    Research trends on CAPTCHA: A systematic literature

    The advent of technology has crept into virtually all sectors and this has culminated in automated processes making use of the Internet in executing various tasks and actions. Web services have now become the trend when it comes to providing solutions to mundane tasks. However, this development comes with the bottleneck of authenticity and intent of users. Providers of these Web services, whether as a platform, as a software or as an Infrastructure use various human interaction proof’s (HIPs) to validate authenticity and intent of its users. Completely automated public turing test to tell computer and human apart (CAPTCHA), a form of IDS in web services is advantageous. Research into CAPTCHA can be grouped into two -CAPTCHA development and CAPTCH recognition. Selective learning and convolutionary neural networks (CNN) as well as deep convolutionary neural network (DCNN) have become emerging trends in both the development and recognition of CAPTCHAs. This paper reviews critically over fifty article publications that shows the current trends in the area of the CAPTCHA scheme, its development and recognition mechanisms and the way forward in helping to ensure a robust and yet secure CAPTCHA development in guiding future research endeavor in the subject domain

    Mothers\u27 Adaptation to Caring for a New Baby

    To date, most research on parents\u27 adjustment after adding a new baby to their family unit has focused on mothers\u27 initial transition to parenthood. This past research has examined changes in mothers\u27 marital satisfaction and perceived well-being across the transition, and has compared their prenatal expectations to their postnatal experiences. This project assessed first-time and experienced mothers\u27 stress and satisfaction associated with parenting, their adjustment to competing demands, and their perceived well-being longitudinally before and after the birth of a baby. Additionally, how maternal and child-related variables influenced the trajectory of mothers\u27 postnatal adaptation was assessed. These variables included mothers\u27 age, their education level, their prenatal expectations and postnatal experiences concerning shared infant care, their satisfaction with the division of infant caregiving, and their perceptions of their infant\u27s temperament. Mothers (N = 136) completed an online survey during their third trimester and additional online surveys when their baby was approximately 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks old.;First-time mothers prenatally expected a more equal division of infant caregiving between themselves and their partners than did experienced mothers. Both first-time and experienced mothers reported less assistance from their partners than they had prenatally expected. Additionally, they experienced almost twice as many violated expectations than met expectations. Growth curve modeling revealed that a cubic function of time best fit the trajectory of mothers\u27 postnatal parenting satisfaction. Mothers reported less parenting satisfaction at 4 weeks, compared to 2 and 6 weeks, and reported stability in their satisfaction between 6 and 8 weeks. A quadratic function of time best fit the trajectories of mothers\u27 postnatal parenting stress and adjustment to the demands of their baby. Mothers reported more stress and difficulty adjusting to their baby\u27s demands at 4 and 6 weeks, compared to 2 and 8 weeks. A linear function of time best fit the trajectories of mothers\u27 adjustment to home demands, generalized state anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Mothers reported less difficulty meeting home demands, less generalized anxiety, and fewer depressive symptoms across the postnatal period. Mothers\u27 violated expectations were associated with level differences in all aspects of mothers\u27 postnatal adaptation except their adjustment to home demands. Specifically, more violated expectations, in number or in magnitude, were associated with poorer postnatal adaptation. Mothers\u27 violated expectations were not associated with the slope of mothers\u27 postnatal adaptation trajectories. Exploratory models revealed that other maternal and child-related variables also impacted the level and slope of mothers\u27 postnatal adaptation.;Overall, first-time and experienced mothers were more similar than different in regards to their postnatal adaptation. This study suggests that prior findings concerning adults\u27 initial transition to parenthood may also apply to adults during each addition of a new baby into the family unit. Additionally, mothers who reported less of a mismatch between their expectations and experiences concerning shared infant care had fewer issues adapting the postnatal period. Thus, methods to increase the assistance mothers receive from their partner should be sought. Limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are also discussed

