A general approach to synthesis and analysis of quasi-resonant converters
A method for systematic synthesis of quasi-resonant (QR) topologies by addition of resonant elements to a parent pulse-width modulation (PWM) converter network is proposed. It is found that there are six QR classes with two resonant elements, including two novel classes. More complex QR converters can be generated by a recursive application of the synthesis method. Topological definitions of all known and novel QR classes follow directly from the synthesis method and topological properties of PWM parents. The synthesis of QR converters is augmented by a study of possible switch realizations and operating modes. In particular, it is demonstrated that a controllable rectifier can be used to accomplish the constant-frequency control in all QR classes. Links between the QR converters and the underlying PWM networks are extended to general DC and small-signal AC models in which the model of the PWM parent is explicitly exposed. Results of steady-state analyses of selected QR classes and operating modes include boundaries of operating regions, DC characteristics, a comparison of switching transitions and switch stresses, and a discussion of relevant design trade-offs
Test Case Generation for Object-Oriented Imperative Languages in CLP
Testing is a vital part of the software development process. Test Case
Generation (TCG) is the process of automatically generating a collection of
test cases which are applied to a system under test. White-box TCG is usually
performed by means of symbolic execution, i.e., instead of executing the
program on normal values (e.g., numbers), the program is executed on symbolic
values representing arbitrary values. When dealing with an object-oriented (OO)
imperative language, symbolic execution becomes challenging as, among other
things, it must be able to backtrack, complex heap-allocated data structures
should be created during the TCG process and features like inheritance, virtual
invocations and exceptions have to be taken into account. Due to its inherent
symbolic execution mechanism, we pursue in this paper that Constraint Logic
Programming (CLP) has a promising unexploited application field in TCG. We will
support our claim by developing a fully CLP-based framework to TCG of an OO
imperative language, and by assessing it on a corresponding implementation on a
set of challenging Java programs. A unique characteristic of our approach is
that it handles all language features using only CLP and without the need of
developing specific constraint operators (e.g., to model the heap)
Future capacity growth of energy technologies: are scenarios consistent with historical evidence?
Future scenarios of the energy system under greenhouse gas emission constraints depict dramatic growth in a range of energy technologies. Technological growth dynamics observed historically provide a useful comparator for these future trajectories. We find that historical time series data reveal a consistent relationship between how much a technologyâs cumulative installed capacity grows, and how long this growth takes. This relationship between extent (how much) and duration (for how long) is consistent across both energy supply and end-use technologies, and both established and emerging technologies. We then develop and test an approach for using this historical relationship to assess technological trajectories in future scenarios. Our approach for âlearning from the pastâ contributes to the assessment and verification of integrated assessment and energy-economic models used to generate quantitative scenarios. Using data on power generation technologies from two such models, we also find a consistent extent - duration relationship across both technologies and scenarios. This relationship describes future low carbon technological growth in the power sector which appears to be conservative relative to what has been evidenced historically. Specifically, future extents of capacity growth are comparatively low given the lengthy time duration of that growth. We treat this finding with caution due to the low number of data points. Yet it remains counter-intuitive given the extremely rapid growth rates of certain low carbon technologies under stringent emission constraints. We explore possible reasons for the apparent scenario conservatism, and find parametric or structural conservatism in the underlying models to be one possible explanation
Analysis and Application of Transmission Line Conductors
Skin effect is usually a concern reserved for radio frequency design and for high current conductors used in utility power distribution. Proximity effect between adjacent conductors has traditionally been a concern for the design of magnetic windings and other applications involving wire bundles. The rise in the ubiquity of high speed bit streams and other signals of very wide bandwidth has broadened the range of applicable contexts and increased the need to account for such effects. This
is especially true for transmission lines used to interconnect critical signal paths in applications ranging from microelectronic devices to the signal integrity of printed circuit traces and implementation of system cabling.
