    Letters from the War of Ecosystems – An Analysis of Independent Software Vendors in Mobile Application Marketplaces

    The recent emergence of a new generation of mobile application marketplaces has changed the business in the mobile ecosystems. The marketplaces have gathered over a million applications by hundreds of thousands of application developers and publishers. Thus, software ecosystems&mdash;consisting of developers, consumers and the orchestrator&mdash;have emerged as a part of the mobile ecosystem.&nbsp; This dissertation addresses the new challenges faced by mobile application developers in the new ecosystems through empirical methods. By using the theories of two-sided markets and business ecosystems as the basis, the thesis assesses monetization and value creation in the market as well as the impact of electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM) and developer multihoming&mdash; i. e. contributing for more than one platform&mdash;in the ecosystems. The data for the study was collected with web crawling from the three biggest marketplaces: Apple App Store, Google Play and Windows Phone Store.&nbsp; The dissertation consists of six individual articles. The results of the studies show a gap in monetization among the studied applications, while a majority of applications are produced by small or micro-enterprises. The study finds only weak support for the impact of eWOM on the sales of an application in the studied ecosystem. Finally, the study reveals a clear difference in the multi-homing rates between the top application developers and the rest. This has, as discussed in the thesis, an impact on the future market analyses&mdash;it seems that the smart device market can sustain several parallel application marketplaces. - - - - - Muutama vuosi sitten julkistetut uuden sukupolven mobiilisovellusten kauppapaikat ovat muuttaneet mobiiliekosysteemien liiketoimintadynamiikkaa.     Hardware, software and control design considerations towards low-cost compliant quadruped robots

    Quadrupedal robots have been a field of interest the last few years, with many new maturing platforms. Many of these projects have in common the use of state of the art actuation and sensing, and therefore are able to handle difficult locomotion tasks very effectively. This work focuses on another trend of low-cost, quadrupedal robots, that features less precise actuators and sensors, but overcomes their limitations with strong bio-inspired designs to achieve state of the art locomotion. We aim here to further extend the achievements of this approach to handle more complex tasks and that require anticipation, We would like also to verify to which extent a close synergy between clever mechanics, sensorimotor coordination, and Central Pattern Generator models is able to handle these tasks. This thesis presents supporting work that was required to pursue this goal. A software architecture for the development of real-time drivers and low-level control for robotic applications, based on a clear separation of concerns is presented. An implementation of this architecture able to handle the specific requirements for small compliant quadruped robots is proposed. Furthermore, the development and integration of a communication protocol for inter-electronic devices communication on the Oncilla robot is discussed. As leg load is a key quantity in some of the sensory-motor coordination this thesis want to explore, a novel tactile sensing approach for its estimation is proposed, based on an Extended Kalman Filter data fusion of static and dynamic tactile sensor information. Then, to support the design of efficient interactions between the control and the bio-inspired mechanics, accurate dynamic modeling of the Advanced Spring Loaded Pantographic leg, equipping all robots considered here, is presented. We propose two approaches to this modeling with the presentation of their benefits and limitations. Finally, two Central Pattern Generator architectures are proposed, based on biologically inspired foot trajectories. The first is using a well-known method for inter-limb coordination with strong neural coupling, and the second, the Tegotae rule, relies only on limb physical coupling and strong sensory-motor coordination. These two approaches are compared on their capacity to handle dynamic footstep placement and it let to the conclusion that strong sensory-motor coordination is required for this task

    The Perception of American Adolescent Culture Through the Dubbing and Fansubbing of a Selection of US Teen Series from 1990 to 2013

    The present dissertation aims at analyzing the construction of American adolescent culture through teen-targeted television series and the shift in perception that occurs as a consequence of the translation process. In light of the recent changes in television production and consumption modes, largely caused by new technologies, this project explores the evolution of Italian audiences, focusing on fansubbing (freely distributed amateur subtitles made by fans for fan consumption) and social viewing (the re-aggregation of television consumption based on social networks and dedicated platforms, rather than on physical presence). These phenomena are symptoms of a sort of ‘viewership 2.0’ and of a new type of active viewing, which calls for a revision of traditional AVT strategies. Using a framework that combines television studies, new media studies, and fandom studies with an approach to AVT based on Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury 1995), this dissertation analyzes the non-Anglophone audience’s growing need to participation in the global dialogue and appropriation process based on US scheduling and informed by the new paradigm of convergence culture, transmedia storytelling, and affective economics (Jenkins 2006 and 2007), as well as the constraints intrinsic to multimodal translation and the different types of linguistic and cultural adaptation performed through dubbing (which tends to be more domesticating; Venuti 1995) and fansubbing (typically more foreignizing). The study analyzes a selection of episodes from six of the most popular teen television series between 1990 and 2013, which has been divided into three ages based on the different modes of television consumption: top-down, pre-Internet consumption (Beverly Hills, 90210, 1990 – 2000), emergence of audience participation (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 1997 – 2003; Dawson’s Creek, 1998 – 2003), age of convergence and Viewership 2.0 (Gossip Girl, 2007 – 2012; Glee, 2009 – present; The Big Bang Theory, 2007 - present)

    Combining SOA and BPM Technologies for Cross-System Process Automation

    This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step. The discussion also covers language and tool support and challenges arising from the transformation

    Distributed Web Service Coordination for Collaboration Applications and Biological Workflows

    In this dissertation work, we have investigated the main research thrust of decentralized coordination of workflows over web services. To address distributed workflow coordination, first we have developed “Web Coordination Bonds” as a capable set of dependency modeling primitives that enable each web service to manage its own dependencies. Web bond primitives are as powerful as extended Petri nets and have sufficient modeling and expressive capabilities to model workflow dependencies. We have designed and prototyped our “Web Service Coordination Management Middleware” (WSCMM) system that enhances current web services infrastructure to accommodate web bond enabled web services. Finally, based on core concepts of web coordination bonds and WSCMM, we have developed the “BondFlow” system that allows easy configuration distributed coordination of workflows. The footprint of the BonFlow runtime is 24KB and the additional third party software packages, SOAP client and XML parser, account for 115KB