    Enhancing Online Security with Image-based Captchas

    Given the data loss, productivity, and financial risks posed by security breaches, there is a great need to protect online systems from automated attacks. Completely Automated Public Turing Tests to Tell Computers and Humans Apart, known as CAPTCHAs, are commonly used as one layer in providing online security. These tests are intended to be easily solvable by legitimate human users while being challenging for automated attackers to successfully complete. Traditionally, CAPTCHAs have asked users to perform tasks based on text recognition or categorization of discrete images to prove whether or not they are legitimate human users. Over time, the efficacy of these CAPTCHAs has been eroded by improved optical character recognition, image classification, and machine learning techniques that can accurately solve many CAPTCHAs at rates approaching those of humans. These CAPTCHAs can also be difficult to complete using the touch-based input methods found on widely used tablets and smartphones.;This research proposes the design of CAPTCHAs that address the shortcomings of existing implementations. These CAPTCHAs require users to perform different image-based tasks including face detection, face recognition, multimodal biometrics recognition, and object recognition to prove they are human. These are tasks that humans excel at but which remain difficult for computers to complete successfully. They can also be readily performed using click- or touch-based input methods, facilitating their use on both traditional computers and mobile devices.;Several strategies are utilized by the CAPTCHAs developed in this research to enable high human success rates while ensuring negligible automated attack success rates. One such technique, used by fgCAPTCHA, employs image quality metrics and face detection algorithms to calculate a fitness value representing the simulated performance of human users and automated attackers, respectively, at solving each generated CAPTCHA image. A genetic learning algorithm uses these fitness values to determine customized generation parameters for each CAPTCHA image. Other approaches, including gradient descent learning, artificial immune systems, and multi-stage performance-based filtering processes, are also proposed in this research to optimize the generated CAPTCHA images.;An extensive RESTful web service-based evaluation platform was developed to facilitate the testing and analysis of the CAPTCHAs developed in this research. Users recorded over 180,000 attempts at solving these CAPTCHAs using a variety of devices. The results show the designs created in this research offer high human success rates, up to 94.6\% in the case of aiCAPTCHA, while ensuring resilience against automated attacks

Collecting and recontextualizing writings from the last twenty years of John Cayley's research-based practice of electronic literature, Grammalepsy introduces a theory of aesthetic linguistic practice developed specifically for the making and critical appreciation of language art in digital media. As he examines the cultural shift away from traditional print literature and the changes in our culture of reading, Cayley coins the term “grammalepsy” to inform those processes by which we make, understand, and appreciate language. Framing his previous writings within the overall context of this theory, Cayley eschews the tendency of literary critics and writers to reduce aesthetic linguistic making-even when it has multimedia affordances-to “writing.” Instead, Cayley argues that electronic literature and digital language art allow aesthetic language makers to embrace a compositional practice inextricably involved with digital media, which cannot be reduced to print-dependent textuality

    Procedural Films: Algorithmic Affect in Research Media Art Practice

    This thesis explores the political aesthetics of ‘procedural films’—media works that use generative algorithmic procedures and manifest as moving images. In contrast to long-held techno-positivist understandings of generative art, the thesis reframes procedural films as a critical media art practice aiming to understand the ‘procedure’ as an affective engine of moving image experience. It employs an interdisciplinary approach that borrows from materialist theories of media, experimental film, artificial life and computational culture, and draws on my practices as artist and curator. These processes of making, curating and experiencing serve as enacted research, as a scalable architecture of thinking through and thinking with the technical media. The thesis proposes a conceptual framework for exploring procedural films as techno-cultural artefacts, addressing the ‘apparatus’, the affective space-time of their viewing and their sociopolitical operation. It proposes that algorithmic autonomy brings an affective renegotiation of the traditional roles of the spectator and the moving image, instead seeing it as a complex entanglement of human and non-human agencies, computational temporalities and generative procedures. Furthermore, it addresses procedural mediation and automation as a part of the political aesthetics of media art, exploring the techno-capitalist commodification of attention, time and images. The thesis investigates two case studies—screensaver and game engine—as procedural apparatuses.     Understanding Google: Search Engines and the Changing Nature of Access, Thought and Knowledge within a Global Context

