    The Impact of IPv6 on Penetration Testing

    In this paper we discuss the impact the use of IPv6 has on remote penetration testing of servers and web applications. Several modifications to the penetration testing process are proposed to accommodate IPv6. Among these modifications are ways of performing fragmentation attacks, host discovery and brute-force protection. We also propose new checks for IPv6-specific vulnerabilities, such as bypassing firewalls using extension headers and reaching internal hosts through available transition mechanisms. The changes to the penetration testing process proposed in this paper can be used by security companies to make their penetration testing process applicable to IPv6 targets

    Formal Analysis of Vulnerabilities of Web Applications Based on SQL Injection (Extended Version)

    We present a formal approach that exploits attacks related to SQL Injection (SQLi) searching for security flaws in a web application. We give a formal representation of web applications and databases, and show that our formalization effectively exploits SQLi attacks. We implemented our approach in a prototype tool called SQLfast and we show its efficiency on real-world case studies, including the discovery of an attack on Joomla! that no other tool can find

    Detection of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Query Injection Attacks in Web Applications

    The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is a common protocol used in organizations for Directory Service. LDAP is popular because of its features such as representation of data objects in hierarchical form, being open source and relying on TCP/IP, which is necessary for Internet access. However, with LDAP being used in a large number of web applications, different types of LDAP injection attacks are becoming common. The idea behind LDAP injection attacks is to take advantage of an application not validating inputs before being used as part of LDAP queries. An attacker can provide inputs that may result in alteration of intended LDAP query structure. LDAP injection attacks can lead to various types of security breaches including (i) Login Bypass, (ii) Information Disclosure, (iii) Privilege Escalation, and (iv) Information Alteration. Despite many research efforts focused on traditional SQL Injection attacks, most of the proposed techniques cannot be suitably applied for mitigating LDAP injection attacks due to syntactic and semantic differences between LDAP and SQL queries. Many implemented web applications remain vulnerable to LDAP injection attacks. In particular, there has been little attention for testing web applications to detect the presence of LDAP query injection attacks. The aim of this thesis is two folds: First, study various types of LDAP injection attacks and vulnerabilities reported in the literature. The planned research is to critically examine and evaluate existing injection mitigation techniques using a set of open source applications reported to be vulnerable to LDAP query injection attacks. Second, propose an approach to detect LDAP injection attacks by generating test cases when developing secure web applications. In particular, the thesis focuses on specifying signatures for detecting LDAP injection attack types using Object Constraint Language (OCL) and evaluates the proposed approach using PHP web applications. We also measure the effectiveness of generated test cases using a metric named Mutation Score

    Mouse Phenome Database

    The Mouse Phenome Database (MPD; http://www.jax.org/phenome) is an open source, web-based repository of phenotypic and genotypic data on commonly used and genetically diverse inbred strains of mice and their derivatives. MPD is also a facility for query, analysis and in silico hypothesis testing. Currently MPD contains about 1400 phenotypic measurements contributed by research teams worldwide, including phenotypes relevant to human health such as cancer susceptibility, aging, obesity, susceptibility to infectious diseases, atherosclerosis, blood disorders and neurosensory disorders. Electronic access to centralized strain data enables investigators to select optimal strains for many systems-based research applications, including physiological studies, drug and toxicology testing, modeling disease processes and complex trait analysis. The ability to select strains for specific research applications by accessing existing phenotype data can bypass the need to (re)characterize strains, precluding major investments of time and resources. This functionality, in turn, accelerates research and leverages existing community resources. Since our last NAR reporting in 2007, MPD has added more community-contributed data covering more phenotypic domains and implemented several new tools and features, including a new interactive Tool Demo available through the MPD homepage (quick link: http://phenome.jax.org/phenome/trytools)
