for real-time multicast video streaming leveraging on scalable multiple descriptions to cope with bandwidth fluctuations
In the immediate future video distribution applications will increase their diffusion thanks tothe ever-increasing user capabilities and improvements in the Internet access speed and performance. The target of this paper is to propose a content delivery system for real-time streaming services based ona peer-to-peer approach that exploits multicast overlay organization of the peers to address thechallenges due to bandwidth heterogeneity. To improve reliability and flexibility, video is coded using ascalable multiple description approach that allows delivery of sub-streams over multiple trees andallows rate adaptation along the trees as the available bandwidth changes. Moreover, we have deployeda new algorithm for tree-based topology management of the overlay network. In fact, tree based overlaynetworks better perform in terms of end-to-end delay and ordered delivery of video flow packets withrespect to mesh based ones. We also show with a case study that the proposed system works better thansimilar systems using only either multicast or multiple trees
Robust P2P Live Streaming
Projecte fet en col.laboració amb la Fundació i2CATThe provisioning of robust real-time communication services (voice, video, etc.) or media contents through the Internet in a distributed manner is an important challenge,
which will strongly influence in current and future Internet evolution. Aware of this, we
are developing a project named Trilogy leaded by the i2CAT Foundation, which has as
main pillar the study, development and evaluation of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Live
streaming architectures for the distribution of high-quality media contents. In this
context, this work concretely covers media coding aspects and proposes the use of
Multiple Description Coding (MDC) as a flexible solution for providing robust and
scalable live streaming over P2P networks. This work describes current state of the art
in media coding techniques and P2P streaming architectures, presents the
implemented prototype as well as its simulation and validation results
Video-on-Demand over Internet: a survey of existing systems and solutions
Video-on-Demand is a service where movies are delivered to distributed users with low delay and free interactivity. The traditional client/server architecture experiences scalability issues to provide video streaming services, so there have been many proposals of systems, mostly based on a peer-to-peer or on a hybrid server/peer-to-peer solution, to solve this issue. This work presents a survey of the currently existing or proposed systems and solutions, based upon a subset of representative systems, and defines selection criteria allowing to classify these systems. These criteria are based on common questions such as, for example, is it video-on-demand or live streaming, is the architecture based on content delivery network, peer-to-peer or both, is the delivery overlay tree-based or mesh-based, is the system push-based or pull-based, single-stream or multi-streams, does it use data coding, and how do the clients choose their peers. Representative systems are briefly described to give a summarized overview of the proposed solutions, and four ones are analyzed in details. Finally, it is attempted to evaluate the most promising solutions for future experiments. Résumé La vidéo à la demande est un service où des films sont fournis à distance aux utilisateurs avec u
Video streaming with quality adaption using collaborative active grid networks
Due to the services and demands of the end
users, Distributed Computing (Grid Technology,
Web Services, and Peer-to-Peer) has been
developedrapidJy in thelastyears. Theconvergence
of these architectures has been possible using
mechanisms such as Collaborative work and
Resources Sharing. Grid computing is a platform to
enable flexible, secure, controlled, scalable,
ubiquitous and heterogeneous services. On the
other hand, Video Streaming applications demand
a greater deployment over connected Internet users.
The present work uses the Acti ve Grid technology
as a fundamental platform to give a solution of
multimediacontentrecovery. This solution takes
into account the following key concepts:
collaborative work, multi-source recovery and
adapti ve quality. A new archi tecture is designed to
deliver video content over a Grid Network. The
acti ve and passi ve roles of the nodes are important
to guarantee a high quality and efficiency for the
video streaming system. The acti ve sender nodes
are the content suppliers, while the passive sender
nodes wiU perform the backup functions, based on
global resource control policies. The aim of the
backup node is minirnize the time to restore the
systemin caseoffailures. In this way, all participant
peers work in a collaborati ve manner following a
mul ti -source recovery scheme.
Furthermore, Video La yered Encoding is used
to manage the video data in a high scalable way,
di viding the video in multiple layers. This video
codification scheme enables thequality adaptation
according to the availability of system resources. In
addition, a buffer by sender peer and by layer is
needed for an effecti ve control ofthe video retrieve.
The QoS will fit considering the state of each buffer
and the measurement tools provide by the Acti ve
