    Classification of traffic over collaborative IoT and Cloud platforms using deep learning recurrent LSTM

    Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud based collaborative platforms are emerging as new infrastructures during recent decades. The classification of network traffic in terms of benign and malevolent traffic is indispensable for IoT-cloud based collaborative platforms to utilize the channel capacity optimally for transmitting the benign traffic and to block the malicious traffic. The traffic classification mechanism should be dynamic and capable enough to classify the network traffic in a quick manner, so that the malevolent traffic can be identified in earlier stages and benign traffic can be channelized to the destined nodes speedily. In this paper, we are presenting deep learning recurrent LSTM based technique to classify the traffic over IoT-cloud platforms. Machine learning techniques (MLTs) have also been employed for comparison of the performance of these techniques with the proposed LSTM RNet classification method. In the proposed research work, network traffic is classified into three classes namely Tor-Normal, NonTor-Normal and NonTor-Malicious traffic. The research outcome shows that the proposed LSTM RNet classify the traffic accurately and also helps in reducing the network latency and in enhancing the data transmission rate as well as network throughput

    Deep neural networks in the cloud: Review, applications, challenges and research directions

    Deep neural networks (DNNs) are currently being deployed as machine learning technology in a wide range of important real-world applications. DNNs consist of a huge number of parameters that require millions of floating-point operations (FLOPs) to be executed both in learning and prediction modes. A more effective method is to implement DNNs in a cloud computing system equipped with centralized servers and data storage sub-systems with high-speed and high-performance computing capabilities. This paper presents an up-to-date survey on current state-of-the-art deployed DNNs for cloud computing. Various DNN complexities associated with different architectures are presented and discussed alongside the necessities of using cloud computing. We also present an extensive overview of different cloud computing platforms for the deployment of DNNs and discuss them in detail. Moreover, DNN applications already deployed in cloud computing systems are reviewed to demonstrate the advantages of using cloud computing for DNNs.     Deepint.net: A rapid deployment platform for smart territories

    This paper presents an efficient cyberphysical platform for the smart management of smart territories. It is efficient because it facilitates the implementation of data acquisition and data management methods, as well as data representation and dashboard configuration. The platform allows for the use of any type of data source, ranging from the measurements of a multi-functional IoT sensing devices to relational and non-relational databases. It is also smart because it incorporates a complete artificial intelligence suit for data analysis; it includes techniques for data classification, clustering, forecasting, optimization, visualization, etc. It is also compatible with the edge computing concept, allowing for the distribution of intelligence and the use of intelligent sensors. The concept of smart cities is evolving and adapting to new applications; the trend to create intelligent neighbourhoods, districts or territories is becoming increasingly popular, as opposed to the previous approach of managing an entire megacity. In this paper, the platform is presented, and its architecture and functionalities are described. Moreover, its operation has been validated in a case study where the bike renting service of Paris—Vélib’ Métropole has been managed. This platform could enable smart territories to develop adapted knowledge management systems, adapt them to new requirements and to use multiple types of data, and execute efficient computational and artificial intelligence algorithms.     Deep Learning for Safe Autonomous Driving: Current Challenges and Future Directions

    [EN] Advances in information and signal processing technologies have a significant impact on autonomous driving (AD), improving driving safety while minimizing the efforts of human drivers with the help of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Recently, deep learning (DL) approaches have solved several real-world problems of complex nature. However, their strengths in terms of control processes for AD have not been deeply investigated and highlighted yet. This survey highlights the power of DL architectures in terms of reliability and efficient real-time performance and overviews state-of-the-art strategies for safe AD, with their major achievements and limitations. Furthermore, it covers major embodiments of DL along the AD pipeline including measurement, analysis, and execution, with a focus on road, lane, vehicle, pedestrian, drowsiness detection, collision avoidance, and traffic sign detection through sensing and vision-based DL methods. In addition, we discuss on the performance of several reviewed methods by using different evaluation metrics, with critics on their pros and cons.     Air pollution prediction with multi-modal data and deep neural networks

