    Knowledge restructing and the development of expertise in computer programming

    This thesis reports a number of empirical studies exploring the development of expertise in computer programming. Experiments 1 and 2 are concerned with the way in which the possession of design experience can influence the perception and use of cues to various program structures. Experiment 3 examines how violations to standard conventions for constructing programs can affect the comprehension of expert, intermediate and novice subjects. Experiment 4 looks at the differences in strategy that are exhibited by subjects of varying skill level when constructing programs in different languages. Experiment 5 takes these ideas further to examine the temporal distribution of different forms of strategy during a program generation task. Experiment 6 provides evidence for salient cognitive structures derived from reaction time and error data in the context of a recognition task. Experiments 7 and 8 are concerned with the role of working memory in program generation and suggest that one aspect of expertise in the programming domain involves the acquisition of strategies for utilising display-based information. The final chapter attempts to bring these experimental findings together in terms of a model of knowledge organisation that stresses the importance of knowledge restructuring processes in the development of expertise. This is contrasted with existing models which have tended to place emphasis upon schemata acquisition and generalisation as the fundamental modes of learning associated with skill development. The work reported here suggests that a fine-grained restructuring of individual schemata takes places during the later stages of skill development. It is argued that those mechanisms currently thought to be associated with the development of expertise may not fully account for the strategic changes and the types of error typically found in the transition between novice, intermediate and expert problem solvers. This work has a number of implications for existing theories of skill acquisition. In particular, it questions the ability of such theories to account for subtle changes in the various manifestations of skilled performance that are associated with increasing expertise. Secondly, the work reported in this thesis attempts to show how specific forms of training might give rise to the knowledge restructuring process that is proposed. Finally, the thesis stresses the important role of display-based problem solving in complex tasks such as programming and highlights the role of programming language notation as a mediating factor in the development and acquisition of problem solving strategies

    A development platform is a standalone electronic system, suited with open hardware and software, governed by a microprocessor or a microcontroller. The flexibility and adaptability encourages the spread of these systems in a wide range of applications, by different level designers. The platform is aimed to provide the enough software and hardware features for these projects. Though, additional circuitry and subsystems can be connected enhancing the capability of the electronic prototyping platform. The core objective of this thesis work is the design and implementation of a communication interface over a BeagleBone Black (BBB) development platform, named as BeagleBone Black Communication Interface (CI-BBB). The scope of the resulted device, is the data acquisition system (DAQ) of the Microrobotic Platform (MP) of FIBAM project, developed by the Micro- and Nanosystems Research Group, of Tampere University of Technology. For that purpose the work is divided in two main areas. In first place, the necessary electronic circuits for signal adapting, which is built on a printed circuit board (PCB) and connected to the BBB. And the control software, which includes a function library and a remote control program. The final device results in a standalone system that comprises the hardware and software in a small area. Performance measurements are made to characterize the features of the CI-BBB and the integration within the MP. The platform presents the capacity to acquire data, from analogue sources and I2C bus communication system, and provide the fetched samples in a file. The remote control provides a communication line with the system, ensuring the integration of the CI-BBB in the MP and avoiding the introduction of additional elements in the overall system

    A framework for the application of network telescope sensors in a global IP network

    The use of Network Telescope systems has become increasingly popular amongst security researchers in recent years. This study provides a framework for the utilisation of this data. The research is based on a primary dataset of 40 million events spanning 50 months collected using a small (/24) passive network telescope located in African IP space. This research presents a number of differing ways in which the data can be analysed ranging from low level protocol based analysis to higher level analysis at the geopolitical and network topology level. Anomalous traffic and illustrative anecdotes are explored in detail and highlighted. A discussion relating to bogon traffic observed is also presented. Two novel visualisation tools are presented, which were developed to aid in the analysis of large network telescope datasets. The first is a three-dimensional visualisation tool which allows for live, near-realtime analysis, and the second is a two-dimensional fractal based plotting scheme which allows for plots of the entire IPv4 address space to be produced, and manipulated. Using the techniques and tools developed for the analysis of this dataset, a detailed analysis of traffic recorded as destined for port 445/tcp is presented. This includes the evaluation of traffic surrounding the outbreak of the Conficker worm in November 2008. A number of metrics relating to the description and quantification of network telescope configuration and the resultant traffic captures are described, the use of which it is hoped will facilitate greater and easier collaboration among researchers utilising this network security technology. The research concludes with suggestions relating to other applications of the data and intelligence that can be extracted from network telescopes, and their use as part of an organisation’s integrated network security system
