Racialized Sexual Discrimination (RSD) and Psychological Wellbeing Among Young Black Gay/Bisexual Men (YBGBM)

The vast majority of research addressing the health needs of young Black gay/bisexual men (YBGBM) has focused on sexuality and HIV, and there is a deficit of research exploring issues related to racism and psychological wellbeing among this population. In this dissertation, I examine an understudied phenomenon that I define as Racialized Sexual Discrimination (RSD), which describes the sexualized discriminatory treatment that gay and bisexual men are subject to in online social venues. I attempt to build upon the largely qualitative literature on this topic by applying a mostly quantitative methodological approach. First, I conducted an exhaustive review and synthesis of literature that examines gay/bisexual men of color's experience with RSD, as well as racial discrimination more broadly. I discuss this phenomenon in a stress and coping framework, and examine the ways in which RSD may contribute to poor psychological health outcomes. Next, I conducted a mixed methods research project to develop a scale to measure the full scope of the phenomenon, and evaluated the new scale using exploratory factor analysis. I successfully constructed the scale after conducting a series focus groups, and getting feedback from cognitive interviewees and a panel of expert reviewers. The results of the factor analysis revealed an eight-factor structure of RSD under three core domains: 1.) White-Centric Domain (white supremacy and white inferiority); 2.) Black-Centric Domain (white rejecting black, black rejecting black, white desiring black, and black desiring black); and 3.) Neutral/Non-directional Domain (Degradation and Role Assumptions). Finally, I sought to determine whether RSD was related to poor psychological health outcomes among a sample of YBGBM. To do so, I examined the association between six subscale across the Black-Centric and White-Centric domains on two psychological health outcomes (depressive symptoms and feelings of self-worth) by estimating twelve hierarchical linear regression models. The analyses revealed that (1) white supremacy, black rejecting black, white desiring black, and black desiring black were all significantly associated with higher depressive symptoms; and (2) white desiring black was significantly associated with lower feelings of self-worth. This study is among the first to explore the relationship between RSD and markers of psychological wellbeing using quantitative analyses, and provides preliminary evidence that RSD is negatively associated with psychological wellbeing among YBGBM. Hybridity, Style and Identity, the Court Art and Architecture of Lucknow 1770-1850

Lucknow, the capital city of present day Uttar Pradesh, and previously of the Kingdom of Oudh, was the site of an extraordinary cultural and artistic milieu in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Oudh was an semi-independent state within the declining mughal empire, and close contact with Europeans provoked an exchange of architectural ideas which developed into a hybrid of Indian and European prototypes. In addition, the publication of Indian scenes in England initiated a response to Indian architectural styles with some fascinating results. Adopting elements of neo-classical architecture. combined with the local late mughal style, the nawabs of Lucknow initiated an extraordinary program of palatial and religious building. Drawing extensively on local prototypes, and using neo-classical forms and motifs. a hybrid architectural milieu developed which functioned as a multivalent sign of the nawabs' aspirations and identity statements. The buildings provoked, and continue to provoke, comment and debate, and are examined here in terms of their use as signs of identity, gendered spaces, and ritual spaces, both social and religious. The converse; British uses of Indian architectural forms; is discussed as being equally significant as a demonstration of how exotic forms are adopted and assimilated into an existing style in the west. In late eighteenth and early nineteenth century England, this took place within a larger debate about styles and values, and a commitment to notions of primacy and purity in architecture. One result of this thinking is the denigration of hybridity and deviation from style which informed the art historical attitudes to Lucknavi architecture, and this is discussed with particular reference to the western art historical discourse. The use of the other in the formation of diverse identity statements is examined and developed in three specific cases: the little-known culture. architecture and rituals of the Lucknavi Shias, the employment of a European artist in the king of Lucknow's inner circle, and his influence on the courtly style, and the use of the first visual mass-medium, the Panorama, to display Lucknow to the British public. These significant examples are used to illustrate the essentially tripartite nature of the hybrid culture of Lucknow: Indian (mughal), European and Shia; and subverting the polarity that is usually assumed in the contacts between east and west

The growth and locational dynamics of the UK computer services industry,1981-1996

The central aim of this thesis is to explore the key structural, organisational and locational trends within an innovative, fast growing and strategically important producer service sector in the UK, the computer services industry. The thesis has five more specific objectives; firstly, to examine the ongoing internationalisation processes in this sector; secondly, to profile the spatial, structural and occupational structure of the UK industry in the context of these processes; thirdly, and most importantly, to explore the factors behind the uneven development pattern in this sector (London and the South East accounted for 59 per cent of employment in 1993); fourthly to contribute to the theoretical understanding of uneven development in contemporary economies; and finally, to consider the policy implications of the growth dynamics of the sector. The research is based on three main tranches of fieldwork. Firstly, 17 interviews with managers and officials in the Irish software industry provide a case study of the highly internationalised nature of the package software industry. Secondly, nine interviews with representatives of the top suppliers in the UK industry illustrate how these dominant firms are restructuring both spatially and functionally to meet the needs of the developing, international market. Thirdly, the results of a structured interview survey of 173 firms spread across four counties (Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Cheshire, Tyne & Wear) are presented to illustrate the regional variations within the industry's structure, new firm formation process and linkages that both underpin, and reflect the uneven development pattern in the sector. The analysis concludes that the dominance of the Greater South East in this industry is largely unassailable; based upon the historic growth of the industry, the region has long since achieved the critical mass to create many new firms which then reinforce the dominance, supported by the availability of labour, an acceptable living environment, and proximity to a large, high-order, regional market. The investment and restructuring strategies of key foreign-owned multinationals are also a key contributor to the South-East's primacy
