Do we only have 5 senses? Can human beings be divided into races? Can cold weather or being chilled cause a cold? Is the Amazon rainforest the lung of the planet? Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Do we humans only use 10% of our cerebral capacity? All of these ideas belong to the collective mindset of our society. Ideas that either originate from hypotheses that are correct but are poorly applied, or are totally fake. Thus, despite the excessive amounts of information that is available nowadays, the lack of informational education and diffusion of all kinds of informational disorders create a breeding ground that is ideal for the transmission and reapplication for misinformation. The aim of this book is not only to compilate and dismantle 70 biological myths using up-to-date scientific information but also contribute with activities that can be used in class (mainly for secondary school levels), compilate complementary resources to keep an inquiring mindset towards the same and assist with tools to develop a critic perspective with the information that we come across. That way, we want to promote the scientific alphabetization of the population taking interdisciplinarity, gender perspective, respect for diversity, healthcare promotion and sustainability and care for the environment as its axis

Intelligent interface agents for biometric applications

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the benefits of applying the intelligent agent paradigm to biometric identity verification systems. Multimodal biometric systems, despite their additional complexity, hold the promise of providing a higher degree of accuracy and robustness. Multimodal biometric systems are examined in this work leading to the design and implementation of a novel distributed multi-modal identity verification system based on an intelligent agent framework. User interface design issues are also important in the domain of biometric systems and present an exceptional opportunity for employing adaptive interface agents. Through the use of such interface agents, system performance may be improved, leading to an increase in recognition rates over a non-adaptive system while producing a more robust and agreeable user experience. The investigation of such adaptive systems has been a focus of the work reported in this thesis. The research presented in this thesis is divided into two main parts. Firstly, the design, development and testing of a novel distributed multi-modal authentication system employing intelligent agents is presented. The second part details design and implementation of an adaptive interface layer based on interface agent technology and demonstrates its integration with a commercial fingerprint recognition system. The performance of these systems is then evaluated using databases of biometric samples gathered during the research. The results obtained from the experimental evaluation of the multi-modal system demonstrated a clear improvement in the accuracy of the system compared to a unimodal biometric approach. The adoption of the intelligent agent architecture at the interface level resulted in a system where false reject rates were reduced when compared to a system that did not employ an intelligent interface. The results obtained from both systems clearly express the benefits of combining an intelligent agent framework with a biometric system to provide a more robust and flexible application

This study focused on the Universal Middleware design for the IoT (Internet of Things) service gateway for the implementation module of the convergence platform. Recently, IoT service gateway including convergence platform could be supported on dynamic module system that is required mounting and recognized intelligent status with the remote network protocol. These awareness concepts support the dynamic environment of the cross-platform distributed computing technology is supported by these idea as a Universal Middleware for network substitution. Distribution system commonly used in recent embedded systems include CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture), RMI (Remote Method Invocation), DCE (Distributed Computing Environment) for dynamic service interface, and suggested implementations of a device object context. However, the aforementioned technologies do not support each standardization of application services, communication protocols, and data, but are also limited in supporting inter-system scalability. In particular, in order to configure an IoT service module, the system can be simplified, and an independent service module can be configured as long as it can support the standardization of modules based on hardware and software components. This paper proposed a design method for Universal Middleware that, by providing IoT modules and service gateways with scalability for configuring operating system configuration, may be utilized as an alternative. This design could be a standardized interface provisioning way for hardware and software components as convergence services, and providing a framework for system construction. Universal Middleware Framework could be presented and dynamic environment standardization module of network protocols, various application service modules such as JINI (Apache River), UPnP (Universal Plug & Play), SLP (Service Location Protocol) bundles that provide communication facilities, and persistence data module. In this IoT gateway, management for based Universal Middleware framework support and available for each management operation, application service component could be cross-executed over SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) version 1, version 2, and version 3. The way of SNMP extension service modules are conducted cross-support each module and independent system meta-information that could be built life cycle management component through the MIB (Management Information Base) information unit analysis. Therefore, the MIB role of relation with the Dispatcher applied to support multiple concurrent SNMP messages by receiving incoming messages and managing the transfer of PDU (Protocol Data Unit) between the RFC 1906 network in this study. Results of the study revealed utilizing Universal Middleware that dynamic situations of context objects with mechanisms and tools to publish information could be consisted of IoT to standardize module interfaces to external service clients as a convergence between hardware and software platforms

A good architectural design has a high contribution to the success of a system. In addition, this architectural design is useful for the Information Technology (IT) students as their basis of their software development of their capstone project. The utilization of inappropriate architecture can lead to disastrous consequences for IT student researchers. A detailed understanding of software architecture styles is very useful to analyze distributed and complex systems which is the trend of capstone projects. This paper explores the quality attributes of three architecture styles namely shared-nothing, broker, and representational state transfer, which are perceived as beneficial to distributed system architecture that serve as guide to student researchers. This is to provide a picture of the said three key software architecture styles which could be helpful not only for student researchers but also for the software developers by adding references to minimize the uncertainty while selecting the appropriate architectural style for their specific needs. An architectural style must be chosen correctly to obtain all its benefits in the system. In this paper, the three architectural styles are compared on the foundation of various quality attributes derived from ISO 9126-1 standard such as functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability. The results of the study are useful to guide the student researchers in their capstone project and to reduce the number of unsuccessful attempts of software development component of their capstone project

