    noteEd - A web-based lecture capture system

    No full text
Electronic capture and playback of lectures has long been the aim of many academic projects. Synote is an application developed under MACFoB (Multimedia Annotation and Community Folksonomy Building) project to synchronise the playback of lecture materials. However, Synote provides no functionality to capture such multimedia. This project involves the creation of a system called noteEd, which will capture a range of multimedia from lectures and make them available to Synote. This report describes the evolution of the noteEd project throughout the design and implementation of the proposed system. The performance of the system was checked in a user acceptance test with the customer, which is discussed after screenshots of our solution. Finally, the project management is presented containing a final project evaluation

Electronic Origin of High Temperature Superconductivity in Single-Layer FeSe Superconductor

The latest discovery of high temperature superconductivity signature in single-layer FeSe is significant because it is possible to break the superconducting critical temperature ceiling (maximum Tc~55 K) that has been stagnant since the discovery of Fe-based superconductivity in 2008. It also blows the superconductivity community by surprise because such a high Tc is unexpected in FeSe system with the bulk FeSe exhibiting a Tc at only 8 K at ambient pressure which can be enhanced to 38 K under high pressure. The Tc is still unusually high even considering the newly-discovered intercalated FeSe system A_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 (A=K, Cs, Rb and Tl) with a Tc at 32 K at ambient pressure and possible Tc near 48 K under high pressure. Particularly interesting is that such a high temperature superconductivity occurs in a single-layer FeSe system that is considered as a key building block of the Fe-based superconductors. Understanding the origin of high temperature superconductivity in such a strictly two-dimensional FeSe system is crucial to understanding the superconductivity mechanism in Fe-based superconductors in particular, and providing key insights on how to achieve high temperature superconductivity in general. Here we report distinct electronic structure associated with the single-layer FeSe superconductor. Its Fermi surface topology is different from other Fe-based superconductors; it consists only of electron pockets near the zone corner without indication of any Fermi surface around the zone center. Our observation of large and nearly isotropic superconducting gap in this strictly two-dimensional system rules out existence of node in the superconducting gap. These results have provided an unambiguous case that such a unique electronic structure is favorable for realizing high temperature superconductivity

Professional Associations, Power and the Building of Electronic Prescription Systems

In this paper we pull together an analysis of power with an analysis of the agency of a Professional Association of Pharmacists in the building of an electronic prescription (EP) system. We frame our analysis of the building process of an EP system in terms of power from the perspective of the pharmacists collective, and particularly, from the perspective of the Catalan Professional Association of Pharmacists (CPAP). What concerns us in this paper is the role of the CPAP in structuring the field of other’s action –namely, community pharmacies which are members of the CPAP and the Catalan Health Service– during the building process. From this perspective, we study power not only in the CPAP’s capacity to influence others through the control of resources that others need, but also in the field of relations that characterize a power arena and in the effect of the ordering work performed by the CPAP. By examining the case from the lens of the circuits of power we identify two kinds of interventions from the CPAP –conservative and transformative–, and distinguish them based on the circuit of power they active and the use of IT they make

VAMDC as a Resource for Atomic and Molecular Data and the New Release of VALD

The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) (M.L. Dubernet et al. 2010, JQSRT 111, 2151) is an EU-FP7 e-infrastructure project devoted to building a common electronic infrastructure for the exchange and distribution of atomic and molecular data. It involves two dozen teams from six EU member states (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, United Kingdom) as well as Russia, Serbia, and Venezuela. Within VAMDC scientists from many different disciplines in atomic and molecular physics collaborate with users of their data and also with scientists and engineers from the information and communication technology community. In this presentation an overview of the current status of VAMDC and its capabilities will be provided. In the second part of the presentation I will focus on one of the databases which have become part of the VAMDC platform, the Vienna Atomic Line Data Base (VALD). VALD has developed into a well-known resource of atomic data for spectroscopy particularly in astrophysics. A new release, VALD-3, will provide numerous improvements over its predecessor. This particularly relates to the data contents where new sets of atomic data for both precision spectroscopy (i.e., with data for observed energy levels) as well as opacity calculations (i.e., with data involving predicted energy levels) have been included. Data for selected diatomic molecules have been added and a new system for data distribution and data referencing provides for more convenience in using the upcoming third release of VALD.Comment: 8 pages, 1 tabl

