The head-modifier principle and multilingual term extraction

    Get PDF
Advances in Language Engineering may be dependent on theoretical principles originating from linguistics since both share a common object of enquiry, natural language structures. We outline an approach to term extraction that rests on theoretical claims about the structure of words. We use the structural properties of compound words to specifically elicit the sets of terms defined by type hierarchies such as hyponymy and meronymy. The theoretical claims revolve around the head-modifier principle which determines the formation of a major class of compounds. Significantly it has been suggested that the principle operates in languages other than English. To demonstrate the extendibility of our approach beyond English, we present a case study of term extraction in Chinese, a language whose written form is the vehicle of communication for over 1.3 billion language users, and therefore has great significance for the development of language engineering technologies

Basic methodical grounds of teaching international students chinese field-specific terms in technical institutes of higher education (in the context of polymer production)

We look at the problem connected with methods of teaching Chinese field-specific terms to international students in technical institutes of higher education. The basis of our research is represented by Chinese scientists’ articles in the sphere of manufacturing polymer. Our research is focused on the solution of problems connected with teaching Chinese field-specific terms to international students in technical institutes of higher education. The task required analysis of teaching and studying issues of field-specific disciplines in Tomsk Polytechnic University, study of terminological processes in Chinese, description of how field-specific terms are adopted from foreign languages into Chinese. Studying the above listed aspects provided a basis for developing a classification of polymer production terms. The way the Chinese language borrows a terminological item is considered when dividing terminological elements into groups for further systematization. We structured our classification of terms and terminological combinations by taking into account the fundamentals of high-molecular composition chemistry for easier understanding of polymer production terminology by teachers and students of technical institutions of higher education

A Cartographic Analysis of the Syntactic Structure of Mandarin Ba

This paper analyzes the syntactic properties of the “ba-construction” or “disposal form” in Mandarin Chinese under new theoretical frameworks. By introducing the event-decomposition method proposed by Ramchand (2008), it argues that the ba-construction conveys the causativity and the resultativity of the event at the same time, which can be shown from the syntactic representation. Then, this paper tests the position of ba, assuming that it is a functional head, and the result of the test indicates that ba is a voice head in the hierarchy of functional projections proposed by Cinque (1999, 2006). The final word order of a ba-construction can be derived by the argument movement of the direct object and by a head movement of ba or by the merge of ba at the head position of the higher functional head of a split VoiceP

Problems of methodology and explanation in word order universals research

Ever since the publication of Greenberg 1963, word order typologists have attempted to formulate and refine implicational universals of word order so as to characterize the restricted distribution of certain word order patterns, and in some cases have also attempted to develop general principles to explain the existence of those universals
