The Dynamics of Vehicular Networks in Urban Environments
Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) have emerged as a platform to support
intelligent inter-vehicle communication and improve traffic safety and
performance. The road-constrained, high mobility of vehicles, their unbounded
power source, and the emergence of roadside wireless infrastructures make
VANETs a challenging research topic. A key to the development of protocols for
inter-vehicle communication and services lies in the knowledge of the
topological characteristics of the VANET communication graph. This paper
explores the dynamics of VANETs in urban environments and investigates the
impact of these findings in the design of VANET routing protocols. Using both
real and realistic mobility traces, we study the networking shape of VANETs
under different transmission and market penetration ranges. Given that a number
of RSUs have to be deployed for disseminating information to vehicles in an
urban area, we also study their impact on vehicular connectivity. Through
extensive simulations we investigate the performance of VANET routing protocols
by exploiting the knowledge of VANET graphs analysis.Comment: Revised our testbed with even more realistic mobility traces. Used

Implementation and analysis of location-based routing protocols for manets
This thesis concerns routing protocols for MANETs with a particular focus on location-based ones. After a deep overview of the literature, one regular routing protocol, DYMO, and two location-based (LB) ones, DYMOselfwd and AODV-Line, have been selected for further study. To this end, they have been implemented and simulated with the OMNET++ simulator. The scenarios are chosen to evaluate the impact of the node density, the nodes' mobility behaviour and of the ping payload on the performance of the routing protocols, in terms of scalability and ability to recover from route disruptions in a mobile scenario. In addition, the impact of an error in the location information is also analysed in the case of the two LB protocols
Topology design for time-varying networks
Traditional wireless networks seek to support end-to-end communication through either a single-hop wireless link to infrastructure or multi-hop wireless path to some destination. However, in some wireless networks (such as delay tolerant networks, or mobile social networks), due to sparse node distribution, node mobility, and time-varying network topology, end-to-end paths between the source and destination are not always available. In such networks, the lack of continuous connectivity, network partitioning, and long delays make design of network protocols very challenging. Previous DTN or time-varying network research mainly focuses on routing and information propagation. However, with large number of wireless devices' participation, and a lot of network functionality depends on the topology, how to maintain efficient and dynamic topology of a time-varying network becomes crucial. In this dissertation, I model a time-evolving network as a directed time-space graph which includes both spacial and temporal information of the network, then I study various topology control problems with such time-space graphs.
First, I study the basic topology design problem where the links of the network are reliable. It aims to build a sparse structure from the original time-space graph such that (1) the network is still connected over time and/or supports efficient routing between any two nodes; (2) the total cost of the structure is minimized. I first prove that this problem is NP-hard, and then propose several greedy-based methods as solutions.
Second, I further study a cost-efficient topology design problem, which not only requires the above two objective, but also guarantees that the spanning ratio of the topology is bounded by a given threshold. This problem is also NP-hard, and I give several greedy algorithms to solve it.
Last, I consider a new topology design problem by relaxing the assumption of reliable links. Notice that in wireless networks the topologies are not quit predictable and the links are often unreliable. In this new model, each link has a probability to reflect its reliability. The new reliable topology design problem aims to build a sparse structure from the original space-time graph such that (1) for any pair of devices, there is a space-time path connecting them with the reliability larger than a required threshold; (2) the total cost of the structure is minimized. Several heuristics are proposed, which can significantly reduce the total cost of the topology while maintain the connectivity or reliability over time.
