    From the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm to a Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz

    The next few years will be exciting as prototype universal quantum processors emerge, enabling implementation of a wider variety of algorithms. Of particular interest are quantum heuristics, which require experimentation on quantum hardware for their evaluation, and which have the potential to significantly expand the breadth of quantum computing applications. A leading candidate is Farhi et al.'s Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm, which alternates between applying a cost-function-based Hamiltonian and a mixing Hamiltonian. Here, we extend this framework to allow alternation between more general families of operators. The essence of this extension, the Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz, is the consideration of general parametrized families of unitaries rather than only those corresponding to the time-evolution under a fixed local Hamiltonian for a time specified by the parameter. This ansatz supports the representation of a larger, and potentially more useful, set of states than the original formulation, with potential long-term impact on a broad array of application areas. For cases that call for mixing only within a desired subspace, refocusing on unitaries rather than Hamiltonians enables more efficiently implementable mixers than was possible in the original framework. Such mixers are particularly useful for optimization problems with hard constraints that must always be satisfied, defining a feasible subspace, and soft constraints whose violation we wish to minimize. More efficient implementation enables earlier experimental exploration of an alternating operator approach to a wide variety of approximate optimization, exact optimization, and sampling problems. Here, we introduce the Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz, lay out design criteria for mixing operators, detail mappings for eight problems, and provide brief descriptions of mappings for diverse problems.Comment: 51 pages, 2 figures.     Online Makespan Minimization with Parallel Schedules

    In online makespan minimization a sequence of jobs σ=J1,...,Jn\sigma = J_1,..., J_n has to be scheduled on mm identical parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum completion time of any job. We investigate the problem with an essentially new model of resource augmentation. Here, an online algorithm is allowed to build several schedules in parallel while processing σ\sigma. At the end of the scheduling process the best schedule is selected. This model can be viewed as providing an online algorithm with extra space, which is invested to maintain multiple solutions. The setting is of particular interest in parallel processing environments where each processor can maintain a single or a small set of solutions. We develop a (4/3+\eps)-competitive algorithm, for any 0<\eps\leq 1, that uses a number of 1/\eps^{O(\log (1/\eps))} schedules. We also give a (1+\eps)-competitive algorithm, for any 0<\eps\leq 1, that builds a polynomial number of (m/\eps)^{O(\log (1/\eps) / \eps)} schedules. This value depends on mm but is independent of the input σ\sigma. The performance guarantees are nearly best possible. We show that any algorithm that achieves a competitiveness smaller than 4/3 must construct Ω(m)\Omega(m) schedules. Our algorithms make use of novel guessing schemes that (1) predict the optimum makespan of a job sequence σ\sigma to within a factor of 1+\eps and (2) guess the job processing times and their frequencies in σ\sigma. In (2) we have to sparsify the universe of all guesses so as to reduce the number of schedules to a constant. The competitive ratios achieved using parallel schedules are considerably smaller than those in the standard problem without resource augmentation

    Network Coding in a Multicast Switch

    We consider the problem of serving multicast flows in a crossbar switch. We show that linear network coding across packets of a flow can sustain traffic patterns that cannot be served if network coding were not allowed. Thus, network coding leads to a larger rate region in a multicast crossbar switch. We demonstrate a traffic pattern which requires a switch speedup if coding is not allowed, whereas, with coding the speedup requirement is eliminated completely. In addition to throughput benefits, coding simplifies the characterization of the rate region. We give a graph-theoretic characterization of the rate region with fanout splitting and intra-flow coding, in terms of the stable set polytope of the 'enhanced conflict graph' of the traffic pattern. Such a formulation is not known in the case of fanout splitting without coding. We show that computing the offline schedule (i.e. using prior knowledge of the flow arrival rates) can be reduced to certain graph coloring problems. Finally, we propose online algorithms (i.e. using only the current queue occupancy information) for multicast scheduling based on our graph-theoretic formulation. In particular, we show that a maximum weighted stable set algorithm stabilizes the queues for all rates within the rate region.Comment: 9 pages, submitted to IEEE INFOCOM 200

    Randomization can be as helpful as a glimpse of the future in online computation

    We provide simple but surprisingly useful direct product theorems for proving lower bounds on online algorithms with a limited amount of advice about the future. As a consequence, we are able to translate decades of research on randomized online algorithms to the advice complexity model. Doing so improves significantly on the previous best advice complexity lower bounds for many online problems, or provides the first known lower bounds. For example, if nn is the number of requests, we show that: (1) A paging algorithm needs Ω(n)\Omega(n) bits of advice to achieve a competitive ratio better than Hk=Ω(logk)H_k=\Omega(\log k), where kk is the cache size. Previously, it was only known that Ω(n)\Omega(n) bits of advice were necessary to achieve a constant competitive ratio smaller than 5/45/4. (2) Every O(n1ε)O(n^{1-\varepsilon})-competitive vertex coloring algorithm must use Ω(nlogn)\Omega(n\log n) bits of advice. Previously, it was only known that Ω(nlogn)\Omega(n\log n) bits of advice were necessary to be optimal. For certain online problems, including the MTS, kk-server, paging, list update, and dynamic binary search tree problem, our results imply that randomization and sublinear advice are equally powerful (if the underlying metric space or node set is finite). This means that several long-standing open questions regarding randomized online algorithms can be equivalently stated as questions regarding online algorithms with sublinear advice. For example, we show that there exists a deterministic O(logk)O(\log k)-competitive kk-server algorithm with advice complexity o(n)o(n) if and only if there exists a randomized O(logk)O(\log k)-competitive kk-server algorithm without advice. Technically, our main direct product theorem is obtained by extending an information theoretical lower bound technique due to Emek, Fraigniaud, Korman, and Ros\'en [ICALP'09]

    Optimal Online Edge Coloring of Planar Graphs with Advice

    Using the framework of advice complexity, we study the amount of knowledge about the future that an online algorithm needs to color the edges of a graph optimally, i.e., using as few colors as possible. For graphs of maximum degree Δ\Delta, it follows from Vizing's Theorem that O(mlogΔ)O(m\log \Delta) bits of advice suffice to achieve optimality, where mm is the number of edges. We show that for graphs of bounded degeneracy (a class of graphs including e.g. trees and planar graphs), only O(m)O(m) bits of advice are needed to compute an optimal solution online, independently of how large Δ\Delta is. On the other hand, we show that Ω(m)\Omega (m) bits of advice are necessary just to achieve a competitive ratio better than that of the best deterministic online algorithm without advice. Furthermore, we consider algorithms which use a fixed number of advice bits per edge (our algorithm for graphs of bounded degeneracy belongs to this class of algorithms). We show that for bipartite graphs, any such algorithm must use at least Ω(mlogΔ)\Omega(m\log \Delta) bits of advice to achieve optimality.Comment: CIAC 201

    An Improved Bound for First-Fit on Posets Without Two Long Incomparable Chains

    It is known that the First-Fit algorithm for partitioning a poset P into chains uses relatively few chains when P does not have two incomparable chains each of size k. In particular, if P has width w then Bosek, Krawczyk, and Szczypka (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 23(4):1992--1999, 2010) proved an upper bound of ckw^{2} on the number of chains used by First-Fit for some constant c, while Joret and Milans (Order, 28(3):455--464, 2011) gave one of ck^{2}w.     First-Fit is Linear on Posets Excluding Two Long Incomparable Chains

    A poset is (r + s)-free if it does not contain two incomparable chains of size r and s, respectively. We prove that when r and s are at least 2, the First-Fit algorithm partitions every (r + s)-free poset P into at most 8(r-1)(s-1)w chains, where w is the width of P.
