    This article provides an overview of model predictive control (MPC) frameworks for dynamic operation of nonlinear constrained systems. Dynamic operation is often an integral part of the control objective, ranging from tracking of reference signals to the general economic operation of a plant under online changing time-varying operating conditions. We focus on the particular challenges that arise when dealing with such more general control goals and present methods that have emerged in the literature to address these issues. The goal of this article is to present an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques, providing a diverse toolkit to apply and further develop MPC formulations that can handle the challenges intrinsic to dynamic operation.     Adaptive Control By Regulation-Triggered Batch Least-Squares Estimation of Non-Observable Parameters

    The paper extends a recently proposed indirect, certainty-equivalence, event-triggered adaptive control scheme to the case of non-observable parameters. The extension is achieved by using a novel Batch Least-Squares Identifier (BaLSI), which is activated at the times of the events. The BaLSI guarantees the finite-time asymptotic constancy of the parameter estimates and the fact that the trajectories of the closed-loop system follow the trajectories of the nominal closed-loop system ("nominal" in the sense of the asymptotic parameter estimate, not in the sense of the true unknown parameter). Thus, if the nominal feedback guarantees global asymptotic stability and local exponential stability, then unlike conventional adaptive control, the newly proposed event-triggered adaptive scheme guarantees global asymptotic regulation with a uniform exponential convergence rate. The developed adaptive scheme is tested to a well-known control problem: the state regulation of the wing-rock model.     Nonlinear Flight Control Design Using Backstepping Methodology

    The subject of nonlinear flight control design using backstepping control methodology is investigated in the dissertation research presented here. Control design methods based on nonlinear models of the dynamic system provide higher utility and versatility because the design model more closely matches the physical system behavior. Obtaining requisite model fidelity is only half of the overall design process, however. Design of the nonlinear control loops can lessen the effects of nonlinearity, or even exploit nonlinearity, to achieve higher levels of closed-loop stability, performance, and robustness. The goal of the research is to improve control quality for a general class of strict-feedback dynamic systems and provide flight control architectures to augment the aircraft motion. The research is divided into two parts: theoretical control development for the strict-feedback form of nonlinear dynamic systems and application of the proposed theory for nonlinear flight dynamics. In the first part, the research is built on two components: transforming the nonlinear dynamic model to a canonical strict-feedback form and then applying backstepping control theory to the canonical model. The research considers a process to determine when this transformation is possible, and when it is possible, a systematic process to transfer the model is also considered when practical. When this is not the case, certain modeling assumptions are explored to facilitate the transformation. After achieving the canonical form, a systematic design procedure for formulating a backstepping control law is explored in the research. Starting with the simplest subsystem and ending with the full system, pseudo control concepts based on Lyapunov control functions are used to control each successive subsystem. Typically each pseudo control must be solved from a nonlinear algebraic equation. At the end of this process, the physical control input must be re-expressed in terms of the physical states by eliminating the pseudo control transformations. In the second part, the research focuses on nonlinear control design for flight dynamics of aircraft motion. Some assumptions on aerodynamics of the aircraft are addressed to transform full nonlinear flight dynamics into the canonical strict-feedback form. The assumptions are also analyzed, validated, and compared to show the advantages and disadvantages of the design models. With the achieved models, investigation focuses on formulating the backstepping control laws and provides an advanced control algorithm for nonlinear flight dynamics of the aircraft. Experimental and simulation studies are successfully implemented to validate the proposed control method.     Low Complexity Model Predictive Control of a Diesel Engine Airpath.

    The diesel air path (DAP) system has been traditionally challenging to control due to its highly coupled nonlinear behavior and the need for constraints to be considered for driveability and emissions. An advanced control technology, model predictive control (MPC), has been viewed as a way to handle these challenges, however, current MPC strategies for the DAP are still limited due to the very limited computational resources in engine control units (ECU). A low complexity MPC controller for the DAP system is developed in this dissertation where, by "low complexity," it is meant that the MPC controller achieves tracking and constraint enforcement objectives and can be executed on a modern ECU within 200 microseconds, a computation budget set by Toyota Motor Corporation. First, an explicit MPC design is developed for the DAP. Compared to previous explicit MPC examples for the DAP, a significant reduction in computational complexity is achieved. This complexity reduction is accomplished through, first, a novel strategy of intermittent constraint enforcement. Then, through a novel strategy of gain scheduling explicit MPC, the memory usage of the controller is further reduced and closed-loop tracking performance is improved. Finally, a robust version of the MPC design is developed which is able to enforce constraints in the presence of disturbances without a significant increase in computational complexity compared to non-robust MPC. The ability of the controller to track set-points and enforce constraints is demonstrated in both simulations and experiments. A number of theoretical results pertaining to the gain scheduling strategy is also developed. Second, a nonlinear MPC (NMPC) strategy for the DAP is developed. Through various innovations, a NMPC controller for the DAP is constructed that is not necessarily any more computationally complex than linear explicit MPC and is characterized by a very streamlined process for implementation and calibration. A significant reduction in computational complexity is achieved through the novel combination of Kantorovich's method and constrained NMPC. Zero-offset steady state tracking is achieved through a novel NMPC problem formulation, rate-based NMPC.     Perspectives on the viscoelasticity and flow behavior of entangled linear and branched polymers