Planning and Implementing a Large-Scale COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic Recommendations, Reflections and Lessons Learned & A Guide for Maine Communities

In November 2020, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) requested assistance from Maine hospitals to dispense COVID-19 vaccines. Mid Coast Hospital became a point of dispensing for Sagadahoc and Northern Cumberland Counties. Mid Coast Hospital became a MaineHealth member in January 2021, and benefitted from policies, procedures, and support of the larger MaineHealth system but did not adopt the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system used by MaineHealth to schedule appointments, register patients and document vaccination until November 2021. The inability to use the EMR system required and allowed Mid Coast Hospital to make adaptations to the MaineHealth model, including an alternative online scheduling and eligibility screening system, unique registration forms, and a system to record each immunization with the State of Maine. These procedures had to be nimble and responsive to rapidly changing state mandates and weekly fluctuations in vaccine allocation, and meet the needs of the community, especially those who faced technology, mobility, literacy, and language barriers. I was assigned to serve as the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Director in November 2020 to plan and operate Mid Coast Hospital’s COVID-19 community vaccination efforts. This community guide provides guidance and templates used to turn the Town of Brunswick’s Parks and Recreation building into an efficient, high-volume community clinic, able to administer 800 vaccines a day, while following pandemic health guidelines. The resources can be adopted and adapted by anyone interested in offering vaccines to their community. This successful model allowed Mid Coast Hospital to dispense 56,466 doses of COVID-19 vaccine from January to May 2021 (Dumas, 2022)

Decentralized Sewer Unit Packages as an Alternative for Bulloch County to Manage Fast Growth

    Get PDF
Throughout the state of Georgia, rural areas rely on septic tanks to dispose of bodily waste for small commercial, industrial, and residential construction. Septic tanks act as the most conventional system when properties fall outside the service areas of municipal and private wastewater treatment facilities. Bulloch County has a vast number of rural dwellings within its boundaries. Moreover, the County experienced a steady 3 to 5% annual growth over the last several years. Therefore, an examination of alternatives to the traditional septic systems is warranted if the County wishes to maintain continued sustainable growth. This study focuses on the factors driving growth in Bulloch county including: population, housing, commercial and industrial development, subdivision development, assessed property values, and future development projections. Next, we compare two waste disposal systems that could substitute for traditional septic systems: a Small Diameter Gravity System (SDGS) and the Bioclere Onsite Wastewater Treatment System. Electronic libraries and electronic librarians: Who does what in a national electronic community

This talk will have two parts: First, I'm going to describe very briefly what this new kind of library technology is like through a discussion of the Worm Community System (WCS), why it is going to be very important, and why it will involve a lot of money. What I want to emphasize at the start is that while WCS may seem like an esoteric research project, in fact it is one of the flagship information projects funded by the National Science Foundation. In addition, the National Information Infrastructure Act looms in the immediate future, authorizing an enormous amount of money to be spent in the development of digital libraries in specialized areas. Digital libraries will require information systems like WCS. This project has become a national model of this new kind of information system, but its primary content is really just a special collection, in the same sense you already know. It is an important national effort, but there will be lots of other efforts like this in many different subject areas. Second, I'm going to discuss in more detail what kinds of people are required to do this kind of activity. The roles range from traditional librarians all the way to systems architects. Similarly, the roles range from those that involve no computer knowledge at all to those that involve very intensive computing. My expectation is that people who call themselves "librarians" in the foreseeable future will actually span this entire range, even though now they are significantly skewed towards the traditional end.published or submitted for publicatio

CHARMS: A Charter Management System. Automating the Integration of Electronic Institutions and Humans

    Get PDF
The execution of process models is usually presented through a graphical user interface, especially when users¿ input is required. Existing mechanisms, such as Electronic Institutions (EIs), provide means to easily specify and automatically execute process models. However, every time the specification is modified, the graphical user interface (GUI) needed during the execution stage should be manually modified accordingly. This paper proposes a system that helps maintain such GUIs in an efficient and automated manner. We present and test Charms, a system built on top of EIs that allows the automatic creation and update of GUIs based on the provided process model specification. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.This work has been supported by: the LiquidPublications project (project.LiquidPub.org), funded by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research of the European Commission under fet-open grant number 213360; the Agreement Technologies project (www.agreement-technologies.org), funded by consolider csd 2007-0022, ingenio 2010; and the cbit project on community-building information technology, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under grant number TIN2010-16306.Peer Reviewe
