Market orientation, market disruptiveness capability and social enterprise performance:An empirical study from the United Kingdom
This study investigates whether and how the pursuit of certain commercial business practices such as market orientation and market disruptiveness capability improves both the economic performance and social performance of social enterprises. Based on the empirical data collected from 164 UK social enterprises, our results show that market orientation improves social performance and economic performance simultaneously, whereas market disruptiveness capability improves only the economic performance, not the social performance, of social enterprises. However, we found that a positive interaction effect of market disruptiveness capability and market orientation on social performance, while its effect is negative on economic performance
An Ontological Approach to Representing the Product Life Cycle
The ability to access and share data is key to optimizing and streamlining any industrial production process. Unfortunately, the manufacturing industry is stymied by a lack of interoperability among the systems by which data are produced and managed, and this is true both within and across organizations. In this paper, we describe our work to address this problem through the creation of a suite of modular ontologies representing the product life cycle and its successive phases, from design to end of life. We call this suite the Product Life Cycle (PLC) Ontologies. The suite extends proximately from The Common Core Ontologies (CCO) used widely in defense and intelligence circles, and ultimately from the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), which serves as top level ontology for the CCO and for some 300 further ontologies. The PLC Ontologies were developed together, but they have been factored to cover particular domains such as design, manufacturing processes, and tools. We argue that these ontologies, when used together with standard public domain alignment and browsing tools created within the context of the Semantic Web, may offer a low-cost approach to solving increasingly costly problems of data management in the manufacturing industry
Dynamic real-time risk analytics of uncontrollable states in complex internet of things systems, cyber risk at the edge
The Internet of Things (IoT) triggers new types of cyber risks. Therefore,
the integration of new IoT devices and services requires a self-assessment of
IoT cyber security posture. By security posture this article refers to the
cybersecurity strength of an organisation to predict, prevent and respond to
cyberthreats. At present, there is a gap in the state of the art, because there
are no self-assessment methods for quantifying IoT cyber risk posture. To
address this gap, an empirical analysis is performed of 12 cyber risk
assessment approaches. The results and the main findings from the analysis is
presented as the current and a target risk state for IoT systems, followed by
conclusions and recommendations on a transformation roadmap, describing how IoT
systems can achieve the target state with a new goal-oriented dependency model.
By target state, we refer to the cyber security target that matches the generic
security requirements of an organisation. The research paper studies and adapts
four alternatives for IoT risk assessment and identifies the goal-oriented
dependency modelling as a dominant approach among the risk assessment models
studied. The new goal-oriented dependency model in this article enables the
assessment of uncontrollable risk states in complex IoT systems and can be used
for a quantitative self-assessment of IoT cyber risk posture
Digital maturity variables and their impact on the enterprise architecture layers
This study examines the variables of digital maturity of companies. The framework for enterprise architectures Archimate 3.0 is used to compare the variables. The variables are assigned to the six layers of architecture: Strategy, Business Environment, Applications, Technology, Physical and Implementation and Migration. On the basis of a literature overview, 15 “digital maturity models” with a total of 147 variables are analyzed. The databases Scopus, EBSCO – Business Source Premier and ProQuest are used for this purpose
Smart education for smart textiles
The aim of this paper is to present the main objectives and achievements of the Skills4Smartex project,
according to its declared goals. The Erasmus+ project "Smart textiles for STEM training" is funded with support
from the European Commission and it is a Strategic partnership - KA2 / Vocational Education and Training
(VET), in the field of transfer of innovation from research providers towards textile enterprises & VET schools.
The students within technical education acquire basic disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, technical
drawing, chemistry, biology, mechanics, but the horizon of the end applications and usefulness of such basic
disciplines is often not touchable. In correlation with these facts, the Skills4Smartex project is centred on
improving knowledge, skills and employability of VET students in the STEM related fields, by providing the
adequate training instruments to understand multidisciplinary working
Methodology for Designing Decision Support Systems for Visualising and Mitigating Supply Chain Cyber Risk from IoT Technologies
This paper proposes a methodology for designing decision support systems for
visualising and mitigating the Internet of Things cyber risks. Digital
technologies present new cyber risk in the supply chain which are often not
visible to companies participating in the supply chains. This study
investigates how the Internet of Things cyber risks can be visualised and
mitigated in the process of designing business and supply chain strategies. The
emerging DSS methodology present new findings on how digital technologies
affect business and supply chain systems. Through epistemological analysis, the
article derives with a decision support system for visualising supply chain
cyber risk from Internet of Things digital technologies. Such methods do not
exist at present and this represents the first attempt to devise a decision
support system that would enable practitioners to develop a step by step
process for visualising, assessing and mitigating the emerging cyber risk from
IoT technologies on shared infrastructure in legacy supply chain systems
Perspectives on innovation within medium-sized firms in Wales
The Welsh economy is heading towards a post-Brexit future with historically lower levels of productivity continuing to leave the country lagging behind the UK average (Huggins and Williams, 2011; Welsh Government, 2017).