    We briefly review the recent advances in the rheology of entangled polymers and identify emerging research trends and outstanding challenges, especially with respect to branched polymers. Emphasis is placed on the role of well-characterized model systems, as well as the synergy of synthesis-characterization, rheometry and modeling/simulations. The theoretical framework for understanding the observed linear and nonlinear rheological phenomena is the tube model which is critically assessed in view of its successes and shortcomings, whereas alternative approaches are briefly discussed. Finally, intriguing experimental findings and controversial issues that merit consistent explanation, such as shear banding instabilities, multiple stress overshoots in transient simple shear and enhanced steady-state elongational viscosity in polymer solutions, are discussed, whereas future directions such as branch point dynamics and anisotropic monomeric friction are outlined.Comment: 25 pages, accepted for publication in Journal of Physics Condensed Matter (August 2015

    A Survey on Physics Informed Reinforcement Learning: Review and Open Problems

    The inclusion of physical information in machine learning frameworks has revolutionized many application areas. This involves enhancing the learning process by incorporating physical constraints and adhering to physical laws. In this work we explore their utility for reinforcement learning applications. We present a thorough review of the literature on incorporating physics information, as known as physics priors, in reinforcement learning approaches, commonly referred to as physics-informed reinforcement learning (PIRL). We introduce a novel taxonomy with the reinforcement learning pipeline as the backbone to classify existing works, compare and contrast them, and derive crucial insights. Existing works are analyzed with regard to the representation/ form of the governing physics modeled for integration, their specific contribution to the typical reinforcement learning architecture, and their connection to the underlying reinforcement learning pipeline stages. We also identify core learning architectures and physics incorporation biases (i.e., observational, inductive and learning) of existing PIRL approaches and use them to further categorize the works for better understanding and adaptation. By providing a comprehensive perspective on the implementation of the physics-informed capability, the taxonomy presents a cohesive approach to PIRL. It identifies the areas where this approach has been applied, as well as the gaps and opportunities that exist. Additionally, the taxonomy sheds light on unresolved issues and challenges, which can guide future research. This nascent field holds great potential for enhancing reinforcement learning algorithms by increasing their physical plausibility, precision, data efficiency, and applicability in real-world scenarios

    Technologisch herausfordernde Transformationsprozesse wie die Energiewende können durch passende Anreizsysteme entscheidend beschleunigt werden. Ziel solcher Anreize ist es hierbei, ein Umfeld idealerweise so zu schaffen, dass das Zusammenspiel aller aus Sicht der beteiligten Wettbewerber individuell optimalen Einzelhandlungen auch global optimal im Sinne eines übergeordneten Großziels ist. Die vorliegende Dissertation schafft einen regelungstechnischen Zugang zur Frage optimaler Anreizsysteme für heutige und zukünftige Stromnetze im Zieldreieck aus Systemstabilität, ökonomischer Effizienz und Netzdienlichkeit. Entscheidende Neuheit des entwickelten Ansatzes ist die Einführung zeitlich wie örtlich differenzierter Echtzeit-Preissignale, die sich aus der Lösung statischer und dynamischer Optimierungsprobleme ergeben. Der Miteinbezug lokal verfügbarer Messinformationen, die konsequente Mitmodellierung des unterlagerten physikalischen Netzes inklusive resistiver Verluste und die durchgängig zeitkontinuierliche Formulierung aller Teilsysteme ebnen den Weg von einer reinen Anreiz-Steuerung hin zu einer echten Anreiz-Regelung. Besonderes Augenmerk der Arbeit liegt in einer durch das allgemeine Unbundling-Gebot bedingten rigorosen Trennung zwischen Markt- und Netzakteuren. Nach umfangreicher Analyse des hierbei entstehenden geschlossenen Regelkreises erfolgt die beispielhafte Anwendung der Regelungsarchitektur für den Aufbau eines neuartigen Echtzeit-Engpassmanagementsystems. Weitere praktische Vorteile des entwickelten Ansatzes im Vergleich zu bestehenden Konzepten werden anhand zweier Fallstudien deutlich. Die port-basierte Systemmodellierung, der Verzicht auf zentralisierte Regeleingriffe und nicht zuletzt die Möglichkeit zur automatischen, dezentralen Selbstregulation aller Preise über das Gesamtnetz hinweg stellen schließlich die problemlose Erweiterbarkeit um zusätzliche optionale Anreizkomponenten sicher
