Integrality and cutting planes in semidefinite programming approaches for combinatorial optimization
Many real-life decision problems are discrete in nature. To solve such problems as mathematical optimization problems, integrality constraints are commonly incorporated in the model to reflect the choice of finitely many alternatives. At the same time, it is known that semidefinite programming is very suitable for obtaining strong relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems. In this dissertation, we study the interplay between semidefinite programming and integrality, where a special focus is put on the use of cutting-plane methods. Although the notions of integrality and cutting planes are well-studied in linear programming, integer semidefinite programs (ISDPs) are considered only recently. We show that manycombinatorial optimization problems can be modeled as ISDPs. Several theoretical concepts, such as the Chvátal-Gomory closure, total dual integrality and integer Lagrangian duality, are studied for the case of integer semidefinite programming. On the practical side, we introduce an improved branch-and-cut approach for ISDPs and a cutting-plane augmented Lagrangian method for solving semidefinite programs with a large number of cutting planes. Throughout the thesis, we apply our results to a wide range of combinatorial optimization problems, among which the quadratic cycle cover problem, the quadratic traveling salesman problem and the graph partition problem. Our approaches lead to novel, strong and efficient solution strategies for these problems, with the potential to be extended to other problem classes
Quantum Algorithm Implementations for Beginners
As quantum computers become available to the general public, the need has
arisen to train a cohort of quantum programmers, many of whom have been
developing classical computer programs for most of their careers. While
currently available quantum computers have less than 100 qubits, quantum
computing hardware is widely expected to grow in terms of qubit count, quality,
and connectivity. This review aims to explain the principles of quantum
programming, which are quite different from classical programming, with
straightforward algebra that makes understanding of the underlying fascinating
quantum mechanical principles optional. We give an introduction to quantum
computing algorithms and their implementation on real quantum hardware. We
survey 20 different quantum algorithms, attempting to describe each in a
succinct and self-contained fashion. We show how these algorithms can be
implemented on IBM's quantum computer, and in each case, we discuss the results
of the implementation with respect to differences between the simulator and the
actual hardware runs. This article introduces computer scientists, physicists,
and engineers to quantum algorithms and provides a blueprint for their
implementations
Numerical and analytical studies of quantum error correction
A reliable large-scale quantum computer, if built, can solve many real-life problems exponentially faster than the existing digital devices. The biggest obstacle to building one is that they are extremely sensitive and error-prone regardless of the selection of physical implementation. Both data storage and data manipulation require careful implementation and precise control due to its quantum mechanical nature. For the development of a practical and scalable computer, it is essential to identify possible quantum errors and reduce them throughout every layer of the hierarchy of quantum computation.
In this dissertation, we present our investigation into new methods to reduce errors in quantum computers from three different directions: quantum memory, quantum control, and quantum error correcting codes. For quantum memory, we pursue the potential of the quantum equivalent of a magnetic hard drive using two-body-interaction structures in fractal dimensions. With regard to quantum control, we show that it is possible to arbitrarily reduce error when manipulating multiple quantum bits using a technique popular in nuclear magnetic resonance. Finally, we introduce an efficient tool to study quantum error correcting codes and present analysis of the codes' performance on model quantum architectures.Ph.D
Special oils for halal and safe cosmetics
Three types of non conventional oils were extracted, analyzed and tested for toxicity. Date palm kernel oil (DPKO), mango kernel oil (MKO) and Ramputan seed oil (RSO). Oil content for tow cultivars of dates Deglect Noor and Moshkan was 9.67% and 7.30%, respectively. The three varieties of mango were found to contain about 10% oil in average. The red yellow types of Ramputan were found to have 11 and 14% oil, respectively. The phenolic compounds in DPKO, MKO and RSO were 0.98, 0.88 and 0.78 mg/ml Gallic acid equivalent, respectively. Oils were analyzed for their fatty acid composition and they are rich in oleic acid C18:1 and showed the presence of (dodecanoic acid) lauric acid C12:0, which reported to appear some antimicrobial activities. All extracted oils, DPKO, MKO and RSO showed no toxic effect using prime shrimp bioassay. Since these oils are stable, melt at skin temperature, have good lubricity and are great source of essential fatty acids; they could be used as highly moisturizing, cleansing and nourishing oils because of high oleic acid content. They are ideal for use in such halal cosmetics such as Science, Engineering and Technology 75 skin care and massage, hair-care, soap and shampoo products
