Intelligent-Reflecting-Surface-Assisted UAV Communications for 6G Networks
In 6th-Generation (6G) mobile networks, Intelligent Reflective Surfaces
(IRSs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as promising
technologies to address the coverage difficulties and resource constraints
faced by terrestrial networks. UAVs, with their mobility and low costs, offer
diverse connectivity options for mobile users and a novel deployment paradigm
for 6G networks. However, the limited battery capacity of UAVs, dynamic and
unpredictable channel environments, and communication resource constraints
result in poor performance of traditional UAV-based networks. IRSs can not only
reconstruct the wireless environment in a unique way, but also achieve wireless
network relay in a cost-effective manner. Hence, it receives significant
attention as a promising solution to solve the above challenges. In this
article, we conduct a comprehensive survey on IRS-assisted UAV communications
for 6G networks. First, primary issues, key technologies, and application
scenarios of IRS-assisted UAV communications for 6G networks are introduced.
Then, we put forward specific solutions to the issues of IRS-assisted UAV
communications. Finally, we discuss some open issues and future research
directions to guide researchers in related fields
Towards Massive Machine Type Communications in Ultra-Dense Cellular IoT Networks: Current Issues and Machine Learning-Assisted Solutions
The ever-increasing number of resource-constrained
Machine-Type Communication (MTC) devices is leading to the
critical challenge of fulfilling diverse communication requirements
in dynamic and ultra-dense wireless environments. Among
different application scenarios that the upcoming 5G and beyond
cellular networks are expected to support, such as enhanced Mobile
Broadband (eMBB), massive Machine Type Communications
(mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications
(URLLC), the mMTC brings the unique technical challenge of
supporting a huge number of MTC devices in cellular networks,
which is the main focus of this paper. The related challenges
include Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning, handling highly
dynamic and sporadic MTC traffic, huge signalling overhead and
Radio Access Network (RAN) congestion. In this regard, this
paper aims to identify and analyze the involved technical issues,
to review recent advances, to highlight potential solutions and to
propose new research directions. First, starting with an overview
of mMTC features and QoS provisioning issues, we present
the key enablers for mMTC in cellular networks. Along with
the highlights on the inefficiency of the legacy Random Access
(RA) procedure in the mMTC scenario, we then present the key
features and channel access mechanisms in the emerging cellular
IoT standards, namely, LTE-M and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT).
Subsequently, we present a framework for the performance
analysis of transmission scheduling with the QoS support along
with the issues involved in short data packet transmission. Next,
we provide a detailed overview of the existing and emerging
solutions towards addressing RAN congestion problem, and then
identify potential advantages, challenges and use cases for the
applications of emerging Machine Learning (ML) techniques in
ultra-dense cellular networks. Out of several ML techniques, we
focus on the application of low-complexity Q-learning approach
in the mMTC scenario along with the recent advances towards
enhancing its learning performance and convergence. Finally,
we discuss some open research challenges and promising future
research directions
Facilitating Internet of Things on the Edge
The evolution of electronics and wireless technologies has entered a new era, the Internet of Things (IoT). Presently, IoT technologies influence the global market, bringing benefits in many areas, including healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and entertainment.
Modern IoT devices serve as a thin client with data processing performed in a remote computing node, such as a cloud server or a mobile edge compute unit. These computing units own significant resources that allow prompt data processing. The user experience for such an approach relies drastically on the availability and quality of the internet connection. In this case, if the internet connection is unavailable, the resulting operations of IoT applications can be completely disrupted. It is worth noting that emerging IoT applications are even more throughput demanding and latency-sensitive which makes communication networks a practical bottleneck for the service provisioning. This thesis aims to eliminate the limitations of wireless access, via the improvement of connectivity and throughput between the devices on the edge, as well as their network identification, which is fundamentally important for IoT service management.
