    Designing Information System To Support Business Process Improvement In A Small-Mid Size Bottled Drinking Water Industry

    Due to inefficiencies of the business processes in small-mid size of bottled drinking water industries, it is necessary to improve them. The improvements are carried out in business processes of production, warehouse, delivery, marketing, and finance departments. The main causes of the inefficiencies are the inefficiencies of the business process itself and that the business processes of those departments were not integrated. This paper is concerned with designing information system to support for the integration of those departments. First, we mapped the business process of each department using flow diagram. Then analyze the inefficiencies of each department. Next, we redesign the business processes and standardize them. The next step is integrating the business processes by designing the information system. We design the information system modular. The modules are marketing module, production module, logistic module and finance module. Data Flow Diagram (DFD) is used to model the system. Relational database management system (RDBMS) is used to design the database. User interfaces are built to ease in using the program application. The outputs of the information system are reports and documents in monitor screen view and in printing. The validation showed that the information system designed can support the business process improvements. Design/methodology/approach - ERP and CRM systems are analysed with the resource-based view theory and measured by their impact on business value, having in consideration the moderation of system and process integration. The model was tested and analysed with data collected by Microsoft, from firms that have adopted both ERP and CRM systems in their organisation. Findings - ERP system is found to be an important asset to business value, but CRM systems' impact on business value is found to be not significant. System integration as moderator of ERP or CRM system is found to be not significant but has a positive and significant impact on business value. For process integration, the study finds that it is significant only when moderating the CRM system variable. Research limitations/implications - The model shows that the moderating effects of system and process integration are important variables for understanding the joint business value of ERP and CRM. Practical implications - Adopting an ERP system and ensuring system integration provides a direct impact on business value. In order for a CRM system to have a positive impact on business value, process integration with ERP system must be ensured. Originality/value - This study provides new knowledge on how ERP and CRM systems used together may positively influence value from IT investments, and how systems integration and process integration provide business value.authorsversionpublishe

    A data warehouse is a single data store, where data from multiple data sources is integrated for online business analytical processing (OLAP) of an entire organisation. The rationale being single and integrated is to ensure a consistent view of the organisational business performance independent from different angels of business perspectives. Due to its wide coverage of subjects, data warehouse design is a highly complex, lengthy and error-prone process. Furthermore, the business analytical tasks change over time, which results in changes in the requirements for the OLAP systems. Thus, data warehouse and OLAP systems are rather dynamic and the design process is continuous. In this thesis, we propose a method that is integrated, formal and application-tailored to overcome the complexity problem, deal with the system dynamics, improve the quality of the system and the chance of success. Our method comprises three important parts: the general ASMs method with types, the application tailored design framework for data warehouse and OLAP, and the schema integration method with a set of provably correct refinement rules. By using the ASM method, we are able to model both data and operations in a uniform conceptual framework, which enables us to design an integrated approach for data warehouse and OLAP design. The freedom given by the ASM method allows us to model the system at an abstract level that is easy to understand for both users and designers. More specifically, the language allows us to use the terms from the user domain not biased by the terms used in computer systems. The pseudo-code like transition rules, which gives the simplest form of operational semantics in ASMs, give the closeness to programming languages for designers to understand. Furthermore, these rules are rooted in mathematics to assist in improving the quality of the system design. By extending the ASMs with types, the modelling language is tailored for data warehouse with the terms that are well developed for data-intensive applications, which makes it easy to model the schema evolution as refinements in the dynamic data warehouse design. By providing the application-tailored design framework, we break down the design complexity by business processes (also called subjects in data warehousing) and design concerns. By designing the data warehouse by subjects, our method resembles Kimball's "bottom-up" approach. However, with the schema integration method, our method resolves the stovepipe issue of the approach. By building up a data warehouse iteratively in an integrated framework, our method not only results in an integrated data warehouse, but also resolves the issues of complexity and delayed ROI (Return On Investment) in Inmon's "top-down" approach. By dealing with the user change requests in the same way as new subjects, and modelling data and operations explicitly in a three-tier architecture, namely the data sources, the data warehouse and the OLAP (online Analytical Processing), our method facilitates dynamic design with system integrity. By introducing a notion of refinement specific to schema evolution, namely schema refinement, for capturing the notion of schema dominance in schema integration, we are able to build a set of correctness-proven refinement rules. By providing the set of refinement rules, we simplify the designers's work in correctness design verification. Nevertheless, we do not aim for a complete set due to the fact that there are many different ways for schema integration, and neither a prescribed way of integration to allow designer favored design. Furthermore, given its °exibility in the process, our method can be extended for new emerging design issues easily

