Two Case Studies of Subsystem Design for General-Purpose CSCW Software Architectures
This paper discusses subsystem design guidelines for the software architecture of general-purpose computer supported cooperative work systems, i.e., systems that are designed to be applicable in various application areas requiring explicit collaboration support. In our opinion, guidelines for subsystem level design are rarely given most guidelines currently given apply to the programming language level. We extract guidelines from a case study of the redesign and extension of an advanced commercial workflow management system and place them into the context of existing software engineering research. The guidelines are then validated against the design decisions made in the construction of a widely used web-based groupware system. Our approach is based on the well-known distinction between essential (logical) and physical architectures. We show how essential architecture design can be based on a direct mapping of abstract functional concepts as found in general-purpose systems to modules in the essential architecture. The essential architecture is next mapped to a physical architecture by applying software clustering and replication to achieve the required distribution and performance characteristics
A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and
engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process
large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources.
Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex
workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of
workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a
taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and
executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid
workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the
comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design
and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid
workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure
An Innovative Workspace for The Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an initiative to build the next
generation, ground-based gamma-ray observatories. We present a prototype
workspace developed at INAF that aims at providing innovative solutions for the
CTA community. The workspace leverages open source technologies providing web
access to a set of tools widely used by the CTA community. Two different user
interaction models, connected to an authentication and authorization
infrastructure, have been implemented in this workspace. The first one is a
workflow management system accessed via a science gateway (based on the Liferay
platform) and the second one is an interactive virtual desktop environment. The
integrated workflow system allows to run applications used in astronomy and
physics researches into distributed computing infrastructures (ranging from
clusters to grids and clouds). The interactive desktop environment allows to
use many software packages without any installation on local desktops
exploiting their native graphical user interfaces. The science gateway and the
interactive desktop environment are connected to the authentication and
authorization infrastructure composed by a Shibboleth identity provider and a
Grouper authorization solution. The Grouper released attributes are consumed by
the science gateway to authorize the access to specific web resources and the
role management mechanism in Liferay provides the attribute-role mapping
DRIVER Technology Watch Report
This report is part of the Discovery Workpackage (WP4) and is the third report out of four deliverables. The objective of this report is to give an overview of the latest technical developments in the world of digital repositories, digital libraries and beyond, in order to serve as theoretical and practical input for the technical DRIVER developments, especially those focused on enhanced publications. This report consists of two main parts, one part focuses on interoperability standards for enhanced publications, the other part consists of three subchapters, which give a landscape picture of current and surfacing technologies and communities crucial to DRIVER. These three subchapters contain the GRID, CRIS and LTP communities and technologies. Every chapter contains a theoretical explanation, followed by case studies and the outcomes and opportunities for DRIVER in this field
Distributed interoperable workflow support for electronic commerce.
Abstract. This paper describes a flexible distributed transactional workflow environment based on an extensible object-oriented framework built around class libraries, application programming interfaces, and shared services. The purpose of this environment is to support a range of EC-like business activities including the support of financial transactions and electronic contracts. This environment has as its aim to provide key infrastructure services for mediating and monitoring electronic commerce.
