An Extensive Review on Spectral Imaging in Biometric Systems: Challenges and Advancements
Spectral imaging has recently gained traction for face recognition in
biometric systems. We investigate the merits of spectral imaging for face
recognition and the current challenges that hamper the widespread deployment of
spectral sensors for face recognition. The reliability of conventional face
recognition systems operating in the visible range is compromised by
illumination changes, pose variations and spoof attacks. Recent works have
reaped the benefits of spectral imaging to counter these limitations in
surveillance activities (defence, airport security checks, etc.). However, the
implementation of this technology for biometrics, is still in its infancy due
to multiple reasons. We present an overview of the existing work in the domain
of spectral imaging for face recognition, different types of modalities and
their assessment, availability of public databases for sake of reproducible
research as well as evaluation of algorithms, and recent advancements in the
field, such as, the use of deep learning-based methods for recognizing faces
from spectral images
Non-Parametric Spatial Spectral Band Selection methods
© Cranfield University 2021. All rights reserved. No part of this
publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the
copyright ownerThis project is about the development of band selection (BS) techniques for better
target detection and classification in remote sensing and hyperspectral imaging
(HSI). Conventionally, this is achieved just by using the spectral features for
guiding the band compression. However, this project develops a BS method
which uses both spatial and spectral features to allow a handful of crucial spectral
bands to be selected for enhancing the target detection and classification
performances.
This thesis firstly outlines the fundamental concepts and background of remote
sensing and HSI, followed by the theories of different atmospheric correction
algorithms — in order to assess the reflectance conversion for band selection —
and BS techniques, with a detailed explanation of the Hughes principle, which
postulates the fundamental drawback for having high-dimensional data in HSI.
Subsequently, the thesis highlights the performances of some advanced BS
techniques and to point out their deficiencies. Most of the existing BS work in the field have exhibited maximal classification
accuracy when more spectral bands have been utilized for classification; this
apparently disagrees with the theoretical model of the Hughes phenomenon. The
thesis then presents a spatial spectral mutual information (SSMI) BS scheme
which utilizes a spatial feature extraction technique as a pre-processing step,
followed by the clustering of the mutual information (MI) of spectral bands for
enhancing the BS efficiency. Through this BS scheme, a sharp ’bell’-shaped
accuracy-dimensionality characteristic has been observed, peaking at about 20
bands.
The performance of the proposed SSMI BS scheme has been validated through
6 HSI datasets, and its classification accuracy is shown to be ~10% better than 7
state-of-the-art BS algorithms. These results confirm that the high efficiency of
the BS scheme is essentially important to observe, and to validate, the Hughes
phenomenon at band selection through experiments for the first time.PH

Fast embedding for image classification & retrieval and its application to the hostel industry
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonContent-based image classification and retrieval are the automatic processes of taking
an unseen image input and extracting its features representing the input image. Then,
for the classification task, this mathematically measured input is categorized according
to established criteria in the server and consequently shows the output as a result. On
the other hand, for the retrieval task, the extracted features of an unseen query image
are sent to the server to search for the most visually similar images to a given image
and retrieve these images as a result. Despite image features could be represented
by classical features, artificial intelligence-based features, Convolutional Neural
Networks (CNN) to be precise, have become powerful tools in the field. Nonetheless,
the high dimensional CNN features have been a challenge in particular for applications
on mobile or Internet of Things devices. Therefore, in this thesis, several fast
embeddings are explored and proposed to overcome the constraints of low memory,
bandwidth, and power. Furthermore, the first hostel image database is created with
three datasets, hostel image dataset containing 13,908 interior and exterior images of
hostels across the world, and Hostels-900 dataset and Hostels-2K dataset containing
972 images and 2,380 images, respectively, of 20 London hostel buildings. The results
demonstrate that the proposed fast embeddings such as the application of GHM-Rand
operator, GHM-Fix operator, and binary feature vectors are able to outperform or give
competitive results to those state-of-the-art methods with a lot less computational
resource. Additionally, the findings from a ten-year literature review of CBIR study in
the tourism industry could picturize the relevant research activities in the past decade
which are not only beneficial to the hostel industry or tourism sector but also to the
computer science and engineering research communities for the potential real-life
applications of the existing and developing technologies in the field
Entropy in Image Analysis II
Image analysis is a fundamental task for any application where extracting information from images is required. The analysis requires highly sophisticated numerical and analytical methods, particularly for those applications in medicine, security, and other fields where the results of the processing consist of data of vital importance. This fact is evident from all the articles composing the Special Issue "Entropy in Image Analysis II", in which the authors used widely tested methods to verify their results. In the process of reading the present volume, the reader will appreciate the richness of their methods and applications, in particular for medical imaging and image security, and a remarkable cross-fertilization among the proposed research areas
A survey on classification algorithms of brain images in Alzheimer’s disease based on feature extraction techniques
Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most serious neurological disorders for elderly people. AD affected patient experiences severe memory loss. One of the main reasons for memory loss in AD patients is atrophy in the hippocampus, amygdala, etc. Due to the enormous growth of AD patients and the paucity of proper diagnostic tools, detection and classification of AD are considered as a challenging research area. Before a Cognitively normal (CN) person develops symptoms of AD, he may pass through an intermediate stage, commonly known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI is having two stages, namely StableMCI (SMCI) and Progressive MCI (PMCI). In SMCI, a patient remains stable, whereas, in the case of PMCI, a person gradually develops few symptoms of AD. Several research works are in progress on the detection and classification of AD based on changes in the brain. In this paper, we have analyzed few existing state-of-art works for AD detection and classification, based on different feature extraction approaches. We have summarized the existing research articles with detailed observations. We have also compared the performance and research issues in each of the feature extraction mechanisms and observed that the AD classification using the wavelet transform-based feature extraction approaches might achieve convincing results

Personality Identification from Social Media Using Deep Learning: A Review
Social media helps in sharing of ideas and information among people scattered around the world and thus helps in creating communities, groups, and virtual networks. Identification of personality is significant in many types of applications such as in detecting the mental state or character of a person, predicting job satisfaction, professional and personal relationship success, in recommendation systems. Personality is also an important factor to determine individual variation in thoughts, feelings, and conduct systems. According to the survey of Global social media research in 2018, approximately 3.196 billion social media users are in worldwide. The numbers are estimated to grow rapidly further with the use of mobile smart devices and advancement in technology. Support vector machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), Multilayer perceptron neural network, and convolutional neural network (CNN) are some of the machine learning techniques used for personality identification in the literature review. This paper presents various studies conducted in identifying the personality of social media users with the help of machine learning approaches and the recent studies that targeted to predict the personality of online social media (OSM) users are reviewed
