    Data analytics for smart parking applications

    We consider real-life smart parking systems where parking lot occupancy data are collected from field sensor devices and sent to backend servers for further processing and usage for applications. Our objective is to make these data useful to end users, such as parking managers, and, ultimately, to citizens. To this end, we concoct and validate an automated classification algorithm having two objectives: (1) outlier detection: to detect sensors with anomalous behavioral patterns, i.e., outliers; and (2) clustering: to group the parking sensors exhibiting similar patterns into distinct clusters. We first analyze the statistics of real parking data, obtaining suitable simulation models for parking traces. We then consider a simple classification algorithm based on the empirical complementary distribution function of occupancy times and show its limitations. Hence, we design a more sophisticated algorithm exploiting unsupervised learning techniques (self-organizing maps). These are tuned following a supervised approach using our trace generator and are compared against other clustering schemes, namely expectation maximization, k-means clustering and DBSCAN, considering six months of data from a real sensor deployment. Our approach is found to be superior in terms of classification accuracy, while also being capable of identifying all of the outliers in the dataset

    A Dynamic Information-Based Parking Guidance for Megacities considering Both Public and Private Parking

    The constantly increasing number of cars in the megacities is causing severe parking problems. To resolve this problem, many cities adopt parking guidance system as a part of intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, the current parking guidance system stays in its infant stage since the obtainable information is limited. To enhance parking management in the megacity and to provide better parking guidance to drivers, this study introduces an intelligent parking guidance system and proposes a new methodology to operate it. The introduced system considers both public parking and private parking so that it is designed to maximize the use of spatial resources of the city. The proposed methodology is based on the dynamic information related parking in the city and suggests the best parking space to each driver. To do this, two kinds of utility functions which assess parking spaces are developed. Using the proposed methodology, different types of parking management policies are tested through the simulation. According to the experimental test, it is shown that the centrally managed parking guidance can give better results than individually preferred parking guidance. The simulation test proves that both a driver???s benefits and parking management of a city from various points of view can be improved by using the proposed methodology

    PREDICTION OF PARKING ACCUMULATION FOR DIFFERENT LAND USES IN ABU DHABI CITY FROM AN EXISTING SURVEY

    Parking accumulation profiles are time-dependent quantities at car parks that need data from longitudinal observational surveys. Car parks can be grouped into clusters based on the similarity in the shape of their accumulation profiles. This study investigates factors affecting parking accumulation and attempts to devise a methodology to construct parking accumulation profiles for different land uses in Abu Dhabi city. The study uses data available from Dubai city, which has a similar land-use type and distribution pattern as Abu Dhabi. A snapshot survey was conducted to observe the portion of the sampled car parks to calibrate the predicted parking accumulation. The estimation of parking accumulation profiles based on different land uses in Abu Dhabi city was done using the planning of the survey conducted in Dubai. The results suggest that a preliminary parking survey can help determine the initial accumulation profile and predict a robust parking accumulation profile that is applicable across different land-use types in Abu Dhabi

    Process Mining Contributions to Discrete-event Simulation Modelling

    Background: Over the last 20 years, process mining has become a vibrant research area due to the advances in data management technologies and techniques and the advent of new process mining tools. Recently, the links between process mining and simulation modelling have become an area of interest. Objectives: The objective of the paper was to demonstrate and assess the role of process mining results as an input for discrete-event simulation modelling, using two different datasets, one of which is considered data-poor while the other one data-rich. Methods/Approach: Statistical calculations and process maps were prepared and presented based on the event log data from two case studies (smart mobility and higher education) using a process mining tool. Then, the implications of the results across the building blocks (entities, activities, control-flows, and resources) of simulation modelling are discussed. Results: Apart from providing a rationale and the framework for simulation that is more efficient modelling based on process mining results, the paper provides contributions in the two case studies by deliberating and identifying potential research topics that could be tackled and supported by the new combined approach. Conclusions: Event logs and process mining provide valuable information and techniques that could be a useful input for simulation modelling, especially in the first steps of building discrete-event models, but also for validation purposes

    Sensor Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems

    Modern society faces serious problems with transportation systems, including but not limited to traffic congestion, safety, and pollution. Information communication technologies have gained increasing attention and importance in modern transportation systems. Automotive manufacturers are developing in-vehicle sensors and their applications in different areas including safety, traffic management, and infotainment. Government institutions are implementing roadside infrastructures such as cameras and sensors to collect data about environmental and traffic conditions. By seamlessly integrating vehicles and sensing devices, their sensing and communication capabilities can be leveraged to achieve smart and intelligent transportation systems. We discuss how sensor technology can be integrated with the transportation infrastructure to achieve a sustainable Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and how safety, traffic control and infotainment applications can benefit from multiple sensors deployed in different elements of an ITS. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed to enable a fully operational and cooperative ITS environment

    Survey of smart parking systems

    The large number of vehicles constantly seeking access to congested areas in cities means that finding a public parking place is often difficult and causes problems for drivers and citizens alike. In this context, strategies that guide vehicles from one point to another, looking for the most optimal path, are needed. Most contributions in the literature are routing strategies that take into account different criteria to select the optimal route required to find a parking space. This paper aims to identify the types of smart parking systems (SPS) that are available today, as well as investigate the kinds of vehicle detection techniques (VDT) they have and the algorithms or other methods they employ, in order to analyze where the development of these systems is at today. To do this, a survey of 274 publications from January 2012 to December 2019 was conducted. The survey considered four principal features: SPS types reported in the literature, the kinds of VDT used in these SPS, the algorithms or methods they implement, and the stage of development at which they are. Based on a search and extraction of results methodology, this work was able to effectively obtain the current state of the research area. In addition, the exhaustive study of the studies analyzed allowed for a discussion to be established concerning the main difficulties, as well as the gaps and open problems detected for the SPS.
