Incumbent organizations in every industry face the imminent threat of digital organizations, particularly digital platform businesses, becoming their competitors. Digital platforms enable value exchanges among its users and can quickly scale and generate substantial network effects. Incumbents, as part of their digital transformation and business model innovation efforts, should consider using a digital multi-sided platform business model to remain competitive in the sharing economy. In this research-in-progress study, we identify the digital platform threat, briefly discuss business model innovation and the dynamic capabilities theory, present a research methodology for our study, describe six digital platform initiatives at four organizations, and provide a framework classifying digital platform strategies for incumbent organizations

Its basic elements include globalization processes, massive implementation of Information Technology and the establishment of virtual enterprises. Implemented processes take the form of pro-active business that fosters innovation and personification of its market offer. Enterprises that utilize Internet infrastructure in their activities carry out a specific e-business model. Their key commodity is information. It is based on changing the traditional SCM into e-SCN as well as on creating the so-called ‘Internet value network.’ In order to be created, the enterprise has to be properly prepared for the new conditions, which is called net readiness. This article describes the characteristics of supply chains in the new economy, stresses the significance of information and effective business management in addition to a potential effect of the new economy on the market competitiveness of enterprises. Net readiness has been described here based on a study of a group of the biggest Polish businesses.

Modularity and network integration: emergent sustainable services in mobile payment systems

    Get PDF
This paper introduces the concept of modularity in financial services, discusses how new value chains are created and addresses emerging opportunities for innovative business models in the digital economy. We argue that innovation occurred in the banking sector despite the lagging adoption of new operational practices but due to technology drive for new ways to provide services. Banking innovation is commonly a matter of case facilitation vs. lock-in, in which the systemic effects of balancing delay vs. fast progress requires business model choices. In the banking sector, where there is little power stability among stakeholders, asymmetrical periods of dynamism are triggered by the modernization of the systems [13]. The main argument of this paper is that we can use models of modularity and network integration to improve our understanding of sustainable emerging banking practices. This is fundamental when establishing the potential contribution of this sector to digital economy models

© 2019, IEOM Society International. In today\u27s knowledge-based digital economy, the pace of innovation is accelerating with disruptive technologies being discovered and introduced rapidly. The new global business environment has pressured many organizations to be more aggressive in adopting innovation and emerging technologies and use them as the cornerstone of their competitive strategy. Moreover, changing customer behavior, demand and requirement have led to complex changes and created an urgency to digitally transform an organization. In such an environment, rapid transformation is needed to accelerate and innovate business activities, business processes, models, and, ultimately, the workforce competencies. In such a situation, many c-suite executives are facing various challenges such as rigid processes, risk avoidance, digital disruption, interdepartmental conflict, disinterest in new ideas and complacency to move forward. These challenges require a vastly different approach to digitally transform a company\u27s business. The objective of this paper is to propose an integrated digital transformation framework by integrating the business-need space (model elements), problem space (design thinking), solution space (Waterfall, agile) and change management space methods for a successful digital transformation deployment

Digital Transformation and Sustainable Oriented Innovation: A System Transition Model for Socio-Economic Scenario Analysis

    Get PDF
Sustainability and digitalization are essential duties for companies to perform in the current socio-economic landscape due to risks caused by traditional manufacturing practices, and rules imposed by stakeholders and governments. Tools that help exploring uncertain future scenarios to address such a complex challenge are of vital importance for both businesses, governments, and financial institutions. This paper presents the IN4.0-SD, a novel system dynamics model to capture the dynamic interplay of industrial innovation, inequality, and inflation. The IN4.0-SD is a closed-economy System Dynamics model composed of three agents: sustainable oriented innovation business (SOIB), digital asset supplier business (DASB), and household. DASB and SOIB are both assumed to supply one product to the economy and fundamentally differ among each other in their business models. While the sustainable oriented innovation business produces and sells capital goods making revenue out of sales, digital asset supplier detaches the concept of production from sales moving toward an intangible economy, charging for a fee licence of their tools that can be distributed via a network economy. Simulations show the level of flexibility of the model in addressing a variety of scenarios, playing at the threshold of technology development, inequality rise, massive unemployment and providing an archetype for sustainable oriented innovation and digital transformation models. The findings suggested by the model analysis are used to infer conclusions for the wider society, including implications for sustainable oriented businesses and digital transformation. These are confirmed by previous studies, around the overall trend in wealth creation for large technology firms’ owners, potential impact for employment in the digital economy, and transformation for the labour market

The Portuguese tourism distribution recognizes in the digital economy drivers - based on e-business, collaborative networks and information exchange - an incentive to productivity and rendibility, leading to sustainable competitive advantages. Travel agencies live currently in a Darwinian business-oriented environment, where only resilient entrepreneurs are able to survive. This framing allows the genesis of a new theoretical archetype of travel agencies, the “TEEM - Travel Experience Ecosystem Model” observing several organizational strategies and concepts, such as Resilient Virtual Organizations, Digital Customer Ecosystems, Collaborative Value Chain and Co-Creation travel experiences, as well as new types of Open Source Innovation trough Social Web

On Behalf of Digital Innovation: A Replication Study on International and National Executive Search Consultancy Firms

Disruptive innovation (DI) provides an explanation for firms\u27 success and failure in the business economy. Building on Karimi and Walter (2015), whose study ascertains dynamic capabilities (DC) in responding to digital platforms and firm performance, this study extends their model by examining the effect of relational capabilities as DC in international and national executive search consultancies (CERS) based in Brazil. CERS have been fundamentally changing their traditional operating business models because of digital platforms. Thus, a survey questionnaire from 141 CERS executives measured the impact of DC on CERS performance and digital platforms. The findings highlight that DC is positively associated with digital platform capacity and CERS performance, as Karimi and Walter (2015) also highlighted. We believe that the findings impact practitioners because this study is original in the context of CERS and valuable for new business model formation, showing that DCs are relevant in any dynamic business scenario. Theoretically, this study enhances DC and DI theories, confirming that digital platform capabilities are a powerful strategic choice to reinvent core business functions and accelerate innovativeness
