Business process quality measurement using advances in static code analysis

Business process models play an important role in the life of a company. Resemblances between software programs and business processes inspired several researchers to adapt software metrics from the field of static code analysis to help designers to build more effective and understandable processes. This paper aims to add recent advances in software quality measurement such as benchmarking and ISO/IEC 25010 standard based quality models to business process quality measurement. These techniques were proved to be very useful in software engineering both for managers and developers; moreover, they can be easily adopted to business process workflows. We focused on a specific type of flowchart called event-driven process chain (EPC), because in an EPC the activities are very often managed by software systems and our assumption is that the quality of these software systems affects the quality of the EPC itself. The presented business process quality model also uses the quality and test coverage metrics of these software systems besides business process metrics

DESIGN AND DELIVERY OF ELECTRONIC SERVICES: IMPLICATIONS FOR CUSTOMER VALUE IN ELECTRONIC FOOD RETAILING

    Get PDF
Electronic food retailers can satisfy their customers more effectively if they understand how this particular market works. As in other service segments, the emergence of electronic business-to-customer services in the retail food industry poses questions for managers about the design of new food retailing services and the redesign of existing services for delivery through electronic channels. Important topics include characteristics of electronic service offerings, the typical operational configurations used to deliver electronic services, and the ways in which they relate to the effectiveness of electronic service delivery. We address this issue by developing a product-process matrix for understanding and analyzing electronic retailing services in general. We tailor the matrix to food retailing in particular. The product-process matrix allows electronic food retailers to determine in advance what features they need in a web site to serve their chosen market effectively.Consumer/Household Economics, Marketing, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

Exploring Maintainability Assurance Research for Service- and Microservice-Based Systems: Directions and Differences

To ensure sustainable software maintenance and evolution, a diverse set of activities and concepts like metrics, change impact analysis, or antipattern detection can be used. Special maintainability assurance techniques have been proposed for service- and microservice-based systems, but it is difficult to get a comprehensive overview of this publication landscape. We therefore conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) to collect and categorize maintainability assurance approaches for service-oriented architecture (SOA) and microservices. Our search strategy led to the selection of 223 primary studies from 2007 to 2018 which we categorized with a threefold taxonomy: a) architectural (SOA, microservices, both), b) methodical (method or contribution of the study), and c) thematic (maintainability assurance subfield). We discuss the distribution among these categories and present different research directions as well as exemplary studies per thematic category. The primary finding of our SLR is that, while very few approaches have been suggested for microservices so far (24 of 223, ?11%), we identified several thematic categories where existing SOA techniques could be adapted for the maintainability assurance of microservices

Predicting regression test failures using genetic algorithm-selected dynamic performance analysis metrics

    Get PDF
A novel framework for predicting regression test failures is proposed. The basic principle embodied in the framework is to use performance analysis tools to capture the runtime behaviour of a program as it executes each test in a regression suite. The performance information is then used to build a dynamically predictive model of test outcomes. Our framework is evaluated using a genetic algorithm for dynamic metric selection in combination with state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers. We show that if a program is modified and some tests subsequently fail, then it is possible to predict with considerable accuracy which of the remaining tests will also fail which can be used to help prioritise tests in time constrained testing environments

Using Static Analysis and Static Measurement for Industrial Software Quality Evaluation

Business organizations that outsource software development need to evaluate the quality of the code delivered by suppliers. In this paper, we illustrate an experience in setting up and using a toolset for evaluating code quality for a company that outsources software development. The selected tools perform static code analysis and static measurement, and provide evidence of possible quality issues. To verify whether the issues reported by tools are associated to real problems, code inspections were carried out. The combination of automated analysis and inspections proved effective, in that several types of defects were identified. Based on our findings, the business company was able to learn what are the most frequent and dangerous types of defects that affect the acquired code: this knowledge is now being used on a regular basis to perform focused verification activities