    Strategic Business Requirements for Master Data Management Systems

    Master Data Management (MDM) is of increasing importance because it is seen as a promising approach in companies torespond to a number of strategic business requirements, such as complying with an increasing number of regulations,supporting internal and external business process integration, and establishing a “360-degree-view on the customer”. As aresult, software vendors such as IBM, Oracle, SAP, and TIBCO are offering MDM application systems. However, the usercommunity feels a significant mismatch between their own strategic requirements and the functionality currently offered bythe software products. As the Information Systems (IS) research community has remained silent so far regarding this researchproblem, the research presented in this paper makes intensive use of knowledge from the practitioners’ community in order todesign a framework for strategic business requirements to be met by MDM systems. As an outcome of a design-orientedresearch process, the framework is an artifact which advances the scientific body of knowledge while at the same timeproviding benefit for practitioners. The framework includes seven design principles which are translated into 23requirements. The requirements form a baseline for internal and external communication in companies and for the design ofconcrete MDM systems

    The administration management as an activity and institute's main task which is also called as Back Office System, supported by several information systems. The data need and information in one information system cannot be fulfilled only by one information source, but it needs a composition from a two or more sources in one institute/organization. To solve this problem, we need an architecture model which can solve integration system between different information systems. This Integrated Information System Design Research Method uses Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach as the architecture base, Model View Controller (MVC) method as the model in the programming (coding). The applied development method SOA utilizes Service Oriented Modelling and Architecture (SOMA) development system, it is a system design method which classifies business process in to a service group.     Aligning Business Process Quality and Information System Quality

    Business processes and information systems mutually affect each other in non-trivial ways. Frequently, the business process design and the information system design are not well aligned. This means that business processes are designed without taking the information system impact into account, and vice versa. Missing alignment at design time often results in quality problems at runtime, such as large response times of information systems, large process execution times, overloaded information systems or interrupted processes. Aligning business process quality and information system quality at design time requires to solve the following problems (P). Business process quality and information system quality have to be characterized. P1: In contrast to information system quality, which is specified in the ISO/IEC 9126 standard, for example, there is no common and comprehensive understanding of business process quality. P2: Beyond that, current business process modeling notations do not aim to represent quality aspects. The impact of a business process on the quality of an information system, and vice versa, is unknown at design time. P3: The mutual impact between business processes and information systems must be predicted at design time. In this thesis, the Business Process Quality Reference-Model (BPQRM), a quality model for business processes, is introduced. The model allows for a comprehensive characterization of business process quality (P1). The BPQRM is applied successfully in a case study to identify potential for process quality improvement in practice. Based on the BPQRM an existing process modeling notation is extended by model elements to represent quality aspects (P2). Simulation is a powerful means to predict the impact of a business process on the quality of an information system, and vice versa, at design time. This thesis proposes two simulation approaches to predict the mutual impact between business processes and information systems, in terms of performance (P3). The approach Business IT Impact Simulation (BIIS) defines interfaces between the business process simulation and the information system simulation. Performance-relevant information is exchanged via the interfaces between both simulations. Using business process simulation and information system simulation in isolation, workload burstiness is not adequately reflected. This is especially true for occasional, volatile peak loads. Workload burstiness can significantly affect the performance of business processes and information systems. The approach Integrated Business IT Impact Simulation (IntBIIS) for the integration of business processes and information systems in a single simulation allows for reflecting workload burstiness correctly. The simulation approaches support the comparison of design alternatives and the verification of a certain design against requirements.     Data Profiling to Reveal Meaningful Structures for Standardization