    Get PDF
The use of agents across diverse domains within computer science and artificial intelligence is experiencing a notable surge in response to the imperatives of adaptability, efficiency, and scalability. The subject of this study is the application of formal methods to furnish a framework for knowledge interpretation with a specific focus on the agent-based paradigm in software engineering. This study aims to advance a formal approach to knowledge interpretation by leveraging the agent-based paradigm. The objectives are as follows: 1) to examine the current state of the agent-based paradigm in software engineering; 2) to describe the basic concepts of the knowledge interpretation approach; 3) to study the general structure of the rule extraction task; 4) to develop the reference structure of knowledge interpretation; 5) to develop a multi-agent system architecture; 6) and to discuss the research results. This study employs formal methods, including the use of closed path rules and predicate logic. Specifically, the integration of closed path rules contributes to the extraction and explication of facts from extensive knowledge bases. The obtained results encompass the following: 1) a rule mining approach grounded in closed path rules and tailored for processing extensive datasets; 2) a formalization of relevance that facilitates the scrutiny and automated exclusion of irrelevant fragments from the explanatory framework; and 3) the realization of a multi-agent system predicated on the synergy among five distinct types of agents, dedicated to rule extraction and the interpretation of acquired knowledge. This paper provides an example of the application of the proposed formal tenets, demonstrating their practical context. The conclusion underscores that the agent-based paradigm, with its emphasis on decentralized and autonomous entities, presents an innovative framework for handling the intricacies of knowledge processing. It extends to the retrieval of facts and rules. By distributing functions across multiple agents, the framework offers a dynamic and scalable solution to effectively interpret vast knowledge repositories. This approach is particularly valuable in scenarios where traditional methods may struggle to cope with the volume and complexity of information

[EN] Vernacular architecture is often said to be adapted to the place and the way of life of its inhabitants. But societies and their cultures are not static. Behaviour and environment change and, with them, so does the way it is built. At the same time, this type of architecture has brought together qualities and achieved a degree of harmony between nature, building and community that has not always managed to be emulated by the modern architectural profession. Thus, an apparent contradiction arises: how to preserve the know-how of these environments in change. The synthesis between preservation and adaptation seems to be resolved in learning: what lessons from the vernacular can be drawn and applied to contemporary planning despite the transformations? To approach the answer, the research is based on a background of studies: on the general context of rural transformation in a perspective where change seems inevitable; on vernacular architecture, its study and some criticism of certain trends of modernity; and on the specific context of research in Burkina Faso. On this basis, the work is situated in two scenarios: that of traditional Mossi architecture in the village of Baasneere (Centre-North Region), built, inhabited and immersed in a process of change similar to that of other traditional habitats in the country; that of the modern discipline and profession of architecture in Burkina Faso, with different attitudes towards the vernacular throughout the historical periods of the country's urbanisation. Each scenario suggests specific research questions that are addressed by means of a literature review on each topic, a field study with participant observation, open and semi-structured interviews, graphic documentation, and the creation of sheets to record cases of traditional dwellings and their changes. In the first scenario, the observation of the transformations affecting vernacular architecture, justified by social and cultural changes, makes it possible to identify some conflicts and lessons. In the second scenario, a rapprochement of the discipline towards the local can be seen in certain tendencies, definitely put into practice in some cases of development cooperation projects. It seems to be in this field of work that some of the lessons of the vernacular find their most direct application. Finally, the research approach opens up to propose a reflection on the points in common with other contexts at the global level. If a particular form of progress has triggered similar changes in rural environments globally, alternative ways of looking at it should lead to common solutions. In short, the consideration of vernacular environments, arising from relations of cooperation and symbiosis, could have the significance, in the first half of the 21st century, of awakening a certain awareness of adequacy and showing possible ways of action to work on the real adaptation of our environments and the rootedness of our societies.Lidón De Miguel, M. Get PDF
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next-generation ground-based observatory to study the universe in the very-high-energy domain. The observatory will rely on a Science Alert Generation (SAG) system to analyze the real-time data from the telescopes and generate science alerts. The SAG system will play a crucial role in the search and follow-up of transients from external alerts, enabling multi-wavelength and multi-messenger collaborations. It will maximize the potential for the detection of the rarest phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are the science case for this study. This study presents an anomaly detection method based on deep learning for detecting gamma-ray burst events in real-time. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared against the Li&Ma standard technique in two use cases of serendipitous discoveries and follow-up observations, using short exposure times. The method shows promising results in detecting GRBs and is flexible enough to allow real-time search for transient events on multiple time scales. The method does not assume background nor source models and doe not require a minimum number of photon counts to perform analysis, making it well-suited for real-time analysis. Future improvements involve further tests, relaxing some of the assumptions made in this study as well as post-trials correction of the detection significance. Moreover, the ability to detect other transient classes in different scenarios must be investigated for completeness. The system can be integrated within the SAG system of CTA and deployed on the onsite computing clusters. This would provide valuable insights into the method's performance in a real-world setting and be another valuable tool for discovering new transient events in real-time. Overall, this study makes a significant contribution to the field of astrophysics by demonstrating the effectiveness of deep learning-based anomaly detection techniques for real-time source detection in gamma-ray astronomy.