    This thesis explores the impact of search engines within contemporary digital culture and, in particular, focuses on the social, cultural, and philosophical influence of Google. Search engines are deeply enmeshed with other recent developments in digital culture; therefore, in addressing their impact these intersections must be recognised, while highlighting the technological and social specificity of search engines. Also important is acknowledging the way that certain institutions, in particular Google, have shaped the web and wider culture around a particular set of economic incentives that have far-reaching consequences for contemporary digital culture. This thesis argues that to understand search engines requires a recognition of its contemporary context, while also acknowledging that Google’s quest to “organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful” is part of a much older and broader discourse. Balancing these two viewpoints is important; Google is shaping public discourse on a global scale with unprecedentedly extensive consequences. However, many of the issues addressed by this thesis would remain centrally important even if Google declared bankruptcy or if search engines were abandoned for a different technology. Search engines are a specific technological response to a particular cultural environment; however, their social function and technical operation are embedded within a historical relationship to enquiry and inscription that stretches back to antiquity. This thesis addresses the following broad research questions, while at each stage specifically addressing the role and influence of search engines: how do individuals interrogate and navigate the world around them? How do technologies and social institutions facilitate how we think and remember? How culturally situated is knowledge; are there epistemological truths that transcend social environments? How does technological expansion fit within wider questions of globalisation? How do technological discourses shape the global flows of information and capital? These five questions map directly onto the five chapters of this thesis. Much of the existing study of search engines has been focused on small-scale evaluation, which either addresses Google’s day-by-day algorithmic changes or poses relatively isolated disciplinary questions. Therefore, not only is the number of academics, technicians, and journalists attending to search engines relatively small, given the centrality of search engines to digital culture, but much of the knowledge that is produced becomes outdated with algorithmic changes or the shifting strategies of companies. This thesis ties these focused concerns to wider issues, with a view to encourage and facilitate further enquiry.This thesis explores the impact of Google’s search engine within contemporary digital culture. Search engines have been studied in various disciplines, for example information retrieval, computer science, law, and new media, yet much of this work remains fixed within disciplinary boundaries. The approach of this thesis is to draw on work from a number of areas in order to link a technical understanding of how search engines function with a wider cultural and philosophical context. In particular, this thesis draws on critical theory in order to attend to the convergence of language, programming, and culture on a global scale. The chapter outline is as follows. Chapter one compares search engine queries to traditional questions. The chapter draws from information retrieval research to provide a technical framework that is brought into contact with philosophy and critical theory, including Plato and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Chapter two investigates search engines as memory aids, deploying a history of memory and exploring practices within oral cultures and mnemonic techniques such as the Ars Memoria. This places search engines within a longer historical context, while drawing on contemporary insights from the philosophy and science of cognition. Chapter three addresses Google’s Autocomplete functionality and chapter four explores the contextual nature of results in order to highlight how different characteristics of users are used to personalise access to the web. These chapters address Google’s role within a global context and the implications for identity and community online. Finally, chapter five explores how Google’s method of generating revenue, through advertising, has a social impact on the web as a whole, particularly when considered through the lens of contemporary Post-Fordist accounts of capitalism. Throughout, this thesis develops a framework for attending to algorithmic cultures and outlines the specific influence that Google has had on the web and continues to have at a global scale.Arts and Humanities Research Counci

    Just a “Click” away from evidence-based online breast cancer information, advice and support provided by a specialist nurse: An ethnonetnographic study

    Breast cancer has had, and will continue to have, a devastating impact on the lives of many Australian women, their families, friends and the wider community. The concomitant treatment of this disease places a considerable burden on the health care system and the supporters of the person diagnosed with this disease. While there are many government and non-government organisations that provide treatment and support services for the person with breast cancer, these services are usually provided in person either in the home or at the organisation’s offices. This study extended the information advice and support aspects of these services to the online or Internet based realm via the design and development of a breast cancer focused online support community www.breastcancerclick.com.au and explored the role of the expert nurse through the employment of a specialist breast care nurse as a member, moderator and health professional within this online community. This study used an ethnonetnographic approach, including online (on the Internet) and offline (face-to-face) methods, to explore the role of the specialist breast care nurse within the online, breast cancer support, community. The study was comprised of three phases, Phase One, the offline and online identification of the information, advice and support needs of Western Australian women with breast cancer and their Internet use; development of a website designed to meet those needs and to foster the development of an online support community; Phase Two, the employment and introduction of a specialist breast care nurse as a member and provider of evidence-based information, advice and support for online community members; Phase Three, the online and offline collection of data relevant to the role of the specialist breast care nurse within the online support community. The identification of the expert nurse as a linchpin in the patient’s care and communication has implications for future nursing practice and curricula as well as consumers of health care. Recommendations arose from the findings in relation to further research, nursing practice, education these recommendations indicate an innovative extension to expert nursing practice and together the elementary guidelines for health professional when developing an illness specific online support community foreshadow a future direction for nursing, in line with the digital age