Optimal conductor design is obviously fundamental to transmission line performance. Researchers have paid considerable attention to the topic but the results are scattered throughout the literature. This thesis collected information on extant conductor designs, and the theoretical considerations behind each solution. A detailed analysis of current flâĄow in a conducting half-space was included as a foundation.
The conductor types discussed were solid cylindrical, rectangular, ribbonoid, bimetallic, tubular, laminated, litz, and stranded constructions. Discussions of the performance of stranded shields and conductor roughness e€ects were included for completeness of understanding
LAND ALLOCATION IN THE PRESENCE OF ESTIMATION RISK
Estimation risk occurs when parameters relevant for decision making are uncertain. Bayes'Ăâ criterion is consistent with expected-utility maximization in the presence of estimation risk. This article examines optimal (BayesĂâ') land allocations and land allocations obtained using the traditional plug-in approach and two alternative decision rules. BayesĂâ' allocations are much better economically than the other allocations when there are few sample observations relative to activities. Calculation of certainty equivalent returns (CERs) with estimation risk is also discussed and illustrated. CERs are typically (and incorrectly) calculated with the plug-in approach. LOX/hydrocarbon rocket engine analytical design methodology development and validation. Volume 2: Appendices
This final report includes a discussion of the work accomplished during the period from Dec. 1988 through Nov. 1991. The objective of the program was to assemble existing performance and combustion stability models into a usable design methodology capable of designing and analyzing high-performance and stable LOX/hydrocarbon booster engines. The methodology was then used to design a validation engine. The capabilities and validity of the methodology were demonstrated using this engine in an extensive hot fire test program. The engine used LOX/RP-1 propellants and was tested over a range of mixture ratios, chamber pressures, and acoustic damping device configurations. This volume contains time domain and frequency domain stability plots which indicate the pressure perturbation amplitudes and frequencies from approximately 30 tests of a 50K thrust rocket engine using LOX/RP-1 propellants over a range of chamber pressures from 240 to 1750 psia with mixture ratios of from 1.2 to 7.5. The data is from test configurations which used both bitune and monotune acoustic cavities and from tests with no acoustic cavities. The engine had a length of 14 inches and a contraction ratio of 2.0 using a 7.68 inch diameter injector. The data was taken from both stable and unstable tests. All combustion instabilities were spontaneous in the first tangential mode. Although stability bombs were used and generated overpressures of approximately 20 percent, no tests were driven unstable by the bombs. The stability instrumentation included six high-frequency Kistler transducers in the combustion chamber, a high-frequency Kistler transducer in each propellant manifold, and tri-axial accelerometers. Performance data is presented, both characteristic velocity efficiencies and energy release efficiencies, for those tests of sufficient duration to record steady state values
Helicopter mathematical models and control law development for handling qualities research
Progress made in joint NASA/Army research concerning rotorcraft flight-dynamics modeling, design methodologies for rotorcraft flight-control laws, and rotorcraft parameter identification is reviewed. Research into these interactive disciplines is needed to develop the analytical tools necessary to conduct flying qualities investigations using both the ground-based and in-flight simulators, and to permit an efficient means of performing flight test evaluation of rotorcraft flying qualities for specification compliance. The need for the research is particularly acute for rotorcraft because of their mathematical complexity, high order dynamic characteristics, and demanding mission requirements. The research in rotorcraft flight-dynamics modeling is pursued along two general directions: generic nonlinear models and nonlinear models for specific rotorcraft. In addition, linear models are generated that extend their utilization from 1-g flight to high-g maneuvers and expand their frequency range of validity for the design analysis of high-gain flight control systems. A variety of methods ranging from classical frequency-domain approaches to modern time-domain control methodology that are used in the design of rotorcraft flight control laws is reviewed. Also reviewed is a study conducted to investigate the design details associated with high-gain, digital flight control systems for combat rotorcraft. Parameter identification techniques developed for rotorcraft applications are reviewed