Extensive simulations on both random networks and real-life tracing data have been conducted, and results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods

Delimitated Anti Jammer Scheme for Internet of Vehicle:Machine Learning based Security Approach
Recently, Internet of vehicles (IoV) has witnessed significant research and development attention in both academia and industries due to the potential towards addressing traffic incidences and supporting green mobility. With the growing vehicular network density, jamming signal centric security issues have become challenging task for IoV network designers and traffic applications developers. Global positioning system (GPS) and roadside unit (RSU) centric related literature on location-based security approaches lacks signal characteristics consideration for identifying vehicular network intruders or jammers. In this context, this paper proposes a machine learning oriented as Delimitated Anti Jamming protocol for vehicular traffic environments. It focuses on jamming vehicle's discriminated signal detection and filtration for revealing precise location of jamming effected vehicles. In particular, a vehicular jamming system model is presented focusing on localization of vehicles in delimitated jamming environments. A foster rationalizer is employed to examine the frequency changes caused in signal strength due to the jamming or external attacks. A machine learning open-sourced algorithm namely, CatBoost has been utilized focusing on decision tree relied algorithm to predict the locations of jamming vehicle. The performance of the proposed anti jammer scheme is comparatively evaluated with the state of the art techniques. The evaluation attests the resistive characteristics of the anti-jammer technique considering precision, recall, F1 score and delivery accuracy metrics
The impact of message replication on the performance of opportunistic networks for sensed data collection
Opportunistic networks (OppNets) provide a scalable solution for collecting delay-tolerant data from sensors to their respective gateways. Portable handheld user devices contribute significantly to the scalability of OppNets since their number increases according to user population and they closely follow human movement patterns. Hence, OppNets for sensed data collection are characterised by high node population and degrees of spatial locality inherent to user movement. We study the impact of these characteristics on the performance of existing OppNet message replication techniques. Our findings reveal that the existing replication techniques are not specifically designed to cope with these characteristics. This raises concerns regarding excessive message transmission overhead and throughput degradations due to resource constraints and technological limitations associated with portable handheld user devices. Based on concepts derived from the study, we suggest design guidelines to augment existing message replication techniques. We also follow our design guidelines to propose a message replication technique, namely Locality Aware Replication (LARep). Simulation results show that LARep achieves better network performance under high node population and degrees of spatial locality as compared with existing techniques
Performance of management solutions and cooperation approaches for vehicular delay-tolerant networks
A wide range of daily-life applications supported by vehicular networks attracted the interest,
not only from the research community, but also from governments and the automotive
industry. For example, they can be used to enable services that assist drivers on the roads (e.g.,
road safety, traffic monitoring), to spread commercial and entertainment contents (e.g., publicity),
or to enable communications on remote or rural regions where it is not possible to have
a common network infrastructure. Nonetheless, the unique properties of vehicular networks
raise several challenges that greatly impact the deployment of these networks.
Most of the challenges faced by vehicular networks arise from the highly dynamic network
topology, which leads to short and sporadic contact opportunities, disruption, variable
node density, and intermittent connectivity. This situation makes data dissemination an interesting
research topic within the vehicular networking area, which is addressed by this study.
The work described along this thesis is motivated by the need to propose new solutions to deal
with data dissemination problems in vehicular networking focusing on vehicular delay-tolerant
networks (VDTNs).
To guarantee the success of data dissemination in vehicular networks scenarios it is important
to ensure that network nodes cooperate with each other. However, it is not possible
to ensure a fully cooperative scenario. This situation makes vehicular networks suitable to the
presence of selfish and misbehavior nodes, which may result in a significant decrease of the
overall network performance. Thus, cooperative nodes may suffer from the overwhelming load
of services from other nodes, which comprises their performance.
Trying to solve some of these problems, this thesis presents several proposals and studies
on the impact of cooperation, monitoring, and management strategies on the network performance
of the VDTN architecture. The main goal of these proposals is to enhance the network
performance. In particular, cooperation and management approaches are exploited to improve
and optimize the use of network resources. It is demonstrated the performance gains attainable
in a VDTN through both types of approaches, not only in terms of bundle delivery probability,
but also in terms of wasted resources.
