    Ontology: Towards a new synthesis

    Get PDF
This introduction to the second international conference on Formal Ontology and Information Systems presents a brief history of ontology as a discipline spanning the boundaries of philosophy and information science. We sketch some of the reasons for the growth of ontology in the information science field, and offer a preliminary stocktaking of how the term ‘ontology’ is currently used. We conclude by suggesting some grounds for optimism as concerns the future collaboration between philosophical ontologists and information scientists

Excerpt: This very useful reference volume is a companion to UNESCO\u27s World Guide to Science Information and Documentation Services (1965). It lists and describes the principal centers in each country which provide technical information, either to all investigators or to a restricted clientele. 273 institutions in 73 countries have been included, with an informative yet concise report upon each source. A sampIe entry lists name of repository in the vernacular, English, French and acronym; addresses; brief history; staff; subject coverage; nature of library; nature of abstracting service; whether bibliographies, literature searches or translations are available; information about photoreproduction services; and methods of payment for services. The remarkable proliferation of information sources in science and technology makes such guides not only convenient but necessary

    Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity

Constraint satisfaction problems are a central pillar of modern computational complexity theory. This survey provides an introduction to the rapidly growing field of Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity, which includes the study of quantum constraint satisfaction problems. Over the past decade and a half, this field has witnessed fundamental breakthroughs, ranging from the establishment of a "Quantum Cook-Levin Theorem" to deep insights into the structure of 1D low-temperature quantum systems via so-called area laws. Our aim here is to provide a computer science-oriented introduction to the subject in order to help bridge the language barrier between computer scientists and physicists in the field. As such, we include the following in this survey: (1) The motivations and history of the field, (2) a glossary of condensed matter physics terms explained in computer-science friendly language, (3) overviews of central ideas from condensed matter physics, such as indistinguishable particles, mean field theory, tensor networks, and area laws, and (4) brief expositions of selected computer science-based results in the area. For example, as part of the latter, we provide a novel information theoretic presentation of Bravyi's polynomial time algorithm for Quantum 2-SAT.Comment: v4: published version, 127 pages, introduction expanded to include brief introduction to quantum information, brief list of some recent developments added, minor changes throughou

Establishing National Innovation Foundation: How Does a Tail Wag the Dog?

A simple search on the web about unaided technological innovations by common people from the unorganized sector will reveal the paucity of information worldwide. It is this gap, which Honey Bee Network started at IIMA about two decades ago tried to fill. In this paper, a very brief history of the steps taken to establish National Innovation Foundation (NIF) has been given. A detailed history remains to be written. Now that NIF will become an autonomous Institute of Department of Science and Technology, its role within India and outside needs to be redefined. How a small academic initiative has spawned multiple institutional innovations is a subject that deserves further study.

In this issue of Music Therapy Today, I have chosen to write about the history and contributions the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) has made to grow the global awareness of music therapy as an art and science. This paper will provide readers with a brief history of the WFMT by highlighting its purpose, organization and important events from the past 30 years. Further information on projects undertaken by WFMT officers from 2011 forward will also be highlighted

Presents an experience report about the process of elaboration, execution and evaluation in the Scientific Initiation Project named “Information Literacy and informational practice: a study of sustainable development and exercise of citizenship", developed in the Library Science and Information Centre Management Course (CBG) of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in the years 2018 and 2019. Deals about an undergraduate scientific initiation project of educational, social, cultural and technological character, which aimed to develop research about study and actions of Information Literacy in information practices focused on sustainable development and exercise of citizenship. Presents initially a brief history of Library Science and librarians, as information professionals; history of UFRJ as an institution concerned with teaching, research and extension; and the creation of CBG at UFRJ. Points out the relevance of the project as learning beyond the classroom and the collective and collaborative development between students and teachers involved in its elaboration

    Sabalo spawning

This paper is a brief presentation on the status of natural and artificial reproduction of bangos and a recommendation on general approaches researchers may take in solving fry needs while working toward bangos domestication. As with all other aspects of bangos biology and life history, science has surprisingly very little knowledge about spawning and reproduction. Essentially, no new information has been generated since Schuster's (1960) synopsis

History and Fiction: An Uneasy Marriage?

This essay discusses the relationship between history as a science and fiction as a genre of literature. It starts with a brief digression on the characteristics and pitfalls of the historical novel, including its development over time. Past experience is highlighted with the aid of a selection of acknowledged novelists making intensive use of historical information. Recent new trends are illustrated by professional historians becoming novelists. A final section offers reflections on how to combine the demands of authenticity in history with the demands of drama in literary fiction
