    A core ontology for business process analysis

    Business Process Management (BPM) aims at supporting the whole life-cycle necessary to deploy and maintain business processes in organisations. An important step of the BPM life-cycle is the analysis of the processes deployed in companies. However, the degree of automation currently achieved cannot support the level of adaptation required by businesses. Initial steps have been performed towards including some sort of automated reasoning within Business Process Analysis (BPA) but this is typically limited to using taxonomies. We present a core ontology aimed at enhancing the state of the art in BPA. The ontology builds upon a Time Ontology and is structured around the process, resource, and object perspectives as typically adopted when analysing business processes. The ontology has been extended and validated by means of an Events Ontology and an Events Analysis Ontology aimed at capturing the audit trails generated by Process-Aware Information Systems and deriving additional knowledge

The method of this research is data capturing, literature review, object oriented analysis and design and Rational Unified process including UML ( Unified Modeling Language) for application design. Based on the problem, we designed a web based and sms gateway application to support Sales and Distribution module ERP SAP R/3 to help customer and sales person in doing sales transaction and information inquiry

    EXPLORING A DOMAIN ONTOLOGY BASED APPROACH TO BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN

    Business process modeling is a critical area of business application as business processes increase in complexity and become more automated. However, little attention has been paid to the fact that business process modelers often misunderstand domain concepts or relationships due to a lack of precise domain knowledge. This semantic ambiguity problem often affects the efficiency and quality of business process modeling. To address this problem, we propose a domain ontology based approach (DOBA) to supporting business process design by capturing domain semantics with a meta model of process ontologies. DOBA provides a means to capture rich, semantic information on complex business processes, which enables the incorporation of domain specific ontologies to facilitate modeling of business processes. The validity of DOBA is demonstrated via a business case in electronic auctions. The DOBA approach represents a first step towards developing a formal methodology for ontology-based modeling and analysis in business process management

    Understanding the bi-directional relationship between analytical processes and interactive visualization systems

    Interactive visualizations leverage the human visual and reasoning systems to increase the scale of information with which we can effectively work, therefore improving our ability to explore and analyze large amounts of data. Interactive visualizations are often designed with target domains in mind, such as analyzing unstructured textual information, which is a main thrust in this dissertation. Since each domain has its own existing procedures of analyzing data, a good start to a well-designed interactive visualization system is to understand the domain experts' workflow and analysis processes. This dissertation recasts the importance of understanding domain users' analysis processes and incorporating such understanding into the design of interactive visualization systems. To meet this aim, I first introduce considerations guiding the gathering of general and domain-specific analysis processes in text analytics. Two interactive visualization systems are designed by following the considerations. The first system is Parallel-Topics, a visual analytics system supporting analysis of large collections of documents by extracting semantically meaningful topics. Based on lessons learned from Parallel-Topics, this dissertation further presents a general visual text analysis framework, I-Si, to present meaningful topical summaries and temporal patterns, with the capability to handle large-scale textual information. Both systems have been evaluated by expert users and deemed successful in addressing domain analysis needs. The second contribution lies in preserving domain users' analysis process while using interactive visualizations. Our research suggests the preservation could serve multiple purposes. On the one hand, it could further improve the current system. On the other hand, users often need help in recalling and revisiting their complex and sometimes iterative analysis process with an interactive visualization system. This dissertation introduces multiple types of evidences available for capturing a user's analysis process within an interactive visualization and analyzes cost/benefit ratios of the capturing methods. It concludes that tracking interaction sequences is the most un-intrusive and feasible way to capture part of a user's analysis process. To validate this claim, a user study is presented to theoretically analyze the relationship between interactions and problem-solving processes. The results indicate that constraining the way a user interacts with a mathematical puzzle does have an effect on the problemsolving process. As later evidenced in an evaluative study, a fair amount of high-level analysis can be recovered through merely analyzing interaction logs

    Analysis of Alternatives: Multivariate Considerations

    The Aeronautical System Center (ASC) is developing a Simulation and Analysis Facility (SIMAF) that will link models, simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, and system-in-the-loop resources to create a robust virtual environment supporting assessment of alternate systems in the defense acquisition process. ENS is assisting ASC with scenario development, experimental design, and battleroom visualization efforts for a SIMAF capability demonstration. This thesis uses multivariate analysis and visualization tools to develop an approach for reducing the dimensionality of multiple campaign level measures of effectiveness for a notional Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) study. Additionally, the thesis advances an AoA visualization paradigm for the SIMAF capability demonstration. The results of this study suggest that multivariate data reduction techniques and user interactive visualization of multivariate analysis results can be employed to combine multiple MOEs into a reduced set of interpretable factors capturing the operational effectiveness performance of competing acquisition alternatives. The thesis research also successfully demonstrated a visual data mining approach applied to the visualization of campaign level analysis results and the cost/effectiveness integration of an AoA effort