The results and achievements observed on this research work are intended to contribute
to the advance of the state-of-the-art on methods and strategies for overcome the challenges
that arise from the unique characteristics and conceptual design of vehicular networks.O vasto número de aplicações e cenários suportados pelas redes veiculares faz com que
estas atraiam o interesse não só da comunidade científica, mas também dos governos e da indústria
automóvel. A título de exemplo, estas podem ser usadas para a implementação de serviços
e aplicações que podem ajudar os condutores dos veículos a tomar decisões nas estradas, para
a disseminação de conteúdos publicitários, ou ainda, para permitir que existam comunicações
em zonas rurais ou remotas onde não é possível ter uma infraestrutura de rede convencional.
Contudo, as propriedades únicas das redes veiculares fazem com que seja necessário ultrapassar
um conjunto de desafios que têm grande impacto na sua aplicabilidade.
A maioria dos desafios que as redes veiculares enfrentam advêm da grande mobilidade dos
veículos e da topologia de rede que está em constante mutação. Esta situação faz com que este
tipo de rede seja suscetível de disrupção, que as oportunidades de contacto sejam escassas e de
curta duração, e que a ligação seja intermitente. Fruto destas adversidades, a disseminação dos
dados torna-se um tópico de investigação bastante promissor na área das redes veiculares e por
esta mesma razão é abordada neste trabalho de investigação. O trabalho descrito nesta tese é
motivado pela necessidade de propor novas abordagens para lidar com os problemas inerentes
à disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares.
Para garantir o sucesso da disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares é importante
que este tipo de redes garanta a cooperação entre os nós da rede. Contudo, neste tipo de ambientes
não é possível garantir um cenário totalmente cooperativo. Este cenário faz com que
as redes veiculares sejam suscetíveis à presença de nós não cooperativos que comprometem
seriamente o desempenho global da rede. Por outro lado, os nós cooperativos podem ver o seu
desempenho comprometido por causa da sobrecarga de serviços que poderão suportar.
Para tentar resolver alguns destes problemas, esta tese apresenta várias propostas e estudos
sobre o impacto de estratégias de cooperação, monitorização e gestão de rede no desempenho
das redes veiculares com ligações intermitentes (Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks
- VDTNs). O objetivo das propostas apresentadas nesta tese é melhorar o desempenho global
da rede. Em particular, as estratégias de cooperação e gestão de rede são exploradas para
melhorar e optimizar o uso dos recursos da rede. Ficou demonstrado que o uso deste tipo de
estratégias e metodologias contribui para um aumento significativo do desempenho da rede,
não só em termos de agregados de pacotes (“bundles”) entregues, mas também na diminuição
do volume de recursos desperdiçados.
Os resultados observados neste trabalho procuram contribuir para o avanço do estado
da arte em métodos e estratégias que visam ultrapassar alguns dos desafios que advêm das
propriedades e desenho conceptual das redes veiculares
Conception d’un support de communication opportuniste pour les services pervasifs
The vision of pervasive computing of building interactive smart spaces in the physical environment is gradually heading from the research domain to reality. Computing capacity is moving beyond personal computers to many day-to-day devices, and these devices become, thanks to multiple interfaces, capable of communicating directly with one another or of connecting to the Internet.In this thesis, we are interested in a kind of pervasive computing environment that forms what we call an Intermittently Connected Hybrid Network (ICHN). An ICHN is a network composed of two parts: a fixed and a mobile part. The fixed part is formed of some fixed infostations (potentially connected together with some fixed infrastructure, typically the Internet). The mobile part, on the other hand, is formed of smartphones carried by nomadic people. While the fixed part is mainly stable, the mobile part is considered challenging and form what is called an Opportunistic Network. Indeed, relying on short-range communication means coupled with the free movements of people and radio interferences lead to frequent disconnections. To perform a network-wide communication, the "store, carry and forward" approach is usually applied. With this approach, a message can be stored temporarily on a device, in order to be forwarded later when circumstances permit. Any device can opportunistically be used as an intermediate relay to facilitate the propagation of a message from one part of the network to another. In this context, the provisioning of pervasive