Abstract. This thesis is a study of how register-transfer-level (RTL) power profiling can help the design and signoff of power distribution network in digital integrated circuits. RTL power profiling is a method which collects RTL power estimation results to a single power profile which then can be analysed in order to find interesting time windows for specifying power distribution network design and signoff. The thesis starts with theory part. Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) inverter power dissipation is studied at first. Next, power distribution network structure and voltage drop problems are introduced. Voltage drop is demonstrated by using power distribution network impedance figures. Common on-chip power distribution network structure is introduced, and power distribution network design flow is outlined. Finally, decoupling capacitors function and impact on power distribution network impedance are thoroughly explained. The practical part of the thesis contains RTL power profiling flow details and power profiling flow results for one simulation case in one design block. Also, some methods of improving RTL power estimation accuracy are discussed and calibration with extracted parasitic is then used to get new set of power profiling time windows. After the results are presented, overall RTL power estimation accuracy is analysed and resulted time windows are compared to reference gate-level time windows. RTL power profiling result analysis shows that resulted time windows match the theory and RTL power profiling seems to be a promising method for finding time windows for power distribution network design and signoff.Rekisterisiirtotason tehoprofilointi jÀrjestelmÀpiirin tehonsiirtoverkon suunnittelussa ja verifioinnissa. Using Physical Compilation to Implement a System on Chip Platform

The goal of this thesis was to setup a complete design flow involving physical synthesis. The design chosen for this purpose was a system-on-chip (SoC) platform developed at the University of Tennessee. It involves a Leon Processor with a minimal cache configuration, an AMBA on-chip bus and an Advanced Encryption Standard module which performs decryption. As transistor size has entered the deep submicron level, iterations involved in the design cycle have increased due to the domination of interconnect delays over cell delays. Traditionally, interconnect delay has been estimated through the use of wire-load models. However, since there is no physical placement information, the delay estimation may be ineffective and result in increased iterations. Hence, placement-based synthesis has recently been introduced to provide better interconnect delay estimation. The tool used in this thesis to implement the system-on-chip design using physical synthesis is Synopsys Physical Compiler. The flow has been setup through the use of the Galaxy Reference Flow scripts obtained from Synopsys. As part of the thesis, an analysis of the differences between a physically synthesized design and a logically synthesized one in terms of area and delay is presented

Mixed-signal designs are becoming more and more complex every day. In order to adapt to the new market requirements, a formal process for design and verification of mixed signal systems i. e. top-down design and bottom-up verification methodology is required. This methodology has already been established for digital design. The goal of this research is to propose a new design methodology for mixed signal systems. In the first two chapters of this thesis, the need for a mixed signal design flow based on top-down design methodology will be discussed. The proposed design flow is based on behavioral modeling of the mixed signal system using one of the mixed signal behavioral modeling languages. These models can be used for design and verification through different steps of the design from system level modeling to final physical design. The other advantage of the proposed flow is analog and digital co-design. In the remaining chapters of this thesis, the proposed design flow was verified by designing an 800 MHz mixed signal PLL. The PLL uses a charge pump phase frequency detector, a single capacitor loop filter, and a feed forward error correction architecture using an active damping control circuit instead of passive resistor in loop filter. The design was done in 0. 18- ” m CMOS process technology

System level performance and yield optimisation for analogue integrated circuits

    No full text
Advances in silicon technology over the last decade have led to increased integration of analogue and digital functional blocks onto the same single chip. In such a mixed signal environment, the analogue circuits must use the same process technology as their digital neighbours. With reducing transistor sizes, the impact of process variations on analogue design has become prominent and can lead to circuit performance falling below specification and hence reducing the yield. This thesis explores the methodology and algorithms for an analogue integrated circuit automation tool that optimizes performance and yield. The trade-offs between performance and yield are analysed using a combination of an evolutionary algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation. Through the integration of yield parameter into the optimisation process, the trade off between the performance functions can be better treated that able to produce a higher yield. The results obtained from the performance and variation exploration are modelled behaviourally using a Verilog-A language. The model has been verified with transistor level simulation and a silicon prototype. For a large analogue system, the circuit is commonly broken down into its constituent sub-blocks, a process known as hierarchical design. The use of hierarchical-based design and optimisation simplifies the design task and accelerates the design flow by encouraging design reuse.A new approach for system level yield optimisation using a hierarchical-based design is proposed and developed. The approach combines Multi-Objective Bottom Up (MUBU) modelling technique to model the circuit performance and variation and Top Down Constraint Design (TDCD) technique for the complete system level design. The proposed method has been used to design a 7th order low pass filter and a charge pump phase locked loop system. The results have been verified with transistor level simulations and suggest that an accurate system level performance and yield prediction can be achieved with the proposed methodology

