MODALNOŚĆ EPISTEMICZNA – ANALIZA KORPUSOWA WYKŁADNIKÓW MODALNOŚCI EPISTEMICZNEJ W WYROKACH UNIJNYCH I KRAJOWYCH
The aim of this paper is to establish the repertoire and distribution of verbal and adverbial exponents of epistemic modality in English- and Polish-language judgments passed by the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) and non-translated judgments passed by the Supreme Court of Poland (SN). The study applies a model for categorizing exponents of epistemicity with regard to their (i) level (high-, medium- and low-level of certainty, necessity or possibility expressed by the markers; primary dimension), (ii) perspective (own vs. reported perspective), (iii) opinion (based either on facts or beliefs) and (iv) time (the embedding of epistemic markers in sentences relating to the past, present or future) (contextual dimensions). It examines the degree of intra-generic convergence of translated EU judgments and non-translated national judgments in terms of the employment of epistemic markers, as well as the degree of authoritativeness of judicial argumentation, and determines whether the frequent use of epistemic markers constitutes a generic feature of judgments. The research material consists of a parallel corpus of English- and Polish-language versions of 200 EU judgments and a corpus of 200 non-translated domestic judgments. The results point to the high salience and differing patterns of use of epistemic markers in both EU and national judgments. The frequent use of high-level epistemic markers boosts the authoritativeness of judicial reasoning.Celem pracy jest ustalenie zasobu i dystrybucji czasownikowych i przysłówkowych wykładników modalności epistemicznej w angielsko- i polskojęzycznych tłumaczeniach wyroków Trybunału Sprawiedliwości UE (CJEU) i nietłumaczonych wyrokach Sądu Najwyższego RP (SN).
Affective focus increases the concordance between implicit and explicit attitudes
Two attitude dichotomies - implicit versus explicit and affect versus cognition - are presumed to be related. Following a manipulation of attitudinal focus (affective or cognitive), participants completed two implicit measures (Implicit Association Test and the Sorting Paired Features task) and three explicit attitude measures toward cats/dogs (Study 1) and gay/straight people (Study 2). Based on confirmatory factor analysis, both studies showed that explicit attitudes were more related to implicit attitudes in an affective focus than in a cognitive focus. We suggest that, although explicit evaluations can be meaningfully parsed into affective and cognitive components, implicit evaluations are more related to affective than cognitive components of attitudes
A comparative analysis of 21 literature search engines
With increasing number of bibliographic software, scientists and health professionals either make a subjective choice of tool(s) that could suit their needs or face a challenge of analyzing multiple features of a plethora of search programs. There is an urgent need for a thorough comparative analysis of the available bio-literature scanning tools, from the user’s perspective. We report results of the first time semi-quantitative comparison of 21 programs, which can search published (partial or full text) documents in life science areas. The observations can assist life science researchers and medical professionals to make an informed selection among the programs, depending on their search objectives.
Some of the important findings are:
1. Most of the hits obtained from Scopus, ReleMed, EBImed, CiteXplore, and HighWire Press were usually relevant (i.e. these tools show a better precision than other tools).
2. But a very high number of relevant citations were retrieved by HighWire Press, Google Scholar, CiteXplore and Pubmed Central (they had better recall).
3. HWP and CiteXplore seemed to have a good balance of precision and recall efficiencies.
4. PubMed Central, PubMed and Scopus provided the most useful query systems.
5. GoPubMed, BioAsk, EBIMed, ClusterMed could be more useful among the tools that can automatically process the retrieved citations for further scanning of bio-entities such as proteins, diseases, tissues, molecular interactions, etc.
The authors suggest the use of PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and HighWire Press - for better coverage, and GoPubMed - to view the hits categorized based on the MeSH and gene ontology terms. The article is relavant to all life science subjects.

Building Comparative Product Relation Maps by Mining Consumer Opinions on the Web
With the Web 2.0 paradigm, users play the active roles in producing Web contents at online forums, wiki, blogs, social networks, etc. Among these users contributed contents, many of them are opinions about products, services, or political issues. Accordingly, extracting the comparative relations about products or services by means of opinion mining techniques could generate significant business values. From the producers’ perspective, they could better understand the relative strength or weakness of their products, and hence developing better products to meet the consumers’ requirements. From the consumers’ perspective, they could exercise more informed purchasing decisions by comparing the various features of certain kind of products. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a novel Support Vector Machine (SVM) based comparative relation map generation method for automatic product features analysis based on the sheer volume of consumer opinions posted on the Web. The proposed method has been empirically evaluated based on the consumer opinions crawled from the Web recently. Our initial experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is promising, and the precision can achieve 73.15%
Identifying Relationships Among Sentences in Court Case Transcripts Using Discourse Relations
Case Law has a significant impact on the proceedings of legal cases.
Therefore, the information that can be obtained from previous court cases is
valuable to lawyers and other legal officials when performing their duties.
This paper describes a methodology of applying discourse relations between
sentences when processing text documents related to the legal domain. In this
study, we developed a mechanism to classify the relationships that can be
observed among sentences in transcripts of United States court cases. First, we
defined relationship types that can be observed between sentences in court case
transcripts. Then we classified pairs of sentences according to the
relationship type by combining a machine learning model and a rule-based
approach. The results obtained through our system were evaluated using human
judges. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where discourse
relationships between sentences have been used to determine relationships among
sentences in legal court case transcripts.Comment: Conference: 2018 International Conference on Advances in ICT for

LOGICAL ANALYSIS AND LATER MOHIST LOGIC: SOME COMPARATIVE REFLECTIONS [abstract]
Any philosophical method that treats the analysis of the meaning of a sentence or expression in terms of a decomposition into a set of conceptually basic constituent parts must do some theoretical work to explain the puzzles of intensionality. This is because intensional phenomena appear to violate the principle of compositionality, and the assumption of compositionality is the principal justification for thinking that an analysis will reveal the real semantical import of a sentence or expression through a method of decomposition. Accordingly, a natural strategy for dealing with intensionality is to argue that it is really just an isolable, aberrant class of linguistic phenomena that poses no general threat to the thesis that meaning is basically compositional. On the other hand, the later Mohists give us good reason to reject this view. What we learn from them is that there may be basic limitations in any analytical technique that presupposes that meaning is perspicuously represented only when it has been fully decomposed into its constituent parts. The purpose of this paper is to (a) explain why the Mohists found the issue of intensionality to be so important in their investigations of language, and (b) defend the view that Mohist insights reveal basic limitations in any technique of analysis that is uncritically applied with a decompositional approach in mind, as are those that are often pursued in the West in the context of more general epistemological and metaphysical programs
