    A silicon implementation of the fly's optomotor control system

    Flies are capable of stabilizing their body during free flight by using visual motion information to estimate self-rotation. We have built a hardware model of this optomotor control system in a standard CMOS VLSI process. The result is a small, low-power chip that receives input directly from the real world through on-board photoreceptors and generates motor commands in real time. The chip was tested under closed-loop conditions typically used for insect studies. The silicon system exhibited stable control sufficiently analogous to the biological system to allow for quantitative comparisons

    System Identification, Diagnosis, and Built-In Self-Test of High Switching Frequency DC-DC Converters

    abstract: Complex electronic systems include multiple power domains and drastically varying dynamic power consumption patterns, requiring the use of multiple power conversion and regulation units. High frequency switching converters have been gaining prominence in the DC-DC converter market due to smaller solution size (higher power density) and higher efficiency. As the filter components become smaller in value and size, they are unfortunately also subject to higher process variations and worse degradation profiles jeopardizing stable operation of the power supply. This dissertation presents techniques to track changes in the dynamic loop characteristics of the DC-DC converters without disturbing the normal mode of operation. A digital pseudo-noise (PN) based stimulus is used to excite the DC-DC system at various circuit nodes to calculate the corresponding closed-loop impulse response. The test signal energy is spread over a wide bandwidth and the signal analysis is achieved by correlating the PN input sequence with the disturbed output generated, thereby accumulating the desired behavior over time. A mixed-signal cross-correlation circuit is used to derive on-chip impulse responses, with smaller memory and lower computational requirement in comparison to a digital correlator approach. Model reference based parametric and non-parametric techniques are discussed to analyze the impulse response results in both time and frequency domain. The proposed techniques can extract open-loop phase margin and closed-loop unity-gain frequency within 5.2% and 4.1% error, respectively, for the load current range of 30-200mA. Converter parameters such as natural frequency (ω_n ), quality factor (Q), and center frequency (ω_c ) can be estimated within 3.6%, 4.7%, and 3.8% error respectively, over load inductance of 4.7-10.3µH, and filter capacitance of 200-400nF. A 5-MHz switching frequency, 5-8.125V input voltage range, voltage-mode controlled DC-DC buck converter is designed for the proposed built-in self-test (BIST) analysis. The converter output voltage range is 3.3-5V and the supported maximum load current is 450mA. The peak efficiency of the converter is 87.93%. The proposed converter is fabricated on a 0.6µm 6-layer-metal Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology with a die area of 9mm^2 .     A 300-800MHz Tunable Filter and Linearized LNA applied in a Low-Noise Harmonic-Rejection RF-Sampling Receiver

    A multiband flexible RF-sampling receiver aimed at software-defined radio is presented. The wideband RF sampling function is enabled by a recently proposed discrete-time mixing downconverter. This work exploits a voltage-sensing LNA preceded by a tunable LC pre-filter with one external coil to demonstrate an RF-sampling receiver with low noise figure (NF) and high harmonic rejection (HR). The second-order LC filter provides voltage pre-gain and attenuates the source noise aliasing, and it also improves the HR ratio of the sampling downconverter. The LNA consists of a simple amplifier topology built from inverters and resistors to improve the third-order nonlinearity via an enhanced voltage mirror technique. The RF-sampling receiver employs 8 times oversampling covering 300 to 800 MHz in two RF sub-bands. The chip is realized in 65 nm CMOS and the measured gain across the band is between 22 and 28 dB, while achieving a NF between 0.8 to 4.3 dB. The IIP2 varies between +38 and +49 dBm and the IIP3 between -14 dBm and -9 dBm, and the third and fifth order HR ratios are more than 60 dB.     Single-Chip Isolated DC-DC Converter with Self-Tuned Maximum Power Transfer Frequency