    Air pollution is becoming a rising and serious environmental problem, especially in urban areas affected by an increasing migration rate. The large availability of sensor data enables the adoption of analytical tools to provide decision support capabilities. Employing sensors facilitates air pollution monitoring, but the lack of predictive capability limits such systems’ potential in practical scenarios. On the other hand, forecasting methods offer the opportunity to predict the future pollution in specific areas, potentially suggesting useful preventive measures. To date, many works tackled the problem of air pollution forecasting, most of which are based on sequence models. These models are trained with raw pollution data and are subsequently utilized to make predictions. This paper proposes a novel approach evaluating four different architectures that utilize camera images to estimate the air pollution in those areas. These images are further enhanced with weather data to boost the classification accuracy. The proposed approach exploits generative adversarial networks combined with data augmentation techniques to mitigate the class imbalance problem. The experiments show that the proposed method achieves robust accuracy of up to 0.88, which is comparable to sequence models and conventional models that utilize air pollution data. This is a remarkable result considering that the historic air pollution data is directly related to the output—future air pollution data, whereas the proposed architecture uses camera images to recognize the air pollution—which is an inherently much more difficult problem

    Federated Learning for Medical Applications: A Taxonomy, Current Trends, Challenges, and Future Research Directions

    With the advent of the IoT, AI, ML, and DL algorithms, the landscape of data-driven medical applications has emerged as a promising avenue for designing robust and scalable diagnostic and prognostic models from medical data. This has gained a lot of attention from both academia and industry, leading to significant improvements in healthcare quality. However, the adoption of AI-driven medical applications still faces tough challenges, including meeting security, privacy, and quality of service (QoS) standards. Recent developments in \ac{FL} have made it possible to train complex machine-learned models in a distributed manner and have become an active research domain, particularly processing the medical data at the edge of the network in a decentralized way to preserve privacy and address security concerns. To this end, in this paper, we explore the present and future of FL technology in medical applications where data sharing is a significant challenge. We delve into the current research trends and their outcomes, unravelling the complexities of designing reliable and scalable \ac{FL} models. Our paper outlines the fundamental statistical issues in FL, tackles device-related problems, addresses security challenges, and navigates the complexity of privacy concerns, all while highlighting its transformative potential in the medical field. Our study primarily focuses on medical applications of \ac{FL}, particularly in the context of global cancer diagnosis. We highlight the potential of FL to enable computer-aided diagnosis tools that address this challenge with greater effectiveness than traditional data-driven methods.     Intelligent Embedded Vision for Summarization of Multi-View Videos in IIoT

    Nowadays, video sensors are used on a large scale for various applications including security monitoring and smart transportation. However, the limited communication bandwidth and storage constraints make it challenging to process such heterogeneous nature of Big Data in real time. Multi-view video summarization (MVS) enables us to suppress redundant data in distributed video sensors settings. The existing MVS approaches process video data in offline manner by transmitting it to the local or cloud server for analysis, which requires extra streaming to conduct summarization, huge bandwidth, and are not applicable for integration with industrial internet of things (IIoT). This paper presents a light-weight CNN and IIoT based computationally intelligent (CI) MVS framework. Our method uses an IIoT network containing smart devices, Raspberry Pi (clients and master) with embedded cameras to capture multi-view video (MVV) data. Each client Raspberry Pi (RPi) detects target in frames via light-weight CNN model, analyzes these targets for traffic and crowd density, and searches for suspicious objects to generate alert in the IIoT network. The frames of each client RPi are encoded and transmitted with approximately 17.02% smaller size of each frame to master RPi for final MVS. Empirical analysis shows that our proposed framework can be used in industrial environments for various applications such as security and smart transportation and can be proved beneficial for saving resources

    Connected healthcare: Improving patient care using digital health technologies

    Now more than ever, traditional healthcare models are being overhauled with digital technologies of Healthcare 4.0 being increasingly adopted. Worldwide, digital devices are improving every stage of the patient care pathway. For one, sensors are being used to monitor patient metrics 24/7, permitting swift diagnosis and interventions. At the treatment stage, 3D printers are currently being investigated for the concept of personalised medicine by allowing patients access to on-demand, customisable therapeutics. Robots are also being explored for treatment, by empowering precision surgery or targeted drug delivery. Within medical logistics, drones are being leveraged to deliver critical treatments to remote areas, collect samples, and even provide emergency aid. To enable seamless integration within healthcare, the Internet of Things technology is being exploited to form closed-loop systems that remotely communicate with one another.
