    An Improved Multi-Hop-Enabled Energy Efficient MAC Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

    Packet collisions occurred by hidden and local nodes in multi-hop enabled underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) have effect on throughput, energy efficiency and end-to-end delay. Existing Multi-HopEnabled Energy Efficient MAC Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (MHEE MAC) utilized a double-phase contention resolution mechanism, which causes visit multiple time slot and energy overhead. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol that use contention resolution mechanism with unique priority to provide energy efficiency. First, local nodes are eliminated comparing their priority and later, hidden nodes are mitigated. A simulation of proposed protocol is also developed to analyze the performance. Results obtained through simulation show that the proposed protocol achieves significantly lower energy consumption, reserve more energy and more stable throughput compared to MHEE-MAC, T-Lohi and slotted floor acquisition multiple access (S-FAMA)

    A Multilevel Scheduling MAC Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks(UASN)

    Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) have attracted great attention in recent years and utilizes as a part of oceanic applications. This network has to deal with propagation delay, energy constraints and limited bandwidth which are strenuous for designing a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for underwater communication. There also exists an idle channel listening and overhearing problem which sets down the energy into starvation in the contention-based MAC protocols. Alternatively, lengthy time slots and time synchronization equated by schedule-based MAC protocols, outcomes the variable transmission delay and degrades the network performances. To iron out these problems, we propose a cluster-based MAC protocol, tagged as Multilevel Scheduling MAC (MLS-MAC) protocol for UASN in the paper. The cluster head is a decision maker for packet transmission and aids to inflate the lifetime of sensor nodes. To reinforce the channel efficiency, the multilevel scheduling in data phase is initiated with two queues depending on the applications fixed by the cluster head. The simulation result shows that the MLS-MAC has increased the network throughput and has decreased energy consumption

    Energy Efficient Reconfigurable MAC Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network

    In a multi-hop Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network~(UWASN) the challenges of the medium access control~(MAC) are different than that of single hop fully connected network. Existing MAC solutions try to solve the challenges of MAC control by channel reservation or contention elimination techniques. These techniques heavily depend on the transmissions of control packets that result in large overhead specially in terms of energy consumptions. In this thesis, a multi-hop enabled energy efficient MAC protocol for UWASN is proposed by exploiting a novel 2-phase contention resolution technique that minimizes the usage of control packets by utilizing short duration tones.~A probabilistic model of the proposed protocol is also developed to analyze the performance of the protocol analytically. A network simulation framework has been designed to simulate MAC and a physical layer for UWASN.~The proposed MAC protocol has been evaluated through quantitative analysis and simulation. By evaluating this proposed protocol through quantitative analysis and simulation, this research found that the proposed protocol outperforms in terms of energy efficiency, channel utilization and end-to-end delay. The proposed protocol achieves stable throughput and a maximum 30\% of theoretical maximum channel utilization in high traffic load in comparison to the existing protocol that becomes unstable and does not perform well. Additionally, the proposed protocol achieves better energy efficiency and lower end-to-end delay

    Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UWASNs) play an important role in monitoring the aqueous environment which has created a lot of interest for researchers and scientists. Utilization of underwater acoustic sensor node (UASN) scheduling for transmission remains, due to the limited acoustic bandwidth available, a challenge in such an environment. One of the methods to overcome this problem is to efficiently schedule UASN data using time division multiple access (TDMA) protocols the parallel transmissions, simultaneously avoiding interference. The paper shows how to optimize the utilization of acoustic sensor node bandwidth by maximizing the possible node transmissions in the TDMA frame and also by minimizing the node's turnaround wait time for its subsequent transmissions by using an evolutionary memetic algorithm (MA). The simulation of MA-TDMA proves that as the size of the network increases, every node in UWASN transmits with an average minimal turnaround transmission time. It also proves that as the TDMA cycle repeats, the overall network throughput gets maximized by increasing the possible node transmissions in the MA-TDMA frame

    Wireless sensor networks monitor dynamic environments that change rapidly over time. This dynamic behavior is either caused by external factors or initiated by the system designers themselves. To adapt to such conditions, sensor networks often adopt machine learning techniques to eliminate the need for unnecessary redesign. Machine learning also inspires many practical solutions that maximize resource utilization and prolong the lifespan of the network. In this paper, we present an extensive literature review over the period 2002-2013 of machine learning methods that were used to address common issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The advantages and disadvantages of each proposed algorithm are evaluated against the corresponding problem.     A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
