    New Data on Armadillos (Xenarthra: Dasypodidae) for Central Patagonia, Argentina

    Armadillos represent the most diverse family of xenarthrans. Although many studies have been done on these mammals, several topics, such as their local distribution, natural history, behavioral ecology and conservation, remain poorly known. Chaetophractus villosus and Zaedyus pichiy are the most common armadillos in extra-Andean Patagonia, a vast area in southern Argentina and Chile that encompasses different ecosystems and has been modified by human activities, mainly by sheep grazing. In this work we present new data on the distribution, natural history, conservation, and ecology of C. villosus and Z. pichiy from central Patagonia (Chubut and Río Negro provinces, Argentina). We registered 60 localities for C. villosus and 35 for Z. pichiy that confirm their presence in wide sectors of central Patagonia. Furthermore, we confirmed that these two armadillo species suffer high rates of mortality due to their use as a protein source, hunting by dogs, road traffic, and poisoning, among others. We conclude that their populations are at risk of overexploitation and local extinction. The basic knowledge provided here will be a first step towards the conservation of these characteristic Patagonian mammals.Fil: Abba, Agustin Manuel.     Environmental and climatic proxies for the Cañadón Asfalto and Neuquén basins (Patagonia, Argentina): review of middle to upper jurassic continental and near coastal sequences

    In this review, we include several proxies (sedimentology, palynology, invertebrates) from the Cañadón Asfalto and Neuquén basins, to infer the environments and regional climatic context during the Middle to Late Jurassic of Patagonia. In central Patagonia, early in the Middle Jurassic, and associated with a magmatic arc, began the sedimentary fi lling of Jurassic continental sub-basins in the Cañadón Asfalto Basin. Lacustrine and fl uvio-deltaic sediments, bearing a continental Middle Jurassic palynobiota, correspond to the Las Chacritas Member, while the sediments and palynobiota from the Late Jurassic Puesto Almada Member (both in the Cañadón Asfalto Formation) indicate a palustrine wetland subenvironment immersed within an arid macroenvironment. Paleoinvertebrates (conchostracans and sponges) of this formation suggest wet-dry cycles in the water bodies they inhabited. The sedimentological information together with the continental and coastal palynomorph assemblages of the back arc Neuquén Basin, allowed distinguishing a complete regressive-transgressive sequence for the Middle Jurassic Lajas Formation. For the Upper Jurassic in this basin, the thick gypsum and anhydrite deposits of the evaporitic coastal Auquilco Formation correlate with extended deposits of eolian sandstones corresponding to the Botucatú paleodesert, and a saltmarsh environment is inferred from the palynofl ora. The palynologic associations from both basins indicate a regional warm climate with seasonal aridity. Climatic conditions would have been drier in the continental interior (Cañadón Asfalto Basin), with strongly seasonally distributed temperatures, and moister in the western coast of the continent (Neuquén Basin), during the marine transgressions.Na presente revisão foram incluídos vários proxies (sedimentologia, palinologia, invertebrados), das bacias de Cañadón Asfalto e Neuquén, para inferir o contexto climático regional e ambiental durante o Jurássico Médio e Superior da Patagônia. Na região central da Patagônia, no início do Jurássico Médio, e associado a um arco magmático, começou o preenchimento sedimentar de sub-bacias continentais jurássicas na bacia Cañadón Asfalto. Os sedimentos flúvio-deitaico e lacustres, tendo uma palinobiota continental do Jurássico Médio correspondente ao Membro Las Chacritas, enquanto os sedimentos e a palinobiota do Jurássico Superior do Membro Puesto Almada (ambos na Formação Cañadón Asfalto) indicam um subambiente palustre úmido imerso em um macroambiente árido. Os paleoinvertebrados (conchostráceos e esponjas) desta formação sugerem ciclos úmidos-secos nos corpos de água por eles habitados. A informação sedimentológica juntamente com as assembleias de palinomorfos continentais e costeiros do “back arc” da bacia Neuquén permitiu distinguir uma sequência completa regressiva-transgressiva para o Jurássico Médio da Formação Lajas. Para o Jurássico Superior, os depósitos de anidrita e gesso espessos da Formação Auquilco costeira evaporítica correlacionam-se com depósitos extensos de arenitos eólicos correspondentes ao paleodeserto Botucatu. Um ambiente “saltmarsh” é inferido a partir da palinoflora. As associações palinológicas de ambas as bacias indicam um clima regional quente com aridez sazonal. As condições climáticas teriam sido mais secas no interior continental (bacia Cañadón Asfalto), com temperaturas fortemente distribuídas de forma sazonal, e úmidas na costa ocidental do continente (bacia de Neuquén), durante as transgressões marinhas.Fil: Volkheimer, Wolfang.     Taxonomic studies of the genus Phymaturus (IGUANIA: LIOLAEMIDAE): Description of four new species.

