Aid Effectiveness in Bangladesh

This paper provides a critical review of aid effectiveness in Bangladesh . It focuses on the contributions of three major, high-profile donors: the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Government of Japan (GOJ). In assessing aid effectiveness, the paper uses a qualitative triangulation approach based on the subjective judgments of donors and recipients. This approach is dictated by the deficiencies of quantitative methods for this purpose and the lack of adequate and reliable quantitative data. The paper then discusses the causes of aid ineffectiveness. As this theme has a wider resonance beyond Bangladesh, the discussion next turns to the experiences of the developing world as a whole. Foundations have long created programs to provide grants to individuals—most often in the form of fellowships, scholarships, and prizes. Several of these programs have become so prominent that they are now institutions in and of themselves. Consider just a few examples: the Pulitzer Prize, Fulbright Program, and MacArthur "genius" awards. Governments, as well as foundations large and small, fund individual support programs.The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has generously allowed the authors of this report to examine its portfolio of individual support programs to explore what the authors believe are some of the strategic fundamentals underlying this type of programming that could be applied to future individual support grantmaking. The purpose of this study is to inform those interested in individual support programs about not only some of the strategy considerations underlying this type of grantmaking but what these programs can be expected to achieve—and under what circumstances.

Revenue Diversification to Improve and Maintain Service Offerings of Nonprofit Organizations

Leaders of nonprofits businesses adopt revenue diversification strategies to create innovative program services, creative ways to source materials, utilize volunteers and community partnerships, and identify business solutions related to solving societal problems. To continue providing services, it is crucial for nonprofit leaders to maintain adequate financial resources. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore revenue diversification strategies used by 3 leaders of a nonprofit organization in western California of the United States using Markowitz\u27s modern portfolio theory as the conceptual lens. Data were collected through in-depth semistructured interviews and examination of organizational documents, internal archival data, and online databases. Through thematic analysis, 8 revenue diversification themes emerged: adding income streams; establishing practical financial performance measures; establishing operating reserve; achieving financial health, sustainability, and resilience; building organizational capacity; adopting transparency; achieving efficiency and effectiveness; and conducting active surveys. Additionally, 10 recommendations were identified: developing written procedurals, developing a process improvement strategy, engaging in contingency planning, increasing transparency and governance, using metrics for donor attrition and retention, developing and upgrading technology, increasing staff capacity, creating an employee handbook, conducting active surveys to reinforce additional services, establishing performance measures. These findings may have implications for positive social change, including the potential to contribute to nonprofit leaders\u27 models of effective strategies with processes to grow income sources to support organizational sustainability and support a leader\u27s ability to improve and maintain service offerings, while avoiding dependence on single source of revenue

Self-sufficiency and the DIY Artist: managing creative activities within local music scenes by adopting new technologies

The overall aim of this book is to aid the DIY artist to move towards self-sufficiency through the use of new technologies, which is achieved by defining DIY music culture, identifying the creative and business needs of the DIY artist as well as establishing a model for DIY artists to be self-sufficient. The methodology consists of a mixture of unstructured interviews, including email, telephone and face-to-face. Fifteen DIY artists were interviewed from local music scenes around the UK, in particular Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester and London. The book identifies areas of weakness within the processes of a DIY artist¿s creative project relating to the artistic and/or managerial process, which can be improved through the use of new technologies.
