    Random Linear Network Coding for 5G Mobile Video Delivery

    An exponential increase in mobile video delivery will continue with the demand for higher resolution, multi-view and large-scale multicast video services. Novel fifth generation (5G) 3GPP New Radio (NR) standard will bring a number of new opportunities for optimizing video delivery across both 5G core and radio access networks. One of the promising approaches for video quality adaptation, throughput enhancement and erasure protection is the use of packet-level random linear network coding (RLNC). In this review paper, we discuss the integration of RLNC into the 5G NR standard, building upon the ideas and opportunities identified in 4G LTE. We explicitly identify and discuss in detail novel 5G NR features that provide support for RLNC-based video delivery in 5G, thus pointing out to the promising avenues for future research.Comment: Invited paper for Special Issue "Network and Rateless Coding for Video Streaming" - MDPI Informatio

Recent enhancements cover not only television services, but also critical machine-type and vehicular communications, following the backward-compatibility design philosophy of LTE. This article discusses the opportunity in the design and standardization of 5G to break with the existing paradigm for PTM transmissions in 4G LTE, where broadcast PTM transmissions were initially conceived as an add-on and pre-positioned service. 5G brings the opportunity to incorporate PTM capabilities as built-in delivery features from the outset, integrating point-to-point and PTM modes under one common framework and enabling dynamic use of PTM to maximize network and spectrum efficiency. This approach will open the door to completely new levels of network management and delivery cost efficiency.     Policy-Based Dynamic Proxy Framework: An Application Level Infrastructure For Active Service Creation And Contents Delivery

    This thesis focuses on the dynamic proxy framework named the Chek Proxy Framework (CPF). The main objectives are to scale the existing Internet architecture by conserving the backbone bandwidth, reducing server loads, and improving the overall networking system performance, particularly the client receiving rate. These were achieved by deploying application-level proxy services within the network, to accelerate and customise the delivery of contents. The CPF is based on the 3-tier distributed computing architecture with the client and server residing at the ends of the respective networks. A dynamically appointed middle-tier system, the Dynamic Application Proxy Server (DAPS) is created ondemand and resides at the client-side network based on the designed clustering policy. The uniqueness of CPF lies on the use of voluntary client machines, instead of static and dedicated machines to host DAPS services created at runtime

    Reliable Multicast Transport for Heterogeneous Mobile IP environment using Cross-Layer Information

    Reliable multicast transport architecture designed for heterogeneous mobile IP environment using cross-layer information for enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) and seamless handover is discussed. In particular, application-specific reliable multicast retransmission schemes are proposed, which are aimed to minimize the protocol overhead taking into account behaviour of mobile receivers (loss of connectivity and handover) and the specific application requirements for reliable delivery (such as carousel, one-to-many download and streaming delivery combined with recording). The proposed localized retransmission strategies are flexible configured for tree-based multicast transport. Cross layer interactions in order to enhance reliable transport and support seamless handover is discussed considering IEEE 802.21 media independent handover mechanisms. The implementation is based on Linux IPv6 environment. Simulations in ns2 focusing on the benefits of the proposed multicast retransmission schemes for particular application scenarios are presented

    GRIDKIT: Pluggable overlay networks for Grid computing

    A `second generation' approach to the provision of Grid middleware is now emerging which is built on service-oriented architecture and web services standards and technologies. However, advanced Grid applications have significant demands that are not addressed by present-day web services platforms. As one prime example, current platforms do not support the rich diversity of communication `interaction types' that are demanded by advanced applications (e.g. publish-subscribe, media streaming, peer-to-peer interaction). In the paper we describe the Gridkit middleware which augments the basic service-oriented architecture to address this particular deficiency. We particularly focus on the communications infrastructure support required to support multiple interaction types in a unified, principled and extensible manner-which we present in terms of the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks

    Video streaming with quality adaption using collaborative active grid networks

    Due to the services and demands of the end users, Distributed Computing (Grid Technology, Web Services, and Peer-to-Peer) has been developedrapidJy in thelastyears. Theconvergence of these architectures has been possible using mechanisms such as Collaborative work and Resources Sharing. Grid computing is a platform to enable flexible, secure, controlled, scalable, ubiquitous and heterogeneous services. On the other hand, Video Streaming applications demand a greater deployment over connected Internet users. The present work uses the Acti ve Grid technology as a fundamental platform to give a solution of multimediacontentrecovery. This solution takes into account the following key concepts: collaborative work, multi-source recovery and adapti ve quality. A new archi tecture is designed to deliver video content over a Grid Network. The acti ve and passi ve roles of the nodes are important to guarantee a high quality and efficiency for the video streaming system. The acti ve sender nodes are the content suppliers, while the passive sender nodes wiU perform the backup functions, based on global resource control policies. The aim of the backup node is minirnize the time to restore the systemin caseoffailures. In this way, all participant peers work in a collaborati ve manner following a mul ti -source recovery scheme. Furthermore, Video La yered Encoding is used to manage the video data in a high scalable way, di viding the video in multiple layers. This video codification scheme enables thequality adaptation according to the availability of system resources. In addition, a buffer by sender peer and by layer is needed for an effecti ve control ofthe video retrieve. The QoS will fit considering the state of each buffer and the measurement tools provide by the Acti ve Grid on the network nodes.