    After the study of a diverse collection of Phymaturus from three Argentinian institutions and additional samples collected in the last two years we discovered several populations of uncertain taxonomic status. Based on 93 morphological characters of squamation, color pattern, gular and nuchal folds, precloacal pores, and morphometric data, we conclude that at least four of those are independent lineages which require formal description. Characters related to sexual dimorphism and dichromatism as well as the ontogenetic change of several others, from juvenile to adult specimens, are described. According to the most recent revision of the genus (Lobo and Quinteros, 2005a) and considering the descriptions made in the last four years, the taxonomic composition of the genus was raised to 23 species. In this study we provide the formal description of four additional new taxa, including their diagnosis and detailed comparisons with other members of their species groups. Two new species belong to the patagonicus group (provinces of Chubut and Rio Negro, in Patagonia between 46° and 41° of latitude) while the other two belong to the palluma group (Neuquén and Catamarca provinces, western Argentina, 39° and 27‑26°30’of latitude respectively). With the exception of one case for which four localities are reported, all new species are restricted to their type localities.     d13C tracing of dissolved inorganic carbon sources in Patagonian rivers (Argentina)

    The main Patagonian rivers (Colorado, Negro, Chubut, Deseado, Coyle, Chico, Santa Cruz and Gallegos) were sampled between September 1995 and November 1998 to determine their chemical and isotopic compositions, the origins of the suspended and dissolved river loads and their inputs to the South Atlantic Ocean. This paper focuses on the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transport and its υ13C isotopic signature. The υ13CDIC values vary between 12Ð8 and 1Ð8‰ and allow one to distinguish two river groups: (i) the Colorado, Negro, Chubut and Santa Cruz, which display the highest values and the lowest seasonal variations; (ii) the Deseado, Coyle, Chico and Gallegos, which show the lowest values and the highest seasonal variations. For the first group, υ13CDIC is mainly controlled by important exchanges between the river waters and atmospheric CO2, due to the presence of lakes and dams. For the second group, υ13CDIC also appears to be controlled by the oxidation of organic carbon, showing a negative relationship between υ13CDIC and the dissolved organic carbon. These biogeochemical processes interfere with the contribution of carbonate and silicate weathering to the riverine DIC and do not allow use of υ13CDIC alone to distinguish these contributions. The annual DIC flux exported by Patagonian Rivers to the South Atlantic Ocean averages 621 ð 109 g. of C, i.e. a specific yield of 2Ð7 g m2 year1. The mean υ13CDIC can be estimated to 4Ð9‰, which is high compared with other rivers of the world

    Dromiciops, nocturnal marsupial genus endemic to the temperate forests of southern South America, is the only living representative of the Order Microbiotheria. Here we study the Siphonapteran fauna of Dromiciops gliroides ?monito del monte? from Los Alerces National Park, Chubut Province. We also present the southernmost record for Argentina of the association between D. gliroides and the fleas Plocopsylla (Schrammapsylla) diana and Chiliopsylla allophyla allophyla, registering for the first time both Siphonaptera in Chubut Province. Our result extends and adds to current parasite biodiversity for Patagonia and contributes new information about the ecology of D. gliroides in southern Argentina.Dromiciops gliroides es un marsupial nocturno endémico de los bosques templados de Sudamérica y el único representante viviente del Orden Microbiotheria.     Nuevo registro de un cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus) varado y una revisión de varamientos en las costas de Argentina continental

