Mitigating Epidemics through Mobile Micro-measures
Epidemics of infectious diseases are among the largest threats to the quality
of life and the economic and social well-being of developing countries. The
arsenal of measures against such epidemics is well-established, but costly and
insufficient to mitigate their impact. In this paper, we argue that mobile
technology adds a powerful weapon to this arsenal, because (a) mobile devices
endow us with the unprecedented ability to measure and model the detailed
behavioral patterns of the affected population, and (b) they enable the
delivery of personalized behavioral recommendations to individuals in real
time. We combine these two ideas and propose several strategies to generate
such recommendations from mobility patterns. The goal of each strategy is a
large reduction in infections, with a small impact on the normal course of
daily life. We evaluate these strategies over the Orange D4D dataset and show
the benefit of mobile micro-measures, even if only a fraction of the population
participates. These preliminary results demonstrate the potential of mobile
technology to complement other measures like vaccination and quarantines

Communication and trust in the bounded confidence model
The communication process in a situation of emergency is discussed within the
Scheff theory of shame and pride. The communication involves messages from
media and from other persons. Three strategies are considered: selfish (to
contact friends), collective (to join other people) and passive (to do
nothing). We show that the pure selfish strategy cannot be evolutionarily
stable. The main result is that the community structure is statistically

The report follows on from a 2-day workshop funded by the STELLAR Network of Excellence as part of their 2009 Alpine Rendez-Vous workshop series and is edited by Elizabeth Brown with a foreword from Mike Sharples. Contributors have provided examples of innovative and exciting research projects and practical applications for mobile learning in a location-sensitive setting, including the sharing of good practice and the key findings that have resulted from this work. There is also a debate about whether location-based and contextual learning results in shallower learning strategies and a section detailing the future challenges for location-based learning

Augmenting the field experience: a student-led comparison of techniques and technologies
In this study we report on our experiences of creating and running a student fieldtrip exercise which allowed students to compare a range of approaches to the design of technologies for augmenting landscape scenes. The main study site is around Keswick in the English Lake District, Cumbria, UK, an attractive upland environment popular with tourists and walkers. The aim of the exercise for the students was to assess the effectiveness of various forms of geographic information in augmenting real landscape scenes, as mediated through a range of techniques and technologies. These techniques were: computer-generated acetate overlays showing annotated wireframe views from certain key points; a custom-designed application running on a PDA; a mediascape running on the mScape software on a GPS-enabled mobile phone; Google Earth on a tablet PC; and a head-mounted in-field Virtual Reality system. Each group of students had all five techniques available to them, and were tasked with comparing them in the context of creating a visitor guide to the area centred on the field centre. Managing ubiquitous eco cities: the role of urban telecommunication infrastructure networks and convergence technologies
A successful urban management system for a Ubiquitous Eco City requires an integrated approach. This integration includes bringing together economic, socio-cultural and urban development with a well orchestrated, transparent and open decision making mechanism and necessary infrastructure and technologies. Rapidly developing information and telecommunication technologies and their platforms in the late 20th Century improves urban management and enhances the quality of life and place. Telecommunication technologies provide an important base for monitoring and managing activities over wired, wireless or fibre-optic networks. Particularly technology convergence creates new ways in which the information and telecommunication technologies are used. The 21st Century is an era where information has converged, in which people are able to access a variety of services, including internet and location based services, through multi-functional devices such as mobile phones and provides opportunities in the management of Ubiquitous Eco Cities. This paper discusses the recent developments in telecommunication networks and trends in convergence technologies and their implications on the management of Ubiquitous Eco Cities and how this technological shift is likely to be beneficial in improving the quality of life and place. The paper also introduces recent approaches on urban management systems, such as intelligent urban management systems, that are suitable for Ubiquitous Eco Cities
