    Profiling the publish/subscribe paradigm for automated analysis using colored Petri nets

    UML sequence diagrams are used to graphically describe the message interactions between the objects participating in a certain scenario. Combined fragments extend the basic functionality of UML sequence diagrams with control structures, such as sequences, alternatives, iterations, or parallels. In this paper, we present a UML profile to annotate sequence diagrams with combined fragments to model timed Web services with distributed resources under the publish/subscribe paradigm. This profile is exploited to automatically obtain a representation of the system based on Colored Petri nets using a novel model-to-model (M2M) transformation. This M2M transformation has been specified using QVT and has been integrated in a new add-on extending a state-of-the-art UML modeling tool. Generated Petri nets can be immediately used in well-known Petri net software, such as CPN Tools, to analyze the system behavior. Hence, our model-to-model transformation tool allows for simulating the system and finding design errors in early stages of system development, which enables us to fix them at these early phases and thus potentially saving development costs

    Distributed Web Service Coordination for Collaboration Applications and Biological Workflows

    In this dissertation work, we have investigated the main research thrust of decentralized coordination of workflows over web services. To address distributed workflow coordination, first we have developed “Web Coordination Bonds” as a capable set of dependency modeling primitives that enable each web service to manage its own dependencies. Web bond primitives are as powerful as extended Petri nets and have sufficient modeling and expressive capabilities to model workflow dependencies. We have designed and prototyped our “Web Service Coordination Management Middleware” (WSCMM) system that enhances current web services infrastructure to accommodate web bond enabled web services. Finally, based on core concepts of web coordination bonds and WSCMM, we have developed the “BondFlow” system that allows easy configuration distributed coordination of workflows. The footprint of the BonFlow runtime is 24KB and the additional third party software packages, SOAP client and XML parser, account for 115KB

    Conceptual modelling of adaptive web services based on high-level petri nets

    Service technology geared by its SOA architecture and enabling Web services is rapidly gaining in maturity and acceptance. Consequently, most worldwide (private and corporate) cross-organizations are embracing this paradigm by publishing, requesting and composing their businesses and applications in the form of (web-)services. Nevertheless, to face harsh competitiveness such service oriented cross-organizational applications are increasingly pressed to be highly composite, adaptive, knowledge-intensive and very reliable. In contrast to that, Web service standards such as WSDL, WSBPEL, WS-CDL and many others offer just static, manual, purely process-centric and ad-hoc techniques to deploy such services. The main objective of this thesis consists therefore in leveraging the development of service-driven applications towards more reliability, dynamically and adaptable knowledge-intensiveness. This thesis puts forward an innovative framework based on distributed high-level Petri nets and event-driven business rules. More precisely, we developed a new variant of high-level Petri Nets formalism called Service-based Petri nets (CSrv-Nets), that exhibits the following potential characteristics. Firstly, the framework is supported by a stepwise methodology that starts with diagrammatical UML-class diagrams and business rules and leads to dynamically adaptive services specifications. Secondly, the framework soundly integrates behavioural event-driven business rules and stateful services both at the type and instance level and with an inherent distribution. Thirdly, the framework intrinsically permits validation through guided graphical animation. Fourthly, the framework explicitly separates between orchestrations for modelling rule-intensive single services and choreography for cooperating several services through their governing interactive business rules. Fifthly, the framework is based on a two-level conceptualization: (1) the modelling of any rule-centric service with CSrv-Nets; (2) the smooth upgrading of this service modelling with an adaptability-level that allows for dynamically shifting up and down any rule-centric behavior of the running business activities

    Modeling and Simulation of Message-Driven Self-Adaptive Systems

    Dynamische, sich selbst rekonfigurierende Systeme nutzen Nachrichtenwarteschlangen als gängige Methode zum Erreichen von Entkopplung zwischen Sendern und Empfängern. Das Vorhersagen der Qualität von Systemen zur Entwurfszeit ist wesentlich, da Änderungen in späteren Phasen der Entwicklung sehr viel aufwändiger und teurer sind. Momentan gibt es keine Methode, Nachrichtenwarteschlangen auf architekturellem Level darzustellen und deren Qualitätseinfluss auf Systeme vorherzusagen. Existierende Ansätze modellieren Warteschlangen nicht explizit sondern abstrahieren sie. Warteschlangeneffekte sowie Details der Nachrichten-Infrastruktur wie zum Beispiel Flusskontrolle werden nicht beachtet. Diese Arbeit schlägt ein Meta-Modell vor, das eine solche Repräsentation ermöglicht, und eine Simulations-Schnittstelle zwischen einer Simulation einer komponentenbasierten Architekturbeschreibungssprache und einer Nachrichtenaustausch-Simulation. Das Meta-Modell wurde als Erweiterung des Palladio Komponentenmodells realisiert. Die Schnittstelle wurde implementiert für den Palladio-Simulator SimuLizar und eine von RabbitMQ inspirierte Simulation, die dem AMQP 0.9.1 Protokoll folgt. Dies ermöglicht architekturelle Repräsentation von Nachrichtenaustausch und das Vorhersagen von Qualitätsattributen von nachrichtengetriebenen, selbst-adaptiven Systemen. Die Evaluation anhand einer Fallstudie zeigt die Anwendbarkeit des Ansatzes und seine Vorhersagegenauigkeit für Punkt-zu-Punkt-Kommunikation. Außerdem konnten andere qualitätsbezogene Metriken, wie etwa Nachrichtenwarteschlangenlänge, Ein- und Ausgangsraten von Nachrichtenwarteschlangen, sowie Speicherverbrauch korrekt vorhergesagt werden. Das ermöglicht tiefere Einsichten in die Qualität eines Systems.     Survivability modeling for cyber-physical systems subject to data corruption

    Cyber-physical critical infrastructures are created when traditional physical infrastructure is supplemented with advanced monitoring, control, computing, and communication capability. More intelligent decision support and improved efficacy, dependability, and security are expected. Quantitative models and evaluation methods are required for determining the extent to which a cyber-physical infrastructure improves on its physical predecessors. It is essential that these models reflect both cyber and physical aspects of operation and failure. In this dissertation, we propose quantitative models for dependability attributes, in particular, survivability, of cyber-physical systems. Any malfunction or security breach, whether cyber or physical, that causes the system operation to depart from specifications will affect these dependability attributes. Our focus is on data corruption, which compromises decision support -- the fundamental role played by cyber infrastructure. The first research contribution of this work is a Petri net model for information exchange in cyber-physical systems, which facilitates i) evaluation of the extent of data corruption at a given time, and ii) illuminates the service degradation caused by propagation of corrupt data through the cyber infrastructure. In the second research contribution, we propose metrics and an evaluation method for survivability, which captures the extent of functionality retained by a system after a disruptive event. We illustrate the application of our methods through case studies on smart grids, intelligent water distribution networks, and intelligent transportation systems. Data, cyber infrastructure, and intelligent control are part and parcel of nearly every critical infrastructure that underpins daily life in developed countries. Our work provides means for quantifying and predicting the service degradation caused when cyber infrastructure fails to serve its intended purpose.