A framework for fine-grain synthesis optimization of operational amplifiers

This thesis presents a cell-level framework for Operational Amplifiers Synthesis (OASYN) coupling both circuit design and layout. For circuit design, the tool applies a corner-driven optimization, accounting for on-chip performance variations. By exploring the process, voltage, and temperature variations space, the tool extracts design worst case solution. The tool undergoes sensitivity analysis along with Pareto-optimality to achieve required specifications. For layout phase, OASYN generates a DRC proved automated layout based on a sized circuit-level description. Morata et al. (1996) introduced an elegant representation of block placement called sequence pair for general floorplans (SP). Like TCG and BSG, but unlike O-tree, B*tree, and CBL, SP is P-admissible. Unlike SP, TCG supports incremental update during operation and keeps the information of the boundary modules as well as their relative positions in the representation. Block placement algorithms that are based on SP use heuristic optimization algorithms, e.g., simulated annealing where generation of large number of sequence pairs are required. Therefore a fast algorithm is needed to generate sequence pairs after each solution perturbation. The thesis presents a new simple and efficient O(n) runtime algorithm for fast realization of incremental update for cost evaluation. The algorithm integrates sequence pair and transitive closure graph advantages into TCG-S* a superior topology update scheme which facilitates the search for optimum desired floorplan. Experiments show that TCG-S* is better than existing works in terms of area utilization and convergence speed. Routing-aware placement is implemented in OASYN, handling symmetry constraints, e.g., interdigitization, common centroid, along with congestion elimination and the enhancement of placement routability

Γ (Gamma): cloud-based analog circuit design system

Includes bibliographical references.2016 Summer. With ever increasing demand for lower power consumption, lower cost, and higher performance, designing analog circuits to meet design specifications has become an increasing challenging task, On one hand, analog circuit designers must have intimate knowledge about the underlining silicon process technology's capability to achieve the desired specifications. On the other hand, they must understand the impact of tweaking circuits to satisfy a given specification on all circuit performance parameters. Analog designers have traditionally learned to tackle design problems with numerous circuit simulations using accurate circuit simulators such as SPICE, and have increasingly relied on trial-and-error approaches to reach a converging point. However, the increased complexity with each generation of silicon technology and high dimensionality of searching for solutions, even for some simple analog circuits, have made trial-and-error approaches extremely inefficient, causing long design cycles and often missed market opportunities. Novel rapid and accurate circuit evaluation methods that are tightly integrated with circuit search and optimization methods are needed to aid design productivity. Furthermore, the current design environment with fully distributed licensing and supporting structures is cumbersome at best to allow efficient and up-to-date support for design engineers. With increasing support and licensing costs, fewer and fewer design centers can afford it. Cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) model provides new opportunities for CAD applications. It enables immediate software delivery and update to customers at very low cost. SaaS tools benefit from fast feedback and sharing channels between users and developers and run on hardware resources tailored and provided for them by software vendors. However, web-based tools must perform in a very short turn-around schedule and be always responsive. A new class of analog design tools is presented in this dissertation. The tools provide effective design aid to analog circuit designers with a dash-board control of many important circuit parameters. Fast and accurate circuit evaluations are achieved using a novel lookup-table transistor models (LUT) with novel built-in features tightly integrated with the search engine to achieve desired speed and accuracy. This enables circuit evaluation time several orders faster than SPICE simulations. The proposed architecture for analog design attempts to break the traditional analog design flow using SPICE based trial-and-error methods by providing designers with useful information about the effects of prior design decisions they have made and potential next steps they can take to meet specifications. Benefiting from the advantages offered by web-hosted architectures, the proposed architecture incorporates SaaS as its operating model. The application of the proposed architecture is illustrated by an analog circuit sizer and optimizer. The Γ (Gamma) sizer and optimizer show how web-based design-decision supporting tool can help analog circuit designers to reduce design time and achieve high quality circuit
