Solving the 3d Ising Model with the Conformal Bootstrap II. c-Minimization and Precise Critical Exponents
We use the conformal bootstrap to perform a precision study of the operator
spectrum of the critical 3d Ising model. We conjecture that the 3d Ising
spectrum minimizes the central charge c in the space of unitary solutions to
crossing symmetry. Because extremal solutions to crossing symmetry are uniquely
determined, we are able to precisely reconstruct the first several Z2-even
operator dimensions and their OPE coefficients. We observe that a sharp
transition in the operator spectrum occurs at the 3d Ising dimension
Delta_sigma=0.518154(15), and find strong numerical evidence that operators
decouple from the spectrum as one approaches the 3d Ising point. We compare
this behavior to the analogous situation in 2d, where the disappearance of
operators can be understood in terms of degenerate Virasoro representations.Comment: 55 pages, many figures; v2 - refs and comments added, to appear in a

The free energy principle induces neuromorphic development
We show how any finite physical system with morphological, i.e. three-dimensional embedding or shape, degrees of freedom and locally limited free energy will, under the constraints of the free energy principle, evolve over time towards a neuromorphic morphology that supports hierarchical computations in which each âlevelâ of the hierarchy enacts a coarse-graining of its inputs, and dually, a fine-graining of its outputs. Such hierarchies occur throughout biology, from the architectures of intracellular signal transduction pathways to the large-scale organization of perception and action cycles in the mammalian brain. The close formal connections between cone-cocone diagrams (CCCD) as models of quantum reference frames on the one hand, and between CCCDs and topological quantum field theories on the other, allow the representation of such computations in the fully-general quantum-computational framework of topological quantum neural networks
Constrained parameterization with applications to graphics and image processing.
Surface parameterization is to establish a transformation that maps the points on a surface to a specified parametric domain. It has been widely applied to computer graphics and image processing fields. The challenging issue is that the usual positional constraints always result in triangle flipping in parameterizations (also called foldovers). Additionally, distortion is inevitable in parameterizations. Thus the rigid constraint is always taken into account. In general, the constraints are application-dependent. This thesis thus focuses on the various constraints depended on applications and investigates the foldover-free constrained parameterization approaches individually. Such constraints usually include, simple positional constraints, tradeoff of positional constraints and rigid constraint, and rigid constraint. From the perspective of applications, we aim at the foldover-free parameterization methods with positional constraints, the as-rigid-as-possible parameterization with positional constraints, and the well-shaped well-spaced pre-processing procedure for low-distortion parameterizations in this thesis. The first contribution of this thesis is the development of a RBF-based re-parameterization algorithm for the application of the foldover-free constrained texture mapping. The basic idea is to split the usual parameterization procedure into two steps, 2D parameterization with the constraints of convex boundaries and 2D re-parameterization with the interior positional constraints. Moreover, we further extend the 2D re-parameterization approach with the interior positional constraints to high dimensional datasets, such as, volume data and polyhedrons. The second contribution is the development of a vector field based deformation algorithm for 2D mesh deformation and image warping. Many presented deformation approaches are used to employ the basis functions (including our proposed RBF-based re-parameterization algorithm here). The main problem is that such algorithms have infinite support, that is, any local deformation always leads to small changes over the whole domain. Our presented vector field based algorithm can effectively carry on the local deformation while reducing distortion as much as possible. The third contribution is the development of a pre-processing for surface parameterization. Except the developable surfaces, the current parameterization approaches inevitably incur large distortion. To reduce distortion, we proposed a pre-processing procedure in this thesis, including mesh partition and mesh smoothing. As a result, the resulting meshes are partitioned into a set of small patches with rectangle-like boundaries. Moreover, they are well-shaped and well-spaced. This pre-processing procedure can evidently improve the quality of meshes for low-distortion parameterizations
The Conformal Bootstrap: Theory, Numerical Techniques, and Applications
Conformal field theories have been long known to describe the fascinating
universal physics of scale invariant critical points. They describe continuous
phase transitions in fluids, magnets, and numerous other materials, while at
the same time sit at the heart of our modern understanding of quantum field
theory. For decades it has been a dream to study these intricate strongly
coupled theories nonperturbatively using symmetries and other consistency
conditions. This idea, called the conformal bootstrap, saw some successes in
two dimensions but it is only in the last ten years that it has been fully
realized in three, four, and other dimensions of interest. This renaissance has
been possible both due to significant analytical progress in understanding how
to set up the bootstrap equations and the development of numerical techniques
for finding or constraining their solutions. These developments have led to a
number of groundbreaking results, including world record determinations of
critical exponents and correlation function coefficients in the Ising and
models in three dimensions. This article will review these exciting
developments for newcomers to the bootstrap, giving an introduction to
conformal field theories and the theory of conformal blocks, describing
numerical techniques for the bootstrap based on convex optimization, and
summarizing in detail their applications to fixed points in three and four

Deformable and articulated 3D reconstruction from monocular video sequences
PhDThis thesis addresses the problem of deformable and articulated structure from motion from
monocular uncalibrated video sequences. Structure from motion is defined as the problem of
recovering information about the 3D structure of scenes imaged by a camera in a video sequence.
Our study aims at the challenging problem of non-rigid shapes (e.g. a beating heart or a smiling
face). Non-rigid structures appear constantly in our everyday life, think of a bicep curling, a
torso twisting or a smiling face. Our research seeks a general method to perform 3D shape
recovery purely from data, without having to rely on a pre-computed model or training data.
Open problems in the field are the difficulty of the non-linear estimation, the lack of a real-time
system, large amounts of missing data in real-world video sequences, measurement noise and
strong deformations. Solving these problems would take us far beyond the current state of the
art in non-rigid structure from motion. This dissertation presents our contributions in the field
of non-rigid structure from motion, detailing a novel algorithm that enforces the exact metric
structure of the problem at each step of the minimisation by projecting the motion matrices
onto the correct deformable or articulated metric motion manifolds respectively. An important
advantage of this new algorithm is its ability to handle missing data which becomes crucial
when dealing with real video sequences. We present a generic bilinear estimation framework,
which improves convergence and makes use of the manifold constraints. Finally, we demonstrate
a sequential, frame-by-frame estimation algorithm, which provides a 3D model and camera
parameters for each video frame, while simultaneously building a model of object deformation
The N=2 superconformal bootstrap
In this work we initiate the conformal bootstrap program for N=2N=2 super-conformal field theories in four dimensions. We promote an abstract operator-algebraic viewpoint in order to unify the description of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories, and formulate various conjectures concerning the landscape of theories. We analyze in detail the four-point functions of flavor symmetry current multiplets and of N=2N=2 chiral operators. For both correlation functions we review the solution of the superconformal Ward identities and describe their superconformal block decompositions. This provides the foundation for an extensive numerical analysis discussed in the second half of the paper. We find a large number of constraints for operator dimensions, OPE coefficients, and central charges that must hold for any N=2N=2 superconformal field theory