    abstract: There is an increasing demand for fully integrated point-of-load (POL) isolated DC-DC converters that can provide an isolation barrier between the primary and the secondary side, while delivering a low ripple, low noise regulated voltage at their isolated sides to a high dynamic range, sensitive mixed signal devices, such as sensors, current-shunt-monitors and ADCs. For these applications, smaller system size and integration level is important because the whole system may need to fit to limited space. Traditional methods for providing isolated power are discrete solutions using bulky transformers. Miniaturization of isolated POL regulators is becoming highly desirable for low power applications. A fully integrated, low noise isolated point-of-load DC-DC converter for supply regulation of high dynamic range analog and mixed signal sensor signal-chains is presented. The isolated DC-DC converter utilizes an integrated planar air-core micro-transformer as a coupled resonator and isolation barrier and enables direct connection of low-voltage mixed signal circuits to higher supply rails. The air core transformer is driven at its primary resonant frequency of 100 MHz to achieve maximum power transfer. A mixed-signal perturb-and-observe based frequency search algorithm is developed to improve maximum power transfer efficiency by 60% across the isolation barrier compared to fixed driving frequency method. The isolated converter’s output ripple is reduced by utilizing spread spectrum clocking in the driver. An isolated PMOS LDO in the secondary side is used to suppress switching noise and ripple by 21dB. Conducted and radiated EMI distribution on the IC is measured by a set of integrated ring oscillator based noise sensors with -68dBm noise sensitivity. The proposed isolated converter achieves highest level of integration with respect to earlier reported integrated isolated converters, while providing 50V on-chip junction isolation without the need for extra silicon post-processing steps.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    High-speed Time-interleaved Digital-to-Analog Converter (TI-DAC) for Self-Interference Cancellation Applications

    Nowadays, the need for higher data-rate is constantly growing to enhance the quality of the daily communication services. The full-duplex (FD) communication is exemplary method doubling the data-rate compared to half-duplex one. However, part of the strong output signal of the transmitter interferes to the receiver-side because they share the same antenna with limited attenuation and, as a result, the receiver’s performance is corrupted. Hence, it is critical to remove the leakage signal from the receiver’s path by designing another block called self-interference cancellation (SIC). The main goal of this dissertation is to develop the SIC block embedded in the current-mode FD receivers. To this end, the regenerated cancellation current signal is fed to the inputs of the base-band filter and after the mixer of a (direct-conversion) current-mode FD receiver. Since the pattern of the transmitter (the digital signal generated by DSP) is known, a high-speed digital-to-Analog converter (DAC) with medium-resolution can perfectly suppress main part of the leakage on the receiver path. A capacitive DAC (CDAC) is chosen among the available solutions because it is compatible with advanced CMOS technology for high-speed application and the medium-resolution designs. Although the main application of the design is to perform the cancellation, it can also be employed as a stand-alone DAC in the Analog (I/Q) transmitter. The SIC circuitry includes a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), two DACs, high-speed digital circuits, and built-in-self-test section (BIST). According to the available specification for full-duplex communication system, the resolution and working frequency of the CDAC are calculated (designed) equal to 10-bit (3 binary+ 2 binary + 5 thermometric) and 1GHz, respectively. In order to relax the design of the TIA (settling time of the DAC), the CDAC implements using 2-way time-interleaved (TI) manner (the effective SIC frequency equals 2GHz) without using any calibration technique. The CDAC is also developed with the split-capacitor technique to lower the negative effects of the conventional binary-weighted DAC. By adding one extra capacitor on the left-side of the split-capacitor, LSB-side, the value of the split-capacitor can be chosen as an integer value of the unit capacitor. As a result, it largely enhances the linearity of the CADC and cancellation performance. If the block works as a stand-alone DAC with non-TI mode, the digital input code representing a Sinus waveform with an amplitude 1dB less than full-scale and output frequency around 10.74MHz, chosen by coherent sampling rule, then the ENOB, SINAD, SFDR, and output signal are 9.4-bit, 58.2 dB, 68.4dBc, and -9dBV. The simulated value of the |DNL| (static linearity) is also less than 0.7. The similar simulation was done in the SIC mode while the capacitive-array woks in the TI mode and cancellation current is set to the full-scale. Hence, the amount of cancelling the SI signal at the output of the TIA, SNDR, SFDR, SNDRequ. equals 51.3dB, 15.1 dB, 24dBc, 66.4 dB. The designed SIC cannot work as a closed-loop design. The layout was optimally drawn in order to minimize non-linearity, the power-consumption of the decoders, and reduce the complexity of the DAC. By distributing the thermometric cells across the array and using symmetrical switching scheme, the DAC is less subjected to the linear and gradient effect of the oxide. Based on the post-layout simulation results, the deviation of the design after drawing the layout is studied. To compare the results of the schematic and post-layout designs, the exact conditions of simulation above (schematic simulations) are used. When the block works as a stand-alone CDAC, the ENOB, SINAD, SFDR are 8.5-bit, 52.6 dB, 61.3 dBc. The simulated value of the |DNL| (static linearity) is also limited to 1.3.