services is particularly challenging, and requires revisiting important components of the provisioning process, such as performing pervasive service discovery and invocation with the presence of connectivity disruptions and absence of both end-to-end paths and access continuity due to user mobility. This thesis addresses the problems of providing network-wide service provisioning in ICHNs and proposes solutions for pervasive service discovery, invocation and access continuity. Concerning service discovery challenge, we propose TAO-DIS, a service discovery protocol that performs an automatic and fast service discovery mechanism. TAO-DIS takes into account the hybrid nature of an ICHN and that the majority of services are provided by infostations. It permits mobile users to discover all the services in the surrounding environment in order to identify and choose the most convenient ones. To allow users to interact with the discovered services, we introduce TAO-INV. TAO-INV is a service invocation protocol specifically designed for ICHNs. It relies on a set of heuristics and mechanisms that ensures performing efficient routing of messages (both service requests and responses) between fixed infostations and mobile clients while preserving both low values of overhead and round trip delays. Since some infostations in the network might be connected, we propose a soft handover mechanism that modifies the invocation process in order to reduce service delivery delays. This handover mechanism takes into consideration the opportunistic nature of the mobile part of the ICHN. We have performed various experiments to evaluate our solutions and compare them with other protocols designed for ad hoc and opportunistic networks. The obtained results tend to prove that our solutions outperform these protocols, namely thanks to the optimizations we have developed for ICHNs. In our opinion, building specialized protocols that benefit from techniques specifically designed for ICHNs is an approach that should be pursued, in complement with research works on general-purpose communication protocolsLa vision de l'informatique ubiquitaire permettant de construire des espaces intelligents interactifs dans l'environnement physique passe, peu à peu, du domaine de la recherche à la réalité. La capacité de calcul ne se limite plus à l'ordinateur personnel mais s'intègre dans de multiples appareils du quotidien, et ces appareils deviennent, grâce à plusieurs interfaces, capables de communiquer directement les uns avec les autres ou bien de se connecter à Internet.Dans cette thèse, nous nous sommes intéressés à un type d'environnement cible de l'informatique ubiquitaire qui forme ce que nous appelons un réseau hybride à connexions intermittentes (ICHN). Un ICHN est un réseau composé de deux parties : une partie fixe et une partie mobile. La partie fixe est constituée de plusieurs infostations fixes (potentiellement reliées entre elles avec une infrastructure fixe, typiquement l'Internet). La partie mobile, quant à elle, est constituée de smartphones portés par des personnes nomades. Tandis que la partie fixe est principalement stable, la partie mobile pose un certain nombre de défis propres aux réseaux opportunistes. En effet, l'utilisation de moyens de communication à courte portée couplée à des déplacements de personnes non contraints et à des interférences radio induit des déconnexions fréquentes. Le concept du "store, carry and forward" est alors habituellement appliqué pour permettre la communication sur l'ensemble du réseau. Avec cette approche, un message peut être stocké temporairement sur un appareil avant d'être transféré plus tard quand les circonstances sont plus favorables. Ainsi, n'importe quel appareil devient un relai de transmission opportuniste qui permet de faciliter la propagation d'un message dans le réseau. Dans ce contexte, la fourniture de services est particulièrement problématique, et exige de revisiter les composants principaux du processus de fourniture, tels que la découverte et l'invocation de service, en présence de ruptures de connectivité et en l'absence de chemins de bout en bout. Cette thèse aborde les problèmes de fourniture de service sur l'ensemble d'un ICHN et propose des solutions pour la découverte de services, l'invocation et la continuité d'accès. En ce qui concerne le défi de la découverte de services, nous proposons TAO-DIS, un protocole qui met en œuvre un mécanisme automatique et rapide de découverte de services. TAO-DIS tient compte de la nature hybride d'un ICHN et du fait que la majorité des services sont fournis par des infostations. Il permet aux utilisateurs mobiles de découvrir tous les services dans l'environnement afin d'identifier et de choisir les plus intéressants. Pour permettre aux utilisateurs d'interagir avec les services découverts, nous introduisons