Developing a Data Narrative: Analyzing Trends in an Academic Interlibrary Loan Department

    Get PDF
Between 2010 and 2015 interlibrary loan request rates at Albertsons Library at Boise State University were observed to be in decline. This study details the efforts to explore this trend and determine a cause using existing data available through the OCLC Atlas ILLiad Web Reports interface. A simple, but effective method to analyze these substantial reports is presented and practical examples of analysis conducted at Albertsons Library are discussed. By looking at factors such as usage patterns, new user registrations, and cancelation language, the decrease in borrowing and lending requests was confirmed and attributed primarily to decreases in graduate student ILLiad registrations and a lending ebook deflection implemented in 2015. Additional, focused qualitative assessment and updates to user interfaces were recommended as a result of the study

Collaborative Approaches to the Management of Geospatial Data Collections in Canadian Academic Libraries: A Historical Case Study

    Get PDF
Special Issue: Geospatial Data Management, Curation, and Preservation - Part 2 The Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) is a consortium of the twenty-one university libraries in Ontario, Canada. Since 1967, OCUL member institutions have worked together to share costs and workload through collective purchasing and licensing of information resources and more recently through the establishment of a shared digital infrastructure known as Scholars Portal. Under the auspices of OCUL, Ontario\u27s university map librarians formed the OCUL Map Group in 1973 to seek opportunities to communicate and collaborate to improve the collections and services they offer their users. The opportunities provided by collaboration have ensured a greater capacity to manage evolving collections of geospatial data. The group has served as a community of practice, which has provided educational opportunities and facilitated collaborative problem solving through a listserv, conference calls, and face-to-face meetings. This collegial environment has also led to the completion of a number of projects, which have resulted in the creation of new technical infrastructures and strategies for sharing the workload of data management tasks. This paper discusses the role of collaboration in OCUL projects and offers some suggestions for others considering embarking on collaborations of their own

Usability Study of Request Functionality in Website User Interfaces at Duke University Libraries

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of a usability study on request functionality conducted using web page interface mock-ups of Duke University Libraries' website. The study focused on account logins as well as single- and multiple-item requests. In addition, participants had to select delivery locations and assess the clarity of confirmation status for the requests. Results of this study identify areas where these interfaces can be improved, particularly around account login for users who have Library Card accounts and for requesting multiple items at one time.Master of Science in Information Scienc