    Today many organisations and enterprises are using data from several sources either for strategic decision making or other business goals such as data integration. Data quality problems are always a hindrance to effective and efficient utilization of such data. Tools have been built to clean and standardize data, however, there is a need to pre-process this data by applying techniques and processes from statistical semantics, NLP, and lexical analysis. Data profiling employed these techniques to discover, reveal commonalties and differences in the inherent data structures, present ideas for creation of unified data model, and provide metrics for data standardization and verification. The IBM WebSphere tool was used to pre-process dataset/records by design and implementation of rule sets which were developed in QualityStage and tasks which were created in DataStage. Data profiling process generated set of statistics (frequencies), token/phrase relationships (RFDs, GRFDs), and other findings in the dataset that provided an overall view of the data source's inherent properties and structures.     Ontology-based patterns for the integration of business processes and enterprise application architectures

    Increasingly, enterprises are using Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) as an approach to Enterprise Application Integration (EAI). SOA has the potential to bridge the gap between business and technology and to improve the reuse of existing applications and the interoperability with new ones. In addition to service architecture descriptions, architecture abstractions like patterns and styles capture design knowledge and allow the reuse of successfully applied designs, thus improving the quality of software. Knowledge gained from integration projects can be captured to build a repository of semantically enriched, experience-based solutions. Business patterns identify the interaction and structure between users, business processes, and data. Specific integration and composition patterns at a more technical level address enterprise application integration and capture reliable architecture solutions. We use an ontology-based approach to capture architecture and process patterns.     How smart technologies can support sustainable business models: Insights from an air navigation service provider

    Purpose: Although research on smart technologies explains their critical importance in sustainable business models (SBMs) (Mikalef et al., 2017), it remains unclear how organisations can embrace smart technologies to create and/or improve their sustainable business models. The purpose of this paper is to unravel and address the challenges of smart technologies to build and maintain a sustainable business model for organisations. Design/methodology/approach: The research develops an empirical analysis through a case study approach. We have investigated the case of ENAV – an Italian air navigation service provider – and how this firm uses smart technologies in the creation of its successful SBM. After constructing a basic theory, the authors moved to evidence collection. The data analysis has adopted a qualitative approach based on a thematic analysis of the transcripts and related documents. Findings: The findings from the case study support the idea that the business value and the strategic relevance of smart technologies still remain largely underestimated in SBM adoption (Mikalef et al., 2017). Case study findings suggest that until today smart technologies have played a minimal role in SBM adoption. However, the smart technologies show the potential to inform the SBM adoption process by contributing to corporate communication for external stakeholders and to the main dimensions of SBMs such as safety and security or the respect for social and environmental criteria in the supply chain. Practical implications: This study seeks to support organisations and their directors to build and improve sustainable business models through smart technologies to maintain their competitive advantages. Specifically, our findings suggest that smart technologies can help organisations bridge the design–implementation gap of sustainable business models. Originality/value: This research advances our understanding of the role of smart technologies by explaining how they can enhance sustainable business model adoption. Indeed, we offer a comprehensive view of the integration of insights from three different but related literature streams such as sustainability strategies, smart technologies and change management studies

    The Role of Supply Chain Process in the Goal Attainment among United Nations Missions in Conflict Situations. A Case Study of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

    The need for organizations to have successful supply chain management so that, the goals of these organizations are attained is uncontested. However, the UN peacekeeping missions have had challenges ensuring the effectiveness of the supply chain. Therefore, this study sought to establish the effect of supply chain processes on the attainment of goals in the UN peacekeeping missions. Supply chain processes involved value creation, integration of key business processes and collaboration of the team members and other partners. The theoretical underpinning of the study was based on the Systems theory of Bertalanffy (1950) to view UNMISS as a system with supply chain management. The study adopted a descriptive case study research design. Descriptively, the study employed questionnaire and document reviews in the data collection process while analysis and presentation of findings involved the use of tables, graphs and charts. The study established that the supply chain processes are very important in the attainment of UN peacekeeping mission goals in South Sudan. These processes in terms of value creation, integration of key business processes and collaboration amongst stakeholders ensure that there is value for money through full utilization of resources, obedience of decisions made by the UN secretariat, employment of competent staff training and continued flow of their activities. The model results showed that value creation has a positive significant effect on the attainment of goals in the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The researchers recommended that the need to embrace technology is paramount when it comes to supply chain management and attainment of goals by the UN peacekeeping missions