The introduction begins with a discussion on the emerging IoT applications and their demands. Subsequent chapters introduce scenarios of interest, describe the proposed solutions and provide selected performance evaluation results. Specifically, we start with research on the use of degraded memory chips for network identification of IoT devices as an alternative to conventional methods, such as IMEI; these methods are not vulnerable to tampering and cloning. Further, we introduce our contributions for improving connectivity and throughput among IoT devices on the edge in a case where the mobile network infrastructure is limited or totally unavailable. Finally, we conclude the introduction with a summary of the results achieved
Advances in Intelligent Robotics and Collaborative Automation
This book provides an overview of a series of advanced research lines in robotics as well as of design and development methodologies for intelligent robots and their intelligent components. It represents a selection of extended versions of the best papers presented at the Seventh IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications IDAACS 2013 that were related to these topics. Its contents integrate state of the art computational intelligence based techniques for automatic robot control to novel distributed sensing and data integration methodologies that can be applied to intelligent robotics and automation systems. Location Privacy-Preserving Strategies for Secondary Spectrum Use
The scarcity of wireless spectrum resources and the overwhelming demand for wireless broadband resources have prompted industry, government agencies and academia within the wireless communities to develop and come up with effective solutions that can make additional spectrum available for broadband data. As part of these ongoing efforts, cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have emerged as an essential technology for enabling and promoting dynamic spectrum access and sharing, a paradigm primarily aimed at addressing the spectrum scarcity and shortage challenges by permitting and enabling unlicensed or secondary users (SUs) to freely search, locate and exploit unused licensed spectrum opportunities. Despite their great potentials for improving
spectrum utilization efficiency and for addressing the spectrum shortage problem, CRNs suffer from serious location privacy issues, which essentially tend to disclose the location information of the SUs to other system entities during their usage of these open spectrum opportunities. Knowing that their whereabouts may be exposed, SUs can be discouraged from joining and participating in the CRNs, potentially hindering the adoption and deployment of this technology. In this thesis, we propose frameworks that are suitable for CRNs, but also preserve the location privacy information of these SU s. More specifically,
1. We propose location privacy-preserving protocols that protect the location privacy of SUs in cooperative sensing-based CRNs while allowing the SUs to perform their spectrum sensing tasks reliably and effectively. Our proposed protocols allow also the detection of malicious user activities through the adoption of reputation mechanisms.
2. We propose location privacy-preserving approaches that provide information-theoretic privacy to SU s’ location in database-driven CRNs through the exploitation of the structured nature of spectrum databases and the fact that database-driven CRNs, by design, rely on multiple spectrum databases.
3. We propose a trustworthy framework for new generation of spectrum access systems in the 3.5 GHz band that not only protects SUs’ privacy, but also ensures that they comply with the unique system requirements, while allowing the detection of misbehaving users
Crab and cockle shells as heterogeneous catalysts in the production of biodiesel
In the present study, the waste crab and cockle shells were utilized as source of calcium oxide to transesterify palm olein into methyl esters (biodiesel). Characterization results revealed that the main component of the shells are calcium carbonate which transformed into calcium oxide
upon activated above 700 °C for 2 h. Parametric studies have been investigated and optimal conditions were found to be catalyst amount, 5 wt.% and methanol/oil mass ratio, 0.5:1. The waste catalysts perform equally well as laboratory CaO, thus creating another low-cost catalyst source for producing biodiesel. Reusability results confirmed that the prepared catalyst is able to be reemployed up to five times. Statistical analysis has been

Molecular phylogeny of horseshoe crab using mitochondrial Cox1 gene as a benchmark sequence
An effort to assess the utility of 650 bp Cytochrome C
oxidase subunit I (DNA barcode) gene in delineating the members horseshoe crabs (Family: xiphosura) with closely related sister taxa was made. A total of 33 sequences were extracted from National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI) which include horseshoe crabs, beetles, common crabs and scorpion sequences. Constructed phylogram showed beetles are closely related with horseshoe crabs than
common crabs. Scorpion spp were distantly related to
xiphosurans. Phylogram and observed genetic distance (GD) date were also revealed that Limulus polyphemus was closely related with Tachypleus tridentatus than with T.gigas. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda was distantly related with
L.polyphemus. The observed mean Genetic Distance (GD) value was higher in 3rd codon position in all the selected group of organisms. Among the horseshoe crabs high GC content was observed in L.polyphemus (38.32%) and lowest was observed in T.tridentatus (32.35%).