    Presentamos un nuevo registro de un cachalote, con notas sobre la dieta, la determinación de edad y la presencia de parásitos, junto con una revisión de los varamientos a lo largo de toda la costa continental argentina. El animal varado fue un macho maduro de 64+ años. Este es el individuo más longevo registrado para esta especie en el Atlántico Sudoccidental. En el contenido estomacal se colectaron 302 picos inferiores de cefalópodos. Los únicos parásitos presentes fueron cestodes en la capa de grasa; no se encotraron helmintos gastrointestinales.We present a new record of sperm whale with notes on diet, age determination and a review of strandings along the continental Argentine coast. A complete necropsy was made in the field, and morphometric data were taken. The specimen stranded was a mature male of 64+ years old. This is the oldest specimen determined for a sperm whale in the Southwest Atlantic coast. In the stomach contents a total of 302 cephalopod lower beaks were recovered.     Beak deformities in north Patagonian birds

    Within the last decade, many individuals of several bird species with abnormal and strange beaks deformationshave been reported from Alaska, United States, and from United Kingdom and Ireland. Different forms of beakdeformities were observed, but the causes of these abnormalities are unknown. We report beak deformities in twospecies of birds in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina: Austral Thrush (Turdus falcklandii) and Patagonian Mockingbird(Mimus patagonicus). Between 2013 and 2016, we captured individuals of White‐crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps, N= 305), Rufous‐collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis, N = 119), Austral Thrush (N = 100), Black‐chinned Siskin (Spinusbarbata, N = 64), Patagonian Sierra‐Finch (Phrygilus patagonicus, N = 48) and Gray‐hooded Sierra‐Finch (Phrygilusgayi, N = 40) in surroundings of Esquel city, located in western Patagonia, Chubut province, and quantified the prevalenceof beak deformities. Only adult Austral Thrushes (5 out of 78; 6.41%) showed abnormal beaks. Neither juvenilethrushes (N = 22) nor the other five species showed beak deformations. Austral Thrushes with beak deformationswere also observed and photographed (but not captured) in other areas around the city. We also photographed onePatagonian Mockingbird with an abnormal beak near Las Plumas Village, Chubut province. Beak deformities variedfrom light to severe, and also in their form. Most of them were characterized by an elongated and often decurvedupper mandible, producing an overbite; in other individuals both mandibles were elongated and sometimes crossedor had a pronounced gap. Most affected birds showed signs of improper preening, and one of them was malnourished.All of these characteristics are similar to those described for birds affected by avian keratin disorder in NorthAmerica. Further research is needed to detect potential presence of other species with beak deformities in Patagonia,to find out possible causes of such deformities, and to determine whether these anomalies are associated with naturalhabitats or urban environments.Fil: Gorosito, Cristian Andrés.     We provide new geographic records for Pristidactylus nigroiugulus Cei, Scolaro & Videla, 2001 from Argentina. We present the first record for Santa Cruz province and the southernmost records of the species based on lizards collected in the austral summers of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014.     Feeding Behavior of Spurilla sp. (Mollusca: Opisthobranchia) with a Description of the Kleptocnidae Sequestered from Its Sea Anemone Prey

    Feeding behavior of Spurilla sp. (Mollusca: Opisthobranchia) with a description of the kleptocnidae sequestered from its sea anemone prey. Zoological Studies 51(7): 905-912. Cnidocysts are sequestered from cnidarian prey by aeolid nudibranchs and stored in the tips of their appendages (cerata). The kleptocnidae of 11 specimens of Spurilla sp. are described in detail. The types and relative abundances of prey cnidocysts in nudibranch cerata were highly variable, suggesting exclusive anemone consumption. Spirocysts and several types of microbasic p-mastigophores, microbasic b-mastigophores, and basitrichs were found in external and internal tissues of sea anemone prey. This is the 1st report of predation of aeolid Spurilla sp. on the sea anemones Antholoba achates, Metridium senile lobatum, and Parabunodactis imperfecta from the rocky intertidal of Patagonia (Chubut Province, Argentina) and on Anthothoe chilensis and Tricnidactis errans at Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). Photographs and digital videos of aeolidacean feeding behavior were recorded in situ and in aquaria.