TAO-INV. TAO-INV est un protocole d'invocation de service spécialement conçu pour les ICHN. Il se fonde sur un ensemble d'heuristiques et de mécanismes qui assurent un acheminement efficace des messages (des requêtes et des réponses de services) entre les infostations fixes et les clients mobiles tout en conservant un surcoût et des temps de réponses réduits. Puisque certaines infostations dans le réseau peuvent être reliées entre elles, nous proposons un mécanisme de continuité d'accès (handover) qui modifie le processus d'invocation pour réduire les délais de délivrance. Dans sa définition, il est tenu compte de la nature opportuniste de la partie mobile de l'ICHN. Nous avons mené diverses expérimentations pour évaluer nos solutions et les comparer à d'autres protocoles conçus pour des réseaux ad hoc et des réseaux opportunistes. Les résultats obtenus tendent à montrer que nos solutions surpassent ces autres protocoles, notamment grâce aux optimisations que nous avons développées pour les ICHN. À notre avis, construire des protocoles spécialisés qui tirent parti des techniques spécifiquement conçues pour les ICHN est une approche à poursuivre en complément des recherches sur des protocoles de communication polyvalent
Routing protocol for V2X communications for Urban VANETs
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) have been attracting tremendous attention in both academia and industry due to emerging applications that pave the way towards safer enjoyable journeys and inclusive digital partnerships. Undoubtedly, these ITS applications will demand robust routing protocols that not only focus on Inter-Vehicle Communications but also on providing fast, reliable, and secure access to the infrastructure. This thesis aims mainly to introduce the challenges of data packets routing through urban environment using the help of infrastructure.
Broadcasting transmission is an essential operational technique that serves a broad range of applications which demand different restrictive QoS provisioning levels. Although broadcast communication has been investigated widely in highway vehicular networks, it is undoubtedly still a challenge in the urban environment due to the obstacles, such as high buildings. In this thesis, the Road-Topology based Broadcast Protocol (RTBP) is proposed, a distance and contention-based forwarding scheme suitable for both urban and highway vehicular environments. RTBP aims at assigning the highest forwarding priority to a vehicle, called a mobile repeater, having the greatest capability to send the packet in multiple directions. In this way, RTBP effectively reduces the number of competing vehicles and minimises the number of hops required to retransmit the broadcast packets around the intersections to cover the targeted area. By investigating the RTBP under realistic urban scenarios against well-known broadcast protocols, eMDR and TAF, that are dedicated to retransmitting the packets around intersections, the results showed the superiority of the RTBP in delivering the most critical warning information for 90% of vehicles with significantly lower delay of 58% and 70% compared to eMDR and TAF. The validation of this performance was clear when the increase in the number of vehicles.
Secondly, a Fast and Reliable Hybrid routing (FRHR) protocol is introduced for efficient infrastructure access which is capable of handling efficient vehicle to vehicle communications. Interface to infrastructure is provided by carefully placed RoadSide Units (RSUs) which broadcast beacons in a multi-hop fashion in constrained areas. This enables vehicles proactively to maintain fresh minimum-delay routes to other RSUs while reactively discovering routes to nearby vehicles. The proposed protocol utilizes RSUs connected to the wired backbone network to relay packets toward remote vehicles. A vehicle selects an RSU to register with according to the expected mean delay instead of the device’s remoteness. The FRHR performance is evaluated against established infrastructure routing protocols, Trafroute, IGSR and RBVT-R that are dedicated to for urban environment, the results showed an improvement of 20% to 33% in terms of packet delivery ratio and lower latency particularly in sparse networks due to its rapid response to changes in network connectivity.
Thirdly, focusing on increasing FRHR’s capability to provide more stable and durable routes to support the QoS requirements of expected wide-range ITS applications on the urban environment, a new route selection mechanism is introduced, aiming at selecting highly connected crossroads. The new protocol is called, Stable Infrastructure Routing Protocol (SIRP). Intensive simulation results showed that SIRP offers low end-to-end delay and high delivery ratio with varying traffic density, while resolving the problem of frequent link failures
